Hey You! Wake Up!
What’s Up With Your Career?
Ever find yourself saying
                any of these?
You: I’m indispensable at work!
Truth: Nope. Your company will keep you until it is no longer in their interest to do so.
Ask some of the people you know who have been laid off.

Now what?            ALWAYS be prepared to stay, and prepared to go! You should commit to
operating with integrity, but always be thinking about what you want in your career, and
ask yourself if you are getting it where you are.
You:    My organization/ manager is committed to my career success!


Truth: While that may be true, no organization or person does or should care about it as
much as you do (or should!)

Now what?           Look around. What other roles exist that you find interesting? What else
could you do where you are? How about outside your organization? Do you have career
goals that are bigger than where you are now? If you don’t, that may be okay for now. At
least always have some thoughts about your “what’s next”.
You: If I work really, really hard, I will get that promotion/ new role!
Truth:     Also possible, but don’t limit your plan to keeping your head down and working
hard. Sure, working hard and producing great results matters, but it is also the relationships
we build as well as making sure that people know about our good work.

Now what?          Do the right people know what your goals are? Have you actually told
them? ( see the previous slide!) Get comfortable with telling people what you are doing
and with sharing your successes. Take –and give- credit where credit is due!
You: I am awesome! No one here is as good as I am! Who hired all of these ding-dongs
anyway?

Truth: We all have blind spots, and weaknesses that we may be aware of, but choose to
ignore. Being good at what you do is simply one part of being a solid performer. How do
you get your work done? What are your relationships with your co-workers and your clients
like? Are you a fit in your organization’s culture? Yep. All that matters.

Now what?             Take all feedback, informal or formal, seriously! Yes, you can decide
what feedback to accept and to act on, but you must always be aware of “fit”. No one can
be successful in all types of environments. What cues are you getting from your work
environment?
And remember…
     You Are Driving Your Career When…
 You are at least one step ahead of yourself and you have a
  plan that you are consistently implementing and goals you
  are pursuing.


You are not afraid of the question “what would you do if this all
went away tomorrow?”
