Introduction
•Microsoft HoloLens is a smart glass which is the first cordless, self-contained holographic computer
running on Windows 10.
•Windows 10 is first platform to support Holographic Computing with APIs.
What are Holograms?
 Holograms are made entirely of light.
 Holographic objects can be viewed from different angles and
distances, just like physical objects, but they do not offer any
physical resistance when touched or pushed because they don’t
have any mass.
 HoloLens came by combining the two words “Hologram” and
“lens”.
What is Microsoft HoloLens ?
 Microsoft HoloLens is an augmented reality computing platform, features see-through, holographic,
high-definition lenses and spatial sound so that user can see and hear holograms in the world around
you.
 Microsoft HoloLens is the first holographic computer running Windows 10.
 Microsoft HoloLens allows user to pin holograms in his physical environment and provides a new way
to see his world
 It is completely untethered–no wires, phones, or connection to a PC is needed.
 Microsoft HoloLens equipped with advanced sensors and a new Holographic Processing Unit (HPU)
that understands the world around the user, and is able to run without any wires while processing
terabytes of data from the sensors in real-time.
Features
What is Virtual and Augmented Reality ?
What is Virtual Reality?
 Virtual reality (VR) is an artificial, computer-
generated simulation or recreation of a real life
environment or situation.
 It immerses the user by making them feel like
they are experiencing the simulated reality
firsthand, primarily by stimulating their vision and
hearing.
What is Augmented Reality?
 Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that
layers computer-generated enhancements
atop an existing reality in order to make it
more meaningful through the ability to
interact with it.
Parts of HoloLens
 It have a major six parts those are bone of this
product
1.Camera
2.Computer
3.Lenses
4.Vent
5.Sensor
6.Buttons
1. Camera:
 The project HoloLens depth camera has a field of vision that spans 120 by 120 degree, so it can sense
what your hands are doing even when they are nearly outstretched.
2. Computer:
 HoloLens is not just a visor connected to a computer, it is a computer on its own.
 HoloLens contain CPU, battery, GPU and first of its kind HPU (holographic processing unit).
 18 sensors flood the brain of the device with terabyte of data every seconds.
3. Lenses :
 Microsoft HoloLens has two display. They are transparent so that wearer can see the real world
behind virtual object.
 To create project HoloLens image, light particles bounce around millions of times in the so called
light engine of the device . Then the photons enter the two lenses(one for each eye), where they
ricochet between layers of glasses before finally hitting of wearer eye.
4.Vent:
 The device is more powerful than a laptop but won’t overheat- warm air flows to the sides, where it
vents up and out.
5.Sensor:
 Sensor tracks where the wearer is looking and adjusts the display .Motion sensor detect wearers
movement.
 The sensor can also see wearers hands, the hands are an Input system User can interact with
whatever he sees by just touching it.
 Wearer also give gesture as input sensor enables the tracking of user movement.
6.Buttons:
 On the right side buttons allow user to adjust the volume and to control the contrast of the
hologram.
Working of Microsoft HoloLens?
 Microsoft HoloLens has User Interface so it takes voice , gaze and gestures as input command.
 Than internal computer works on input command.
 Now projection of hologram, for projection HoloLens use the HUE(head up display) method two
Nano projector located at each side of head and semi transparent visor which reflect the image as light
on users eye.
 To create project HoloLens image, light particles bounce around millions of times in the so called light
engine of the device.
User Interface
Gaze
 Built-in sensors lets you use your gaze to move the
cursor so you can select holograms
Gestures
Use simple gestures to open apps select and resize or move
holograms
Voice
Use voice commands to navigate, select, open and control apps.
HoloLens Structure
See Through Lenses
Spatial Sound, Advanced Sensors
Holographic Processing Unit
Applications
Enterprise
 HoloLens can be applied in corporate training, such that it is more comprehensive since it is not limited to
the screen.
 Example: Detailed instruction given through the device, easy direction and inventory tracking.
 Untethered communication and real time conferences
Designers and Researchers
 Allows users to create a virtual prototype enhancing
efficiency of designing and research
 Example: Visualizing new product instantly
 Cooperative Design/Research regardless of distance.
Gamers and Entertainment
 More immersive experience in gaming
Advantage of Microsoft HoloLens
 Easy to wear and use.
 Sensitive and responsive to the presence of people.
 HoloLens can be used in army battlefield , where detailed instruction can be given to the
untrained person in the midst of combat.
 A useful technology for a Designing & Futuristic Innovations.
 A spectacle based computer to reside directly on your eyes rather than your pocket.
Disadvantage of Microsoft HoloLens
 Can be easily damaged or broken.
 User will have a tough time taking care of it.
 It may lead to accident while driving.
 Privacy of people may break due to new glasses.
Conclusion
 Holographic computing experiences with Microsoft HoloLens are different from existing
experiences, such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).
 The premier device for Windows Holographic, Microsoft HoloLens is a smart-glasses headset that
is cordless, self-contained Windows 10 computer.
 HoloLens is a thing where you can connect, create and explore like never before ,Create what you
imagine, visualize your work, collaborate and explore.
“HoloLens- a step into the
future, a future beyond
imagination”
