7.  Why did the Great Awakening Occur?
 The Great Awakening arose when colonies were
questioning the role of the individual in religion and
society.
 Similar to the Enlightenment during this time people
grew to rely more on a personal approach to salvation
than church doctrine

 The First Great Awakening- Was a period of great
revivalism during the 1730s & 1740s. It de-emphasized
the importance of the church and put a greater
importance on the individual
