Ernest Rutherford was a New Zealand-born physicist and chemist known as the "father of nuclear physics." He studied at Canterbury University in New Zealand before moving to Cambridge University in 1895. There, he developed a device to detect electromagnetic waves and succeeded in detecting them over several hundred meters. In 1898, he became a professor at McGill University in Canada. Rutherford made seminal discoveries about the structure of the atom, including identifying the proton and proving that atoms have a small, dense nucleus. He coined the term "artificial disintegration" and won the 1908 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
2. Ernest Rutherford,s parents were James and Martha. Ernest was fourth of
twelve children. In 1876 the Rutherford family moved to Fox hill. Rutherford went
to canterbury college and then to Canterbury university from
1890-1894.Graduating with a bachelor of arts in 1892, and then with master of
arts in mathematics, mathematical physics and physical science the following
year. ( At university he was known for a keen rugby player) After graduating,
he taught for a few weeks at Christchurch boys but was not a successful
teacher.Ernest Rutherford left New Zealand in 1895 to study at the Cavendish
laboratory in Cambridge, as a research student. He adapted a device he had
developed back in New Zealand, using it to detect electro-magnetic waves, and
in 1896 succeeded in detecting waves over several hundred meters. In 1898
Rutherford took up the post of Professor of Physics at McGill University in
Montreal, but returned to New Zealand briefly in 1900 to marry Mary Newton,
the daughter of his Christchurch landlady. Their only child, Eileen, was born in
1901.
