This document discusses different models and metaphors of leadership. It explores leadership as creative energy that requires both a capable leader with vision and skills, as well as a group wanting to work together. The first thing a leader does is determine the culture, and the last is thanking everyone for their efforts. Good leaders understand that relationships are key to leadership. Christian spirituality can energize core leadership tasks like servant-hood and developing teams by bringing purpose and empowering leaders to resist harm while living joyfully.
4. What sort of a thing is leadership?
• Leadership is creative energy which needs on
the one hand a capable human being with
vision and skills and on the other a group of
people who want to get somewhere together.
• The first thing a leader does is to determine
the culture, the last the leader does is to
thank everyone and in between those things
it’s all about service (from Max de Pree)
6. THE ASCETIC DIMENSION OF
LEADERSHIP
We are not here to make a living. We are here to
make a difference. (S. Covey)
We make the difference we can as leaders when
we enable others serve their purpose and
make the difference they can
8. COUNTER CULTURAL LEADERSHIP
(THE AESTHETIC)
“Love – of their products, their services, their
constituents, their clients and customers, and their
work – may be the best kept leadership secret of all”
Kouzes and Posner in The Leadership Challenge
Praise, gratitude, encouragement, excellent
communications and feedback, rewards are the high
octane fuel of excellent teams. It is the power of the
leader to say YES to people. The Christian story says we
are all the beloved of God who may be transformed by
hearing and seeing what is beyond us.
9. Maj. Gen. John Stanford on developing
leaders
When anyone asks me that question, I tell them I
have the secret to success in life. The secret to
success is to stay in love. Staying in love gives you the
fire to really ignite other people, to see inside other
people, to have a greater desire to get things done
than other people. A person who is not in love
doesn’t really feel the kind of excitement that helps
them get ahead and lead others and achieve. I don’t
know of any other fire, any other thing in life that is
more that is more exhilarating and is more positive a
feeling than love is.
10. THE KEY
• Good leaders do not just understand that
relationships are important. Good leaders
know that relationships are everything.
Leadership IS Relationship.
• Christian spirituality can bring energy to the
core tasks of high quality leadership which
values relational depth
11. Christian Vision Gives Energy to The
Key Tasks
• It brings another dimension to the task of
leadership as servant-hood. We are offering
our lives for a great purpose.
• It brings another dimension to the high value
we place on our teams, the individuals who
work with us and whose potentiality it is our
privilege to develop
12. A FINAL WORD
• Christian spirituality brings two great gifts.
• God empowers us to say NO , to be a resistance
movement against all that dehumanises, against
cruelty and violence and ignorance
• God is saying YES to us in Christ. We are His
beloved. We are enabled to live life joyfully, in
freedom, with thanksgiving, seeing glory beyond.
• These gifts are not a substitute for the hard graft
of learning how to lead. But they set the scene
and give the energy for leadership of the highest
order
