• Examines sample oral communication activities
• The learner values the functions/ purposes of oral communication.
• The learner writes a [total of] 250-word essay of his/her objective
observation and evaluation of the various speakers watched and
listened to.
3. PRE TEST
Write 3 sentences on your
thoughts on the song “Say
something I’m giving up on you”
4. It couldn’t be over-emphasized-- the importance of oral
communication in daily lives. Just imagine if people
suddenly lose the ability to voice out (even in muffled
sounds) how they feel and think. What could possibly
happen to humans? Scenes like this have been seen in
thriller films and you know how scary and dangerous they
could possibly be.
5. You must therefore cherish the ability to communicate orally.
This is how you started as infants with your baby shrieks and
cries for milk and cuddle; with your toothless giggles which
never failed to melt your parents’ hearts. When you started
forming sounds and then words, the household was so excited
that everyone was doing baby talk to communicate to you,
the littlest member. They nod and nod to whatever audible
sound came from the “mouth of their babe.” Your parents
competed as to whose name was uttered first. This probably
identified you early on with the parent who would hold you most
dear as you grew up.
6. In school, you learned to speak politely first and memorized the
social lines that would identify you as a good member of the learning
community. Teacher would say, “We have a visitor, Class. What will
you say to the visitor?” And you and your classmates all stood up and
answered in the cutest chorus “Good morning, Visitor!” Before you
could learn to read and write, you had already been trained in
communicating orally in school, at home, and around the community.
7. Fast forward to the present and you are told that the best and most
useful skills that you should enhance in order to get ahead in life are
oral communication skills. Not everyone though benefited from the
previous training you supposedly got from the moment you stepped
out of the home and into school. Some suffer from poor proficiency in
language; others simply are psychologically restrained from talking
more confidently and effectively. It’s not yet late though to overcome
these barriers. You can always start appreciating the value of oral
communication skills and make that step towards improving yours.
