Over the years, I’ve built several teams to support several different missions. Though I still have a lot to learn, I’ve found that appropriate structuring of resources goes a long way towards successful outcomes. One of the tools that I use to structure human and technological resources is what I call the “Application Support Pyramid.” It’s basically a tool that starts quite general but gets quite specific from bottom to top. By consolidating resources that an entire organization uses, and then by embedding analysts that are specific to program/business areas, teams can become more productive because there are less silos and more resource-sharing opportunities. I presented this material to a government agency that is not well structured and I think it’ll help any agency better mesh its resources.
