Australian Aborigines are thought to have the longest continuous cultural history in the world. Yet,
within a hundred years, the near extinction of the Aboriginal culture almost occurred. This single
event, the invasion of the Australian continent by European settlers, changed the lifestyle, the
culture, and the fate of Australian Aborigines. Their entire lives were essentially taken away and
they were forced into a white, European world where the lifestyle change could not have been any
different. Aborigines in Australia today are struggling to deal with a past in which they lost touch
with their culture and now are trying to regain some of that cultural identity.

Australian Aborigines believe that to destroy or damage a sacred site threatens not only the present
inhabitants but also the spiritual inhabitants of the land. Broome described that "Each tribe
believed that its boundaries were fixed and validated by the stories about the movements of their
ancestors, and therefore there was no reason to desire or try to possess the country of another
group: it would have seemed meaningless to them since their creation stories only related to their
own piece of territory" (14). Australian Aborigines traveled around a land that was a symbolic and
religious world. There were not simply rocks, trees, and watering holes but they were objects and
places that the great ancestors had created and places where they still lived. The Aboriginal culture
stressed continuity over change.
The question of intertribal trading and communication occurring between Aboriginal groups is one
that is not agreed upon by investigators of the culture. Broome described in his book, Aboriginal
Australians, some trading between groups but did not place an emphasis on it. In fact, Broome
seemed to describe a slow response to European presence because of the lack of sufficient

Adolescence is a stressful experience for all teens. It is a time of physical and social changes
producing rapid mood swings from sadness to elation. Even an emotionally healthy teenager may
have the constant fear of not being good enough, not making the varsity team, or getting good
grades. Special situations such as a parents divorce can trigger intense sadness and feelings of
wanting to die.
People who usually experience depression, can seem fine. But there are many key signs to show that
they are depressed. Such as, change in school performance, eating habits change, constant
unhappiness, low self esteem, guilt, social isolation, inability to concentrate, irritable or angered
easily, or has a severe lost of energy.
For a teen suffering from severe depression, has feelings of worthlessness that dominates their day.
Despair is ever present and emotional pain feels like it will never end. Any situation of anger or
disappointment may cause the teen to cross the line from wanting to die, to actually trying to kill
themselves.
Many of them feel pains inside of them, that they can't describe when someone asks them how they

Me as a Writer
As a writer, I think that I am not as good as I thought I was back in high school. I see myself as a
student who tries their best, but makes "B" average work. I have never really taken the time to
relate to my papers. I always just wrote what the teacher wanted and handed it in. In my mind, I
never really liked trying to explain in full detail what something meant. Back in high school, my
teachers always wanted me to explain my writing in such depth that a kindergartener would
understand why Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy. Trying to explain my writing was always very

One way to calm my inner critic is a quote from Allegra Goodman's article called Calming the
Inner Critic and Getting to Work on page 309. "Love your material. Nothing frightens the inner
critic more than the writer who loves her work. The writer who is enamored of her material
forgets all about censoring herself. She doesn't stop to wonder if her book is any good, or who
will publish it, or what people will think. She writes in a trance, losing track of time, hearing only

How Do I Learn to Write? Reading and writing go hand–in–hand. Those who learn to write, write so
someone will eventually read it. Those who learn to read, learn to write through reading other
people's work. But, one must first learn how to do one of the following to succeed in both. So,
how does one learn to write? The best, most concise, writers develop from avid readers. Through
reading, I am always learning how to write. I believe reading is essentially the foundation of
learning to write. With active reading skills I can not only get better at writing, but have the
power to excel with my writing experience through different styles of writing. Once I learn to
write well in one style, I can then challenge myself to read different styles of literature. Aside from
through reading, I didn't learn to write. Writing is a trait that can only be acquired by way of
reading literature. Surprisingly, or maybe not so surprisingly, I can learn a plethora of things
from others through writing. Writers are the teachers of new readers. If one reads fascinating
articles, they will be taught to write fascinating articles. Likewise, if someone is a dedicated
reader of mysteries they will have an easier time writing mysteries than a reader who doesn't like
mysteries. I have been asked for reflections of articles, frequently in high school. Every month, we
were obligated to turn in four one page responses to four articles we're given. Although this helped

I'm sure I'm not the first to write about this and I'm certain I'm far from the last.
As I revel in approaching my first birthday and sustaining my sobriety I feel my family is slipping
away from me. How can this be? Surely they see all the hard work that I have been putting into

It's not her fault, it's just the way it is and it's time to recognise and accept that and move on. The
final fact for me was when I was chatting with my sister in the car and she told me that she had
spoken with my wife and said that we both needed to seek professional help. My wife's response
to that sound proposal was, "But Mark goes to meetings!" That tells me that my darling wife sees
all the fault and all the need and responsibility for change on my shoulders and not hers and sadly I

From writing thoughtful poems to research papers, I have experienced composing a diverse
portfolio of literary analysis and criticisms throughout the school year. I started out the year
writing minimally. By the end of the year, I noticed I was able to express my ideas and thoughts in a
more clear and concise way on paper. Ultimately, each composition allowed me to widen my
horizons as a writer and see how I could improve as a writer.
After analyzing many of my written works, I highlighted my writing weaknesses along with notable

When it comes to choice it always seems to be a love hate relationship: we hate making them, but
we can't live without them. Anyone can all look back to a time in our lives where they wish
someone could just pick for us, or times when we wish there were more to choose from. All
Americans have many choices, and it is such a part of our daily lives that we don't even realize it.
Barry Schwartz and Sheena Iyengar's TED talks bring up interesting ideas about choice, how people
deal with them and their affects. They both state that although choice is good, it can also have
negative effects. Schwartz explains what most people believe and experience with choice, while

The second is the more choices the more likely that the best choice can be made, and the third
assumption is that you should never say no to choice. Iyengard evaluates these three assumptions
with various studies where one group is American and the other is another culture. Her studies
help understand why and how Americans make choices in comparison to the rest of the world.
Without doubt, Iyengard's studies and analysis on choice is interesting but Schwartz's was
clearer because it easily communicated the message that was more applicable to the public.
Choices are an important part of everyone's lives and the choices we make can reflex who we are
as individuals. Choice and the ability to choose are excellent and can represent a sense of
freedom. Schwartz's and Iyengard's analysis on choice focused on the effects of choice in people
and how people react and deal with it. Schwartz's Official Dogma and explanation of how
Americans act in response to choice making is the most relatable to individuals and clearly chows
the consequences of too much choice. His analysis can assist to people realize that maybe because
we have more choice doesn't necessarily mean we will make us happier or the best decision will be
