3. Proposal for Mixer
The genre of my magazine is going to be R&B with bits of hip hop in it, as I feel that this genre will attract a lot of people towards my magazine and this is
essential in the popularity of a magazine. The hip hop artists are going to be different to XTRA. On MIXER I will have artists such as Kanye West who has
been in the music industry for a long time. Furthermore, it will be different to XTRA as you will be able to win ‘BEATS’ headphones which will appeal to the
younger demographic of my audience especially ‘digital natives’ (Prensky 2001). I will have synergy with other social media such as Facebook to help sell
the magazine.
The colours of my magazine are black, grey and red are my colours of choice for my magazine. The colour scheme that I have chosen depicts to the reader
that it is urgent that they read this magazine. They grey on the magazine is to connote a sophisticated and that I don’t want to go over the top with my
magazine colours and keep them natural.
The price of my magazine will be £3.50 as I feel this is a perfect price for my magazine as it is new to the market and don’t know whether a lot of people
will buy my magazine. As I will be in competition with other magazines such as ‘The Source’ and XXL I do not want to make my magazine to expensive
otherwise it will not sell especially to the D/E category of the socio-economic needs table. Furthermore, the difference between this magazine is that I want
to aim a slightly older target audience as hopefully I can do this by using older artists such as Kanye West.
The strapline of this magazine is going to be ‘MIX WITH THE UK’S BEST MAGAZINE’ this is short and snappy and also uses language from the masthead.
Lastly, the masthead will be at the top of the page filled in, in bright red, red is a brilliant colour to catch an audiences eye and also connotes the passion the
magazine has for its audience and love of music.
4. Proposal for Xtra
The genre of this magazine is going to be mainly R&B with some eclectic aspects meaning it will be open to a few different
genres. Although the colour scheme is very similar to MIXER (as I do not like too many big bold colours as I feel the magazines
wouldn’t look professional) I have decided to go for a slightly lighter grey. Grey is neutral colour which gives off connotations
of ‘coolness’ but also a sophisticated colour and this is definitely something I want my magazine to give off a very formal look.
The puff promotion on this magazine is going to be different as I want to the magazine to appeal to a slightly younger
audience than MIXER between the ages of 16-25 therefore I will do a WIN TICKETS to someone like SKEPTA. The artists are
going to be a lot more contempoary on the front cover of the magazine. For example I will use NOTES who is a brand new
artist out there and GIGGS who males will especially like. Again I will have synergy with other social medias such as Snapchat
which is becoming a very popular social media with ‘digital natives’ (Prensky 2001). Using Facebook for MIXER will appeal to a
more wide range audience whereas Snapchat will appeal to the younger audience. The price of the magazine will be the same
as MIXER or slightly cheaper as I want to target a more younger audience. The format and syyle will be simple and I will follow
conventions such as the masthead, cover lines down the left and right hand side. I will have the masthead similar to XXL on
the left hand side. The masthead will be black with a white outlining to make sure it stands out on the shop shelf.
5. Mixer front cover
What I like best about the magazine front cover is the
title. This is the first thing that stands out on the page so I
know that when it is on the shop shelf it will appeal to a
pass along audience. Furthermore, I have also used
conventions such as a puff promotion to win ‘BEATS’
headphones and this will appeal to a contemporary
audience. With the DPS I have followed professional
magazine conventions carefully. I have used a pull quote
and a stand first. Furthermore, I have also used a drop
capital in the masthead font style. I have followed my
simple layout then I spoke about in my proposal.
6. Test Photography
These images are just three of the images that my
photographer took. These were the best three in my opinion.
With the white background it made it easier for me.
10. Magazine flat plan for Mixer
Various of the boxes indicate the images of artists that are going to be headlining the
magazine, also various different artists that are going to be used as cover stories in my
magazine.
12. MIXER - House style and colour scheme
The colour scheme of Mixer magazine is red, black and grey. I
think that these three colours contrast well together and will
bring out the best of my magazine. These three colours connote
bold, big and startling colours which I think that will bring out
the best of my magazine when put on the shelves and when
people see the magazine, they will instantly want to buy it.
The reason why I only changed the colours slightly was because
when I made the first magazine I thought that the colour scheme
went really well together, so I thought if I just changed the
colouring a bit that it would look really good.
13. XTRA - House style and colour scheme
The colour scheme of Xtra magazine is red, black and dark grey. I think that these
three colours contrast well together and will bring out the best of my magazine. These
three colours connote bold, big colours which I think that will bring out the best of my
magazine, when the audience see they will want to instantly buy it.
Although the colour scheme is very similar to MIXER (as I do not like too many big bold
colours as I feel the magazines wouldn’t look professional) I have decided to go for a
slightly lighter grey. Grey is neutral colour which gives off connotations of ‘coolness’
but also a sophisticated colour and this is definitely something I want my magazine to
give off a very formal look.

19. Draft Interview
1. Hello Harry, how are you?
I’m very good, thank you, how are you?
