  used

  the
  overall
  appearance
  /
  atmosphere

The
  lighting
  used
  in
  Ted
  Baker
  was
  made
  up
  using
  a
  mix
  of
  generic
  lighting,
  Pin
  Spots
  and
  custom

made
   blown
   glass
   lampshades.
   This
   would
   have
   been
   done
   to
   make
   the
   shop
   bright
   however

highlighting
  clothing
  within
  the
  shop.
  With
  the
  Pin
  Spots
  creating
  a
  narrow,
  however
  bright
  beam
  that

ensured
   that
   they
   covered
   a
   single
   item,
   made
   that
   item
   stand
   out
   next
   to
   another.
   The
   generic

lighting,
  which
  the
  custom
  lampshades
  were
  part
  of
  allowed
  ‘the
  audience’
  or
  the
  customers
  to
  find

there
  way
  around
  the
  shop
  easily.
  In
  my
  opinion
  this
  lighting
  design
  really
  worked
  for
  the
  shop,
  as
  it

was
  bright,
  however
  still
  had
  highlighted
  displays.

2. Discuss
  the
  mood
  and
  atmosphere
  created
  (including
  the
  use
  of
  colour
  /
  semiotics)

The
  atmosphere
  in
  Ted
  Baker
  was
  portrayed
  to
  be
  sophisticated.
  This
  was
  done
  in
  many
  ways
  one
  of

them
  being
  the
  lighting
  design.
  This
  was
  because
  of
  the
  blown
  glass
  generic
  lighting.
  However
  this
  was

not
  due
  to
  the
  effects
  the
  light,
  however
  it
  was
  due
  to
  the
  aesthetic
  feel
  that
  the
  lights
  gave
  off.

The
  colours
  in
  Ted
  Baker
  also
  changed
  the
  atmosphere
  that
  was
  created.
  This
  was
  down
  to
  the
  colour

and
  their
  connotations.
  Red,
  black
  and
  browns
  are
  used
  in
  Ted
  Baker.
  These
  colours
  all
  signify
  wealth

and
   passion.
   The
   blacks
   and
   brows
   also
   give
   connotations
   of
   a
   vintage
   feel,
   which
   flows
   with
   the

theme
  of
  the
  shop
  and
  their
  style
  of
  clothing.

