The opinion essay is a formal piece of
writing which presents the authorâs
point of view on a particular subject,
supported by reasons and examples.
The opposing viewpoint is also
presented, together with arguments
that show that it is unconvincing
(refutation).

Opinion essays
ïź They present the writerâs personal opinion
concerning the topic, clearly stated and
supported by reasons and/or examples.
ïź The opposing viewpoint and reason should
be included in a separate paragraph before
the conclusion, together with the argument
that shows it is an unconvincing viewpoint.
ïź The writerâs opinion should be included in
the introduction and summarised/restated
in the conclusion.

A good opinion essay should consist of:
ïź An introductory paragraph, in which you
clearly state the topic to be discussed and
your opinion about it;
ïź A main body, in which the arguments that
support your view are clearly stated in
separate paragraphs and exemplified or
justified; it should also include another
paragraph in which the opposing argumetn
is presented and refuted; and
ïź A concluding paragraph, summarising the
main points of the essay, and in which you
restate your opinion.

Points to consider:
ïź Present each point in a separate paragraph
(containing a topic sentence and clear
justification).
ïź Well-known quotations, rhetorical questions or
thought provoking statements are useful devices to
make your composition more interesting.
ïź Before you begin writing, you should always make
a list of the points you will present.
ïź Do not use informal style or very strong language.
ïź Use appropriate linking words/phrases to show the
links between paragraphs, as well as to link
sentences within paragraphs.

The Discussion Clock
ïź When considering a topic, you may refer to the
discussion clock, which will help you think of ideas
when planning your essay.
ïź Referring to the discussion clock is a useful
âbrainstormingâ technique, as it helps you examine
a topic from various viewpoints and decide on
ideas/points to include in your essay.
ïź Keep in mind that a topic may not relate to all the
aspects presented in the discussion clock.
ïź Remember that for each viewpoint you have
thought of, there is usually an opposing argument.
Think of the opposing arguments when planning
your essay.
