This document contains links to various blog posts and articles about data visualization and Tableau. It discusses topics like improving chart designs, adding filters, generating high resolution images, creating box and whisker plots, color alternatives, responsive dashboards, histograms using levels of detail, setting parameter values using the JavaScript API, and more. Many of the links include visualizations and tutorials for creating different chart types and integrating additional functionality into Tableau.
4. “I really like the idea behind this chart:
understanding the salary distribution of NFL
players by position. However, there are a few
problems with this chart” - Andy
• The labels are vertical, making them harder
than necessary to read.
• It took me a while to understand the
sorting; the chart appears to be sorted by
average salary.
• The salaries are only for the top 10 in each
position, which means the min, avg and
max are all relative to those 10 players.
• The labelling feels like it’s cluttering the
chart.

5. “To address these concerns, I’ve created the viz
below. In my version, I’ve made the following
changes” - Andy
• Changed the labels to horizontal
• Added options for sorting the viz by any of the
metrics and allowing the user to pick a sort
order
• Added a filter for the team the position belongs
to
• Changed the chart from a bar chart to a dot
plot/DNA chart
• Moved the labels into the middle of the dots,
where they fit, and removed the $ symbols
• Changed the colors to use the official NFL
colors

7. A Practical Introduction to Context Filters in Tableau
http://paintbynumbersblog.blogspot.com/2015/11/lets-put-some-things-into-context.html
“In simple terms, putting a filter in context ensures that all
other filters are dependent on that Context Filter. Tableau
filters otherwise act independently and this is a useful feature,
but may sometimes mean that filtering doesn't do what you
might first expect it to do.”

:pixelratio=1
This is the standard resolution for most devices.
:pixelratio=2
This is the resolution we generate automatically for retina devices. (Max for Maps)
:pixelratio=4
But we can take this higher…
:pixelratio=10
Much, much higher.

Override Action Filters using… Other Action Filters
“The trick is to add an arbitrary field to
the action filter that can be passed by all
the action filters. As you can see in the
screenshot below, I created a field called
"Filter Link" and gave it a value of 1. I
placed it in all the source views so that
the action filter will include it when
passing the filter values to the
destination view. Note that the pill has to
be blue.”
