Dark Web
The Dark Web refers to
encrypted online content that
is not indexed by conventional
search engines. It is only
accessible through networks
such as Tor and I2P. Dark web
was created by non-other
than the US government, as a
way to help their own
operatives to remain
untraceable.

The Web has also two layers
❏ Surface Web: Surface Web (also called the Visible Web) is the portion of
World Wide Web that is readily available to the general public and searchable
with standard web search engines.
❏ Deep Web: The Deep Web ( also called the Invisible Web) is the hidden part
of the Web, containing a huge volume of content that is inaccessible to
conventional search engines.

9. Evolution of Dark Web
 Early Days: static html pages, crawlers can easily reach
 In mid-90’s: Introduction of dynamic pages, that are generated as a
result of a query.
 Jill Ellsworth used the term “Invisible Web” in 1994 to refer to
website that were not registered with any search engine.
 Another early use of the term invisible Web by Bruce Mount and
Matthew B.Koll of personal Library software in 1996.
 The first use of the specific term “Deep Web”,now generally
accepted, occurred in the aforementioned 2001 Bergman study.
 The first conflation of the terms “Deep Web" with “Dark Web"
came about in 2009 when Deep Web search terminology was
discussed together with illegal activities taking place on the
Freenet and darknet.

11. Conclusion
About 96% of the information is hidden in the Dark Web and rest of the 4% is
visible to the public. Dark Web is the world where we can browse and talk
anonymously. It is 100% safe to surf the legal content. But if you try to access
illegal stuff like stuff, weapons, hit man services etc., then you’ll get busted.
