APP Reading – Level 3
Assessment
Focus (AF)
Criteria
2
- make sure you to pick points from the text.
- pick some quotes from the text.

- show what the text means to you.
- write comments about different parts of the
text.
- write what the character is thinking.

- talk about the features of the writing
(paragraphs, phrases, etc)

- find examples of the writer’s use of
adjectives, nouns, verbs, etc.

- write what you think, and link it to what the
writer has written.

- find links between texts (E.G similar
characters, similar settings).
- begin to identify features that explain where
or when a text is set.

you think.

points from the text, and talk about them all.
- make sure you back up all your ideas with
quotes or evidence from the text.

- explain all of your points in detail, and talk
about different parts of the text.
- back up ideas with suitable quotes from the
text, and discuss what you think the writer is
talking about.

- talk about the structure/layout of a piece of
writing, commenting on why the writer has
used that feature.
- explain all the reasons why a writer may have
organised their work in a certain way.

- find examples of the writer’s use of
adjectives, nouns, verbs, etc and talk about
them.
- make comments about a writer’s choice of
vocabulary, and their reasons for choosing
certain words or phrases.

- make clear comments on the writer’s main
purpose, and give an general overview of a
piece of writing.
- write clearly what you think the writer’s
viewpoint is, and back up your ideas with
quotes.
- comment on what you think of the text, and
your point of view about its contents.

context helps identify it’s meaning.

Assessment

- identify all the relevant points in the text, making
sure you include summaries from different places or
parts.
- ensure your point is backed up by the most suitable
quote from the text and an explanation.

- support all your points with quotes/evidence,
including discussing the different layers of meaning.
- begin to talk about the context of a piece of text,
and how details add to the overall meaning.

- discuss how the structure if a text is used to
support the writers’ theme or purpose.
- discuss how different features are used to direct
the overall organisation of a piece of text.

- discuss how the writer uses language, using the
correct terminology.
- ensure all of your comments about the writers’
choice of language/vocabulary link to an explanation
of the overall effect of the writing on the reader.

- explain fully how you decided on the purpose of a
piece of text, and back up your reasoning clearly.
- discuss, in detail, the viewpoints contained within
the text, and use quotes to support the development
of your opinions.
- discuss how the writer has written purposely to
effect, or influence, the reader.

a text.
- make clear comments on how writers from different
periods use different language and features.

- try to use your knowledge of other information to
back up/further support your ideas.

- weigh up the evidence in a piece of text to decide on
the views of the author, and comment on whether or
not you agree with those views.

- discuss how the structure of the writing supports
the ideas/viewpoints of the author.
- compare/evaluate the features used by an author to
create effects.

- analyse carefully how language is used in a piece of
writing.
- demonstrate your understanding of how the writers’
language contributes to the effect on the reader.

- evaluate/comment analytically on the writers
purpose.
- evaluate/comment analytically on how viewpoint is
established and maintained/changed within a piece
of writing.
- discuss how the techniques and devices used help
the writer to achieve the effect they want.

- analyse how a text is influenced by events of the
past (historical contexts)
- analyse how meanings within a text change,
depending on the social and historical context of the
period it was written in.
