3. Catharina de Monte Sinay A nun of Deserto Convent of Bahia She became a nun at 16 She had slaves to prepare sweets She made a lot of money but donated it to the church
4. Francisca She was born sometime between 1700-1705 She became a slave of Anna de Forte She tried to become free by asking the Portugal government to set her free She lost the case and remained a slave for the rest of her life
5. Portuguese Empire Origins The Portuguese Empire has roots in the Iberian nation. Became its own nation 1139, but its sovereignty was challenged well into the early 1400s. The Portuguese beloved in the crusades against Islam and began to move into Northern Africa, this move wasn’t just religious it also gave the country the chance to begin to expand its borders
6. Portuguese Empire Brazil After conquering Brazil, John III of Portugal believed that it was important for the nation secure its land. The nation began giving out land grants to help colonize the area. Any person who received a grant was allowed almost free rain. They were allowed to create settlements, set up allotments and control the law. There were approximately twelve grants given out to which only two were prosperous due to their reliance of sugar cane.
