Hallucinogens alter perception and awareness, causing sensations and images that seem real but are not. PCP was originally developed as an anesthetic but is no longer used due to serious side effects. PCP can be snorted, taken orally, injected, or smoked and causes feelings of detachment, numbness, and loss of coordination along with hallucinations and mood disorders. PCP overdose can result in low blood pressure, seizures, coma and even death. Long term PCP use is associated with memory loss, depression and damage to the central nervous system. Surveys show that a small percentage of high school students report using PCP.