3. Discuss

  in
  Ted
  Baker
  was

  which
  were
  connected
  by

lengths
  of

  that
  ran

  the

In
  the

  items
  that
  were

  This
  made

  • 1. Task  Sheet     As  a  lighting  designer,  research  at  least  three  genres,  in  terms  of  design  differences  and  explore  the   use  of  colour  and  effects.       This  aim  of  this  task  is  to  enable  you  to  develop  lighting  design  techniques  for  a  variety  of  genres  of   the  performing  arts.  Ideas  and  designs  /  specials  seen  today  can  be  adapted  and  used  within  your   future  designs.     Learning outcome 1 requires you to understand lighting design practices, showing conventions for types of lighting design. “At  distinction  level,  you  will  describe  in  detail  a  range  of  designs,  looking  at  different  techniques  used   to  create  effects,  to  set  mood  and  atmosphere  and  show  clear  understanding  of  key  light,  backlight,   top,  front  and  side  light  and  where  and  when  they  could  be  used,  and  potential  colours  for  a  range  of   effects,  and  lantern  positions.  Colour  and  effects  should  be  justified  as  to  how  and  where  it  should  be   used.”   1. Identify  at  least  five  examples  of  where  lighting  is  used  to  enhance  the  overall  aesthetics  of  the   product.   2. Name  the  lights  used  to  achieve  the  overall  appearance  /  atmosphere   3. Discuss  the  mood  and  atmosphere  created  (including  the  use  of  colour  /  semiotics)   4. Discuss  specials  &  effects  (e.g.  lamp  shades,  lights  on  flex  etc)     Assessment and grading criteria To achieve a pass grade the evidence must show that the learner is able to: To achieve a merit grade the evidence must show that, in addition to the pass criteria, the learner is able to: To achieve a distinction grade the evidence must show that, in addition to the pass and merit criteria, the learner is able to: P1 outline alternative approaches and techniques used in lighting design [IE] M1 describe the main alternative approaches and techniques used in lighting design D1 explain the alternative approaches and a wide range of techniques used in lighting design         Genre  One     Lighting  for  Shops   &  Displays   Genre  Two     Musical  Theatre   Genre  Three     Dance  Show
  • 2. Example  One   Shop  or  Retail  Outlet:  Ted  Baker   1. Name  the  lights  used  to  achieve  the  overall  appearance  /  atmosphere   The  lighting  used  in  Ted  Baker  was  made  up  using  a  mix  of  generic  lighting,  Pin  Spots  and  custom   made   blown   glass   lampshades.   This   would   have   been   done   to   make   the   shop   bright   however   highlighting  clothing  within  the  shop.  With  the  Pin  Spots  creating  a  narrow,  however  bright  beam  that   ensured   that   they   covered   a   single   item,   made   that   item   stand   out   next   to   another.   The   generic   lighting,  which  the  custom  lampshades  were  part  of  allowed  ‘the  audience’  or  the  customers  to  find   there  way  around  the  shop  easily.  In  my  opinion  this  lighting  design  really  worked  for  the  shop,  as  it   was  bright,  however  still  had  highlighted  displays.     2. Discuss  the  mood  and  atmosphere  created  (including  the  use  of  colour  /  semiotics)   The  atmosphere  in  Ted  Baker  was  portrayed  to  be  sophisticated.  This  was  done  in  many  ways  one  of   them  being  the  lighting  design.  This  was  because  of  the  blown  glass  generic  lighting.  However  this  was   not  due  to  the  effects  the  light,  however  it  was  due  to  the  aesthetic  feel  that  the  lights  gave  off.     The  colours  in  Ted  Baker  also  changed  the  atmosphere  that  was  created.  This  was  down  to  the  colour   and  their  connotations.  Red,  black  and  browns  are  used  in  Ted  Baker.  These  colours  all  signify  wealth   and   passion.   The   blacks   and   brows   also   give   connotations   of   a   vintage   feel,   which   flows   with   the   theme  of  the  shop  and  their  style  of  clothing.     3. Discuss  specials  &  effects  (e.g.  lamp  shades,  lights  on  flex  etc)   The  generic  lighting  in  Ted  Baker  was  made  up  of  custom  made  lampshades,  which  were  connected  by   lengths  of  wire  that  ran  throughout  the  shop.     In  the  windows  of  the  shop  Pin  spots  were  used  with  barn  doors  on  to  highlight  items  that  were  on  a   raised  platform.  This  made  the  shop  window  look  professional  and  unique.  Which  is  key  and  a  large   shopping  center,  which  have  to  stand  out  from  lots  of  other  shops.
