CORCORAN COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN PRESENTS
THE GRAY AREA: LIVING IN TRANSITION
July 2-July 20, 2014
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, July 2, Gallery 31 at the Corcoran College of Art and
Design will open The Gray Area: Living in Transition, a collective exhibition that serves as a visual study
of the boundaries between military life and civilian life.
The Gray Area features a variety of mediums including photography, film, painting, and
animation produced by members of the newly-formed Corcoran College of Art and Design Veterans
Committee, comprised of Corcoran students and alumni who are veterans or current members of the
reserve.
After experiencing a regimented life of restrictions and expectations while in service, soldiers
find that the edges between war and home can blur, as what was once black and white begins to fade into
gray. One veteran and artist in the exhibition, Heather Muniz, describes this gray area as “the area that I
have found myself in repeatedly since I’ve left the military. This is the place where I’ve left the structure
of the military and entered the world of freedom. My work in this show is a manifestation of the
emotional places I have been – the confusion, sadness, and anger of the experience.”
Admission to The Gray Area: Living in Transition is free and open to the public during all regular
museum hours. An artists’ talk will take place on opening night, Wednesday, July 2, at 6 p.m., with a
reception to follow. The talk and reception are free and open to the public.
VISITOR INFORMATION
Admission to The Gray Area: Living in Transition is free. The Corcoran’s hours of operation are as
follows: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 9
p.m.; closed Monday and Tuesday. Admission is $10 for adults, and $8 for seniors (62+) and students
(with valid ID). Admission to Gallery 31, the Corcoran College of Art and Design exhibition space, is
free. Admission to the Corcoran is free for visitors 18 and under, active duty military (with ID), and
Corcoran Members.
ABOUT THE CORCORAN
Established in 1869, the Corcoran Gallery of Art was one of America’s first museums of art—
dedicated, in the words of founder William Wilson Corcoran, to “encouraging American genius.” Today
it is Washington, D.C.’s largest nonfederal art museum, known internationally for its distinguished
collection of historical and modern American art as well as contemporary art, photography, European
painting, sculpture, and the decorative arts. A dynamic schedule of special exhibitions complements a
range of educational programming, which together enriches the perspectives of the visiting public,
support the local arts community, and encourage thoughtful interpretation of today’s most compelling
social issues. The Corcoran College of Art and Design was founded as a school of art in 1890 and
stands as Washington’s only four-year accredited college of art and design. The College is one of the few
in the nation whose educational model includes an integral relationship with a museum, fostering the
talent of the next generation of artists. For more information about the Corcoran Gallery of Art and
College of Art and Design, visit www.corcoran.org.

CORCORAN PRESENTS “THE ULTIMATE URBAN SAFARI”
FREE family-friendly event inspired by American Metal: The Art of Albert Paley
WHAT: With the heat, humidity, and influx of
tourists and visiting interns, navigating D.C.'s
concrete jungle during the summer months can
be a daunting task. On Saturday, July 19, let the
Corcoran serve as your tour guide and join us for
the Ultimate Urban Safari! Perfect for families
and kids of all ages, this wild summer day will be
dedicated to the animal kingdom. Discover and
be inspired by creatures big and small through
workshop activities and book readings.
Participants will also have the chance to get involved and make a lasting difference by volunteering in an
animal welfare community service project that day. All ages welcome!
The Ultimate Urban Safari is inspired by the Corcoran’s summer exhibition, American Metal: The Art of
Albert Paley. American Metal, on view June 28-September 28, is a retrospective survey of Albert Paley,
one of the world’s most distinguished metalsmiths. Over his innovative 50-year career, Paley has often
taken inspiration from animals and nature, perhaps most notably for his 2006 portal gates for the St. Louis
Zoo, Animals Always.
July 19 is also opening day for Mark Tribe: Plein Air, an exhibition that explores the aesthetic of
landscape photography through the virtual lens of computer simulation. The images alter our perceptions,
presenting landscapes from a “drone’s eye view,” a machinic perspective that is playing an increasingly
important role in contemporary culture. Don’t miss your opportunity to view the exhibition for FREE on
opening day!
WHEN: Saturday, July 19; 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
WHERE: Corcoran Gallery of Art
500 Seventeenth Street NW
Washington, D.C. 20006
ADMISSION: This event is free as part of the Corcoran’s Free Summer Saturdays promotion. No
registration is required. More information about The Ultimate Urban Safari is available at
www.corcoran.org/pride. To see a list of activities taking place during Free Summer Saturdays, visit
http://www.corcoran.org/freesummersaturdays.
