2. Course Description
This course introduces the students to current issues, theories and research in health
promotion and disease prevention related to individuals, families, aggregates and
communities. The content is presented in three parts:
Part I: Current issues and research evidence in health promotion and disease
prevention in the Malaysian and global scenario; challenges confronting nurses working
with families, children and adolescents, adults and older adults, and the physically
compromised;
Part II: Focuses on theoretical foundation of health behavior and health promotion –
the theory and principles of how health behavior patterns of individuals, families and
communities are acquired, maintained and changed. The influence of social,
psychological factors such as ethnicity, socio economic status, gender and social support
is included. Selected research evidence and models of health promotion are analysed.
Part III: The role of the Advanced Practice Nurse in risk assessment, counseling,
education and screening. During the clinical practicum, each student will have the
opportunity to apply course content and develop and implement an individual or
community-based educational project designed to promote health and prevent disease.

At the end of the course on “Health Promotion and Disease Prevention”, students will be
able to:
1. analyse the concepts and theories of health, health promotion and disease
prevention;
2. explain the theoretical foundation of health behavior and health promotion with
particular reference to social and psychological factors;
3. evaluate current local and global issues and research evidence on health
promotion and disease prevention, related to individuals, families and
communities;
4. analyse the varied roles and challenges confronting of the Advanced Community
Health Nurse in health promotion and disease prevention.
