Is Silicon Valley A Laggard In
Best Workplace Practice ?
As we move into an age where employees are
empowered to bring and use their own technology to
work (BYOD), some in the Valley are actually more
Victorian in outlook. Some of these programs are
frowned on by VCs, or at least by the ‘permafrost’
layer of management who either don’t get it, don’t
understand or simply wielding what little bit of power
is left to them.
Or maybe it is the IT organization simply defending
their turf, protecting their jobs and very company’s
existence. After all if everyone brings their own device -
why do you need IT support ?

Society And Attitude Need to
Catch Up With Reality
Back in the day’ - the leisure society was the big talk -
with the likes of John Maynard Keynes suggesting that
by 2030, most of us will only be working 15 hours per
week.
So many people (ok - politicians) talk about ‘bringing
jobs back’. I am not exactly sure how this is going to
happen. This article examines issues such as robotics,
the leisure class, skills gap, education and training in a
fact attempt to wake us up to the fact that it just isn’t
going to happen.
A societal shift in thinking and action is required - but
the debate isn’t even on the table.

Work. Is It Irrelevant?
The Future of Work … Redux.
We start off wondering about that leisure time that
John Maynard Keynes talked about all those years
ago. We recognize that today the chances are that you
not only are not living that life of leisure you were
promised, but working twice as harder, with no work /
home boundaries.
Where I examine whether the gig economy is all that it
is cracked up to be and introduce you to the thinking
of Jeremy Heimans - an Australia activist who’s Old
Power, New Power; Old Values, New Values metric
allows you to look at a company through a different
prism.

Talking About Our Generations
Organizations’ marketing departments have long used
personas, segmentation and cute little tags like
‘Boomer’, Millennials, Gen X etc to define us.
It’s time to stop that and understand that every single
person on the planet is exactly that … a person. Each
one of us is unique.
Let’s not assume that we are that different. We are first
and foremost … people … with hopes, dreams,
aspirations, desires, loves. Because you are 80 and not
20 doesn’t change that. Because you are 20 and not 80
doesn’t change that.

Finding Superheroes
Care in recruiting is essential. Automation can make it
easier, but that is not the same as ‘right’. Most recruiting
today is automated, but it still treats the candidate as
another machine.
But there is salvation. The same technology that can
identify how a Paris terrorist is connected to a Brussels
cell and triangulate back to a network of cells across
Europe can be applied to finding the right candidate
for your role – right now.
Uniquely combining structured and unstructured data.
Corporate assets and non corporate assets. What you
know – with what you think you know with associated
percentage likelihood – all delivered through a rich
visual interface.

Changing The Game
A romp through three scenarios where we look at how
the rules that apply to an industry, a group and an
individual are the same.
And it all comes down to the Buckminster Fuller
Quote …
“You never change things by fighting existing reality.
To change something, build a new model that makes
the existing model obsolete.”

Microsoft - LinkedIN To The
Future
My analysis on why Microsoft bought LinkedIN. To my
mind, it was ‘just in time’, as linkedIN I think is
struggling.
Engagement on the platform is down, our personal
data is essentially being sold - though linkedIN
attempts to cover that by its declaration that their
users are first.
I also caution anyone who believes that Microsoft has
a problem in acquiring compaies. They are under new
- and what seems to be very effective leadership.

The ‘I’ In Connection
An examination into the role of a connector in modern
business.
Everybody argues that the connector - some describe
them as the middle man, is essential to how business
works - and yet, unlike a sales person, or a maven (to
borrow terms from Gladwell’s ‘Tipping Point’, the
connector typically goes unrewarded.
How do we change that?

Brexit. It’s About Freedom,
Choice and Democracy
Many people have written and continue expound not
heir theory why Brexit happened.
To my knowledge, no one has taken a look like this.
I posit that when you examine who voted against
staying in the EU, it was essentially older English
people living outside of London.
This are the same people that have largely been
ignored by all governments for a long time - and also
remember what the EU was meant to be.
Yes, they went against all logic and recommendations -
but is it the end of the world ? No.

I Am My Own System Of Record

car registration, license plate, zip code,
various accounts, street address, birthdate
home, work, and cell phones, passport, credit cards
debit cards, PINs, social security
frequent fliers, internet passwords, stocks
checking, HMO, IRA, museums

I know it’s a lot to remember, but
thank god I finally know who I am

When - Exactly - Will It Change
As the world transitions into a knowledge economy ,
the seismic upheavals are affecting everyone.
Corporations seem to be the slowest to catch on -
even though they have the most to lose.
This article is looking at the needful organizations to
shift not just their thinking - but their very structures
and DNA to people centric organization,
It can’t be a façade. It is changing the very way they
even think. [The problem is that they aren’t.

We Need To Talk About An
Injustice
A personal story that is evolving around someone who
has been caught up in the US system of justice.
Even now as he is attempting to turn his life around,
he could end up going back to prison because one
random drug test came back positive.
Countless other tests have come back negative.
Meanwhile, the tests themselves are not even testing
for the drugs, they are testing for the effect that the
drugs have - and even then are recognized that they
are a long way from being reliable.

14 - Putting The Fun Into
[Fun]draising
An exploration into why people seeking to raise funds
down get the best people to do that work.
A sports team owner employs the best coaches and
teams to win for their brand.
A CEO surrounds themselves with talent - ideally
filling in the gaps of their own experience.
But ‘not-fot-profits’ seem to avoid that - which results
in doubling down on doing the way it has always been
done.
Why?
