Building a simple ArcMAP model and saving in toolbox
1. Module 3012
assignment 3
Video clips on building a simple
model in ArcMAP and saving it in a
toolbox
2. This presentation contains four
YouTube video clips
• Clip 1: Selecting and creating a new layer from a
set of existing layers, without using a model
• Clip 2: Creating a new empty model, saving it into
a new toolbox and adding that toolbox to your
display
• Clip 3: Adding a selection tool to the model and
selecting some features
• Clip 4: Adding a second tool to the model to
create a new layer, and exporting the model as an
image to insert in a Word file
3. Clip 1: follows this slide
• It is assumed you have worked through the
first three sets of video clips.
• This video shows how to select and create a
new layer from a set of existing layers, without
using a model. This is just to show what we
are going to try to get the model to do
• Clip 2 follows clip 1 and you can go straight to
it by clicking the advance button below
without watching clip 1
4. Clip 2: follows this slide
• In this video you will see how to open a new
model window, save it in a new toolbox stored
in your Z: drive and add that toolbox to your
display. This is complicated, but you only have
to do it once and then all models you create
can be stored in this toolbox.
5. Clip 3: follows this slide
• In this video clip you will see how to drag a
tool from a toolbox and drop it into a model
window. You then add two data layers to the
tool, run the model and it highlights the
features you are interested in. The power of
the model is that it retains a complete record
of what you have done and it can be used over
and over again.
6. Clip 4: follows this slide
• In this final clip in this section, you will add a
second tool to your model. This takes the
highlighted features and creates a new layer
form them. You can add any number of tools
to a model, and it keeps a record of what you
have done.
