poor UX and the success stories of good UX.
Anthropologie, the clothing retail giant, increased
its sales by 24% with a UX redesign that made its
checkout process easier and Bank of America
recorded an increase of 45% after rethinking their
registration process. Statistics like these can
prompt any enterprise to want to do whatever it
takes to nail the UX experience.

A UX designer is essentially a problem solver. Every
good UX designer follows a series of steps to design
a user experience that will be unique to your target
market.
Any intelligent fool can make things more complex
but it takes a great UX designer to move in the
opposite direction. He should be able to humanize

GFK, a consulting firm conducted a user research to
figure out their experiences with mobile sites. It
was found that the reason behind poor sales on a
client’s mobile site was a poorly designed “Buy”
button. It went unnoticed by users and the ones
who somehow managed to see it had a hard time
clicking it. It was also found that just by adding an
additional “buy” button below each product image
resulted in an additional $500 million in revenue
per year.

UNDERSTAND YOUR USERS
Having a thorough understanding of your users and their needs is
absolutely important in designing a mobile app with a fantastic UX.
There are different kinds of shopper personas – the ‘power shopper’ –
he is comfortable with technology and knows exactly what he wants.
This is the kind of user you will lose if your search feature is not
strategically located on your app. Then, there is the ‘recreational
shopper.’ This is your typical window shopper. He will hang around and
check out what your app has to offer and will end up making impulsive
buys if you can tempt him with great offers and promotional discounts
at right places.

IMPROVE THE USABILITY
A retail app that is easy to use can greatly increase sales. It is
important to anticipate the implicit need of your users and accordingly
design your app. Using contrasting colors for the search bar and the
click button can make it hard to miss. A search filter with advanced
options can be important for a power shopper.
If you want to engage your returning customer, a good idea is to have
a ‘New Arrivals’ section on your home screen. Since he is a repeat
customer, chances are he is familiar with most of the products listed
on your app. It is the new launches that he is more than likely to be
interested in.

PLAN THE LAYOUT
For a retail app to fully engage a shopper, it has to have an intuitive
design, where navigation is simple and logical. The order of your
products and screens should feel natural to an average user. Having
large high quality images of your product is helpful in letting the user
to decide which item to buy. The intent should be able to replicate the
real in-store experience of a user, where he can evaluate a product
thoroughly before making a purchase.

SIMPLIFY CHECKOUT
PROCESS
Having a cumbersome checkout process can be a deal breaker. The
shopping cart itself should be designed in a way that is helpful to the
users. If you simply have a ‘remove’ icon and not a ‘save for later’
button, you will have lost a potential sale. The shipping cost should be
mentioned before payment page.
Extreme care should be taken to make the payment process a smooth
one. Another thing that can hurt your sales is making the registration
process mandatory. Users tend to think of this as a waste of time.
Instead, if you offer them a feature where they can check out as a
guest, it can be a pleasurable experience not only for a new user but
also to the returning customer