2. Yes I am good to thank you for asking. To start off, I hear that you’re bringing out a debut album?
Yes, indeed I am, it’s called “H” and it’s going to be a major hit and I think this is really going to kick start my career. It’s
got some great songs on there that I think a lot of people are going to love. There are also features from major artists
from the R&B industry.
3. What’s the best part about being such a massive artist?
I guess it’s the support from the crowd and your fans that really gets you going as an artist. Once they’ve shown that
they’re interested your music you can really kick start your music career and start to produce more music, for example,
my new album. Meeting the fans is also a big part in your rise to fame, as they are the ones that are supporting you the
whole way through. I remember one time, I had offered VIP tickets to one of my shows and I had a couple of children
come back stage and I had greeted them. One of them had Cerebral Palsy and the other had just been diagnosed with
cancer. My heart sunk as soon as I heard the story and the only way I could thank them was by giving them VIP tickets
to my world tour and an all inclusive stay at the Hotel that I’m also going to be staying at.
4. I just heard you say that you’re going to be touring the world in the major cities, please tell us more?
Yes, I want to tour the world, go to the massive cities and perform for the people that support my music. I feel that
touring the world will allow me to explore the world not just as apart of my music but personally, taking in loads of
ideas that I could use for a next album. Touring the world will obviously be a surreal experience and I am pleasured that
arenas are available for me to do my tour and show to the people of the world what I can offer when I’m performing.
5. What inspired you to start a singing career?
Umm… I guess it was the fact that when I was younger I saw many R&B artists doing their thing on stage or in their
music videos and this inspired me to get up and start my career as an artist. I felt I could put my own style onto my
music if I were to start my singing career, with the tracks that are on my album I believe this has shown why I started
my career.
6. Are there any famous artists you admire?
Yes, there are I admire many artists but I think the one that stands out to me is Drake. I feel that he is a lot of younger
peoples favourite artists and I feel that to me he is my inspiration, as one day I want to achieve what he has achieved. If
I were to get even a percentage of what he achieved I would be very thankful and blessed, but my aim is to be known
world wide for music and known as a public figure also.
20. Step-by-step summary
1. Firstly, I got my background colour and then placed it onto the blank canvas so that I could
have an outline of what I now need to put on the canvas. I put it in like this because I used
this layout and colours on my hand drawn drafts.
2. Secondly, I placed my main image onto the canvas but edited out all the background on the
original image to make sure it was just the artist that I'm focusing my magazine on.
3. Thirdly, I then put in my barcode which consisted of placing 1 of 3 barcodes which we could
choose from and then along with that I put in social media logos of other apps.
4. Once everything had been aligned and sorted, I then placed the magazines name on it
along with the side lines going across on top. Using my font I decided to use to put at the
top of the magazine.
5. I then placed side lines in the remaining spaces in the magazine and put them in bold to
make them stand out. I also placed in the main headline on top of the side lines to make it
stand out but also putting it into the biggest font to make sure everyone knows it’s the
main headline.
21. DPS step by step
1. I first sorted out all the dimensions so that it
allowed me to adjust the width and length of the
pages.
2. I then attached my two pages together and
changed the colour of the background to the
colour of the background I have on my magazine.
3. On the right page I got 3 text boxes in 3 columns
for the main article to be placed in, so that then I
could place all the text into them three boxes at
once.
4. Once the article was place in I changed the font of
the drop capital and then changed the font of the
overall interview.
5. I then put a main headline at the top of the article
so the readers can see what the main focus is.
6. On the left page I placed another image of the
artist I was doing with it being slightly edited on
Photoshop
7. I then finally placed in the final details such as the
writer of the article and the photographer who
took the image.
22. Xtra front cover and DPS
I have used the following desktop publishing
software to make my magazine front cover
and DPS. Photoshop and InDesign. I have
followed similar conventions to XXL such as
the masthead and main image overlapping
the masthead. I have decided to keep the
shadow in to give it a unique look on the
main image.
23. Conclusion
The reason for me choosing Mixer as my first magazine to publish is because I think
that firstly, it stands out to me more than Xtra. I feel that it will produce more sales
than Xtra as I think Mixer stands out and includes bold colours that will shout out to
someone saying “buy me”.
Firstly, I would make social media pages for my magazine before I release my magazine
so that when I release the magazine, my subscribers will then know when a new
magazine is being released and what main superstar artists are going to be in it.
Also would include subscriptions offers for all audiences that are subscribed to my
magazine. For example, offers such as “get 12 months worth of subscriptions for the
price of 6”.
Overall, when comparing Mixer and Xtra I looked at what areas of the magazine stand
out most. When looking at features of Xtra I looked at the masthead and the puff
promotion which I felt stood out the most. Taking a look at Mixer, the masthead stood
out also the image and the cover lines that I chose. I then took it all into consideration
and selected Mixer as my final magazine. Due to the features that I have on Mixer and
I think it will stand out more to the audience.
