Used to tell us more about:
 verbs
 adjectives
 another adverbs
Examples
1) adverb used to modify ‘verbs’ (修饰动词)
Eg:
a. Lucy runs quickly.
b. She spoke softly.
c. Please work carefully.
d. Robin was speaking rudely.
Examples
2) adverb used to modify ‘adjectives’
Eg:
a. The story was very interesting.
b. The movie is really awesome.
c. The food was so delicious.
d. Eric was so exhausted.
More examples
 Many people are now still living a very poor life.
(修饰形容词)
 They will be here pretty soon. (修饰副词)
 Hopefully we will meet again on Thursday.
(修饰 整个句子)
 Jim loves to travel around the world.
FORMATION OF
ADVERBS
1. Most adverbs are formed by adding – ly to adjectives.
2. There are also adverbs that do not end with –ly.

ADVERBS
• Adverb of Degree
• Adverb of Frequency
• Adverb of Manner
• Adverb of Place
• Adverb of Time
ADVERB OF DEGREE
• How much? / To what degree?
• Placed before an adjective or an adverb.
• Tell us about the degree, quality, intensity,
concentration of a particular action.
Example
 He was very sick.
 The wedding was planned thoroughly by them.
 David almost missed the bus as he got up late
today.

FREQUENCY
• How often? Number of times
• It tells how often something occurs.
EXAMPLE
 I sometimes go shopping.
 Have you ever been to Sarawak?
 It often rains at night.

MANNER
• How?
• Occurs after the verb or object.
• It used to state and explain how an action
is carried out.
EXAMPLE
 Hazirah worked angrily and went back home.
 The tortoise crossed the road slowly.
 She danced gracefully for the performance.

ADVERB OF PLACE
• Where?
• Place after the verb or the direct object.
• It used to explain where an action happens.
EXAMPLE
 Please come here. I have something to show you.
 He went there to buy a dictionary.
 I have looked for it everywhere.

ADVERB OF TIME
• When?
• Occur either beginning or end of sentence.
• It tells us when something happens.
EXAMPLE
 Mr Tan wants to see his children now.
 The police will investigate the matter soon.
 Susan will come to our house later.

Instruction: Insert the given adverbs in the correct
places. Rewrite the sentences.
1. My brother drinks tea (every morning-time, at his
office-place).

throughout the day-time).
4. I like drinking milk (in the morning-time/day, very
much-degree).
5. The flight will arrive (early-time, this evening-
day).

Adverbs

  • 2. ADVERBS 副词 Used to tell us more about:  verbs  adjectives  another adverbs
  • 3. Examples 1) adverb used to modify ‘verbs’ (修饰动词) Eg: a. Lucy runs quickly. b. She spoke softly. c. Please work carefully. d. Robin was speaking rudely.
  • 4. Examples 2) adverb used to modify ‘adjectives’ Eg: a. The story was very interesting. b. The movie is really awesome. c. The food was so delicious. d. Eric was so exhausted.
  • 5. More examples  Many people are now still living a very poor life. (修饰形容词)  They will be here pretty soon. (修饰副词)  Hopefully we will meet again on Thursday. (修饰 整个句子)  Jim loves to travel around the world.
  • 6. FORMATION OF ADVERBS 1. Most adverbs are formed by adding – ly to adjectives. 2. There are also adverbs that do not end with –ly.   • 8. ADVERB OF DEGREE • How much? / To what degree? • Placed before an adjective or an adverb. • Tell us about the degree, quality, intensity, concentration of a particular action.
  • 9. Example  He was very sick.  The wedding was planned thoroughly by them.  David almost missed the bus as he got up late today. very almost soon nearly quite completely thoroughly
  • 10. ADVERB OF FREQUENCY • How often? Number of times • It tells how often something occurs.

  • 15. ADVERB OF PLACE • Where? • Place after the verb or the direct object. • It used to explain where an action happens.

  • 17. ADVERB OF TIME • When? • Occur either beginning or end of sentence. • It tells us when something happens.