  • 3. Example  Two   Shop  or  Retail  Outlet:  All  Saints       1. Name  the  lights  used  to  achieve  the  overall  appearance  /  atmosphere   All  Saints  used  little  to  no  generic  lighting  and  used  lots  of  fresnels  the  highlight  different  parts  of  the   shop.  This  was  key  in  generating  the  overall  atmosphere,  following  the  design  and  feel  of  the  store.   The  fresnels  in  the  store  were  on  a  generic  lighting  rig  to  generate  the  rustic  atmosphere  the  store   was  going  for,  in  its  ‘set’  design.     2. Discuss  the  mood  and  atmosphere  created  (including  the  use  of  colour  /  semiotics)   The  overall  atmosphere  created  was  a  rustic,  vintage  and  simply  classic  design,  which  ran  through  the   entire  store.  This  is  key  as  it  portrayed  the  style  of  clothing  the  store  sold.     The  colours  in  the  store  were  monotone  (black  and  white)  this  generated  a  theme.  The  colours  signify   purity  and  cleanliness.  Which  are  positive  connotations  on  the  store.   3. Discuss  specials  &  effects  (e.g.  lamp  shades,  lights  on  flex  etc)   Fresnels  with  barn  doors  are  used  not  only  to  light  specific  items  but  also  for  the  aesthetic  feel  within   the  shop.
  • 4. Example  Three   Shop  or  Retail  Outlet:  Foot  Asylum       1. Name  the  lights  used  to  achieve  the  overall  appearance  /  atmosphere   Fluorescent  lighting  tubes,  pin  spots  and  generic  lighting  were  all  used  to  light  this  store.     The  fluorescent  lighting  tubes  were  used  to  highlight  different  parts  of  the  store  hanging  on  different   angles  to  create  edgy  unique  feel  to  the  store,  which  is  key  in  generating  the  right  target  audience.     Pin  spots  were  again  used  to  highlight  different  items  within  the  store.  This  was  done  to  draw  your   attention  to  these  pieces.     Generic  lighting  was  also  used  to  highlight  pathways  around  the  shop.   2. Discuss  the  mood  and  atmosphere  created  (including  the  use  of  colour  /  semiotics)   Bright   neon   colours   we   used   to   create   the   youth   vibe,   which   was   the   stores,   target   audience.   The   bright   neon   colours   also   create   a   club   atmosphere,   which   also   helped   to   aim   at   the   stores   target   audience.     The  stores  bright  colours  create  a  welcoming  atmosphere  for  any  member  of  the  public  the  passes  the   shop,  whether  they  be  young  or  old.     3. Discuss  specials  &  effects  (e.g.  lamp  shades,  lights  on  flex  etc)   In  the  store  they  used  fluorescent  lighting  tubes  in  pallets  to  generate  a  different  atmosphere  for  the   ‘audience’  or  customer.  They  also  used  lights  to  light  up  the  name  of  the  store  behind  the  tills,  which   was  a  central  point  of  the  room  and  the  store.
  • 5. Example  Four   Shop  or  Retail  Outlet:  Selfridges     1. Name  the  lights  used  to  achieve  the  overall  appearance  /  atmosphere   In  this  shop  pin  spots,  film  set  lighting  (floods  with  barn  doors),  fluorescent  lighting  tubes  and  LED   backlight  was  used  to  generate  the  overall  atmosphere.  This  shop  had  multiple  shops  in  one  however   they  all  tied  together  by  the  lighting  and  design.     2. Discuss  the  mood  and  atmosphere  created  (including  the  use  of  colour  /  semiotics)   The  overall  opposite  the  store  was  dark  and  stylistic.  Using  the  listed  lights  above  the  store  generated   a  smart  and  sophisticated  feel,  which  run  throughout  the  different  stores  with  in  this  one  store.  The   noticeable  element  is  that  all  the  stores  still  have  their  own  unique  style.  The  colours  used  in  the  store   are  bright  and  eye-‐popping,  however  some  used  natural  coloured  lighting.   3. Discuss  specials  &  effects  (e.g.  lamp  shades,  lights  on  flex  etc)   Fluorescent   lighting   tubes   were   used   in   a   different   way   to   what   I   had   already   seen   around   the   Trafford  Centre.  They  had  put  T-‐shirts  over  the  tubes  to  highlight  what  was  on  the  stand  below.
  • 6. Example  Five   Shop  or  Retail  Outlet:  Apple     1. Name  the  lights  used  to  achieve  the  overall  appearance  /  atmosphere   This  store  only  used  generic  lighting  to  create  a  bright  white  effect  throughout  the  entire  store.  They   also  used  light  boxes  to  highlight  items  within  the  store;  this  created  highlighted  areas,  which  drew   your  attention.     2. Discuss  the  mood  and  atmosphere  created  (including  the  use  of  colour  /  semiotics)   This  changed  the  atmosphere  using  the  colour  connotations  of  purity  and  cleanliness,  from  the  white   lighting.     3. Discuss  specials  &  effects  (e.g.  lamp  shades,  lights  on  flex  etc)   This  store  used  light  boxes  to  highlight  items  within  the  store;  this  was  key  as  it  was  a  very  bright   white  store  so  they  had  to  find  a  way  to  make  the  items  stand  out.
