The British Computer Society published recently an interesting analysis of the power loss chain within the datacenter. The biggest losses (65%) are incurred before the electricity reaches the datacenter. Cooling and power infrastructure account for almost 60% of the energy dissipated at the datacenter. A lot of gain can be obtained by increased utilization factor of the servers and also improving the design of datacenters and the IT equipment.
