  1. 1. • Leadership • - Defined as one’s ability to get others to willingly follow. - is an integral part of the management functions. - is a product of interpersonal relations. It is a function within a specific social structure of an organization.
  2. 2. • - is a process whereby an individual guides, directs, influences or controls the thoughts, feelings and behavior of others. • (Harold Koontz & Cyril O’Donnel) • - the art or process of influencing people so that they contribute willingly and enthusiastically toward group goals. • - a kind of work done to meet the needs of a social situation.   3. 3. • According to Keith Davis, “Leadership is the ability to persuade others to seek defined objectives enthusiastically. It is the human factor which binds a group together and motivates it towards goals.”
  4. 4. FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLE OF LEADERSHIP
  5. 5. Since people tend to follow those who, in their view, offer them a means of satisfying their own personal goals, the more managers understanding what motivates their subordinates and now the motivations operate, and the more they reflect this understanding in carrying out their managerial actions, the more effective they are likely to be as leaders.
  6. 6. INGREDIENTS OF LEADERSHIP
  7. 7. 1. The first ingredient of leadership is power – the ability to use power effectively and in a responsible manner. 2. The second ingredient of leadership is a fundamental understanding of people – the ability to comprehend that human beings have different motivation forces at different times and in different situations.
  8. 8. 3. The third ingredient of leadership is the ability to inspire – the rare ability to inspire followers to apply their full capabilities to a project. 4. The fourth ingredient of leadership has to do with the style of the leader and the climate he or she develops – the ability to act in a manner that will develop a climate conducive to responding to and arousing motivations.
  9. 9. TRAIT APPROACHES TO LEADERSHIP:
  10. 10. Achievement drive: High level of effort, high levels of ambition, energy and initiative
  11. 11. Leadership motivation: an intense desire to lead others to reach shared goals
  12. 12. Honesty and integrity: trustworthy, reliable, and open
  13. 13. Self-confidence: Belief in one’s self, ideas, and ability
  14. 14. Cognitive ability: Capable of exercising good judgment, strong analytical abilities, and conceptually skilled
  15. 15. Knowledge of business: Knowledge of industry and other technical matters
  16. 16. Emotional Maturity: well adjusted, does not suffer from severe psychological disorders.

  18. 18. Leadership and management are the terms that are often considered synonymous. It is essential to understand that leadership is an essential part of effective management. As a crucial component of management, remarkable leadership behaviour stresses upon building an environment in which each and every employee develops and excels.
