Many existing AGI architectures are based on the assumption of infinite computational resources, as researchers ignore the fact that real-world tasks have time limits, and managing these is a key part of the role of intelligence. In the domain of intelligent systems the management of system resources is typically called “attention”. Attention mechanisms are necessary because all moderately complex environments are likely to be the source of vastly more information than could be processed in real-time by an intelligence’s available cognitive resources. Even if sufficient resources were available, attention could help make better use of them. We argue that attentional mechanisms are not only nice to have, for AGI architectures they are an absolute necessity. We examine ideas and concepts from cognitive psychology for creating intelligent resource management mechanisms and how these can be applied to engineered systems. We present a design for a general attention mechanism intended for implementation in AGI architectures.

Storm is a distributed realtime computation system. Similar to how Hadoop provides a set of general primitives for doing batch processing, Storm provides a set of general primitives for doing realtime computation. Storm is simple, can be used with any programming language, and is a lot of fun to use!

In this talk we will show how Hadoop Ecosystem tools like Apache Kafka, Spark, and MLLib can be used in various real-time architectures and how they can be used to perform real-time detection of a DDOS attack. We will explain some of the challenges in building real-time architectures, followed by walking through the DDOS detection example and a live demo. This talk is appropriate for anyone interested in Security, IoT, Apache Kafka, Spark, or Hadoop. Presenter Ryan Bosshart is a Systems Engineer at Cloudera and is the first 3 time presenter at BigDataMadison!

Storm is a distributed realtime computation system. Similar to how Hadoop provides a set of general primitives for doing batch processing, Storm provides a set of general primitives for doing realtime computation. Storm often coexists in Big Data architectures with Hadoop. We will talk about different approaches to this interoperability between the systems, their benefits & trade-offs, and a new open source library available for high throughput use.

Slides of a talk given at the Workshop on Specialized Networks held in Conjunction with ETFA 2009. The use of networks for communications between the Electronic Control Units (ECU) of a vehicle in production cars dates from the beginning of the 90s. The specific requirements of the different car domains have led to the development of a large number of automotive networks such as LIN, J1850, CAN, FlexRay, MOST, etc.. This talk first introduces the context of in-vehicle embedded systems and, in particular, the requirements imposed on the communication systems. Then, we highlight future trends in the development of automotive communication systems.

In the past 7 years, we have seen the rise of 7 key application architectures among others namely: SPAs Realtime Apps/APIs Hybrid Mobile Microservices Serverless IoT AI Node.js is very popular and performant and the hyper growth of modules and APIs proves the point…to an extent that there is a problem of too much choice and inconsistent quality. Application architectures however cannot afford the same clip of change, else nothing meaningful will ever get delivered. Simultaneously GoLang, Weave, R, Async Java, Swift, Scala et all are competing for the same mindshare. Architects have purists (monoglot) and/or best of breed (polyglot) approaches. Many of them view languages as transient and designs as perpetual. In this presentation, we will discuss standardization of design patterns across these 7 architectures and how node.js can be an integral part of them.

Context-aware apps - apps that know who you are, where you are, and what you've done - have been all the rage the last few years. Facebook's news feeds, Google Now, and Amazon Recommendations are examples of context-aware applications. Over the last few years, advancements in machine learning, big data, NoSQL, and API technologies has drastically reduced the complexity of building such apps, but requires a brand new approach system architecture. This presentation covers: Lambda architecture and Microservices - two new architectural styles to build contextual apps at scale How companies like Twitter and Netflix have implemented lambda architecture and microservices for recommendations, targeting, and more How Apigee uses both new architectures to implement predictive analytics through Insights (our big data predictive analytics product)
