asthma.
14 people die from asthma.
5. asthma is indicated as “contributing factor” for
nearly 7,000 other deaths each year
Since 1980 asthma death rates overall have
increased more than 100% among all genders,
age groups and ethnic groups.
The death rate for children under 19 years old
has increased by nearly 80% percent since 1980

13. The death rate from lung cancer and cardiopulmonary diseases, which
include heart attack, stroke, asthma, pneumonia and chronic obstructive
pulmonary diseases like emphysema and bronchitis are all on the rise.
The findings of this study provide the strongest evidence to date that long-
term exposure to fine particulate air pollution common to many
metropolitan areas is an important risk factor for cardiopulmonary mortality.
No one knows exactly why pollution is toxic to humans, though many experts
suspect that pollutants cause inflammation in the lungs or prompt the body
to release chemicals that can affect heart function.

15. . Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City
conducted a cross-sectional study to determine if nitrites intake might be
associated with COPD risk.
more than 7,300 subjects Analysis showed that frequent consumption of
cured meats (14 or more servings per month) was linked with "an
obstructive pattern of lung function and increased odds of COPD."
who frequently ate cured meats were also prone to have a lower intake of
fruits, vegetables, fish, vitamin C, and vitamin and mineral supplements
17. COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
refers to asthma, emphysema, chronic
bronchitis, or any combination of the three.
The World Health Organization reports that
almost three million people die of COPD related
complications each year.
18. Researchers found that regular use of the over-the-counter painkiller
acetaminophen was linked to higher rates of asthma and chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as reduced lung function.
Third National Health Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) from 1988-
94. 13,492 participants:
Almost 7 percent had asthma.
Some 12 percent suffered from COPD.
Almost 3 percent were plagued with both.
Of the group, 4.3 percent of the participants said they used acetaminophen
on a daily basis, compared to 8.2 percent who used aspirin and 2.5 percent
who used ibuprofen.
Researchers concluded acetaminophen use was linked to asthma and
COPD--its risk increased in relation to the dosage.

19. Antibiotics don't work for acute bronchitis. Now we have strong evidence
saying that it shouldn't be used for this purpose.
The researchers hoped to test the effectiveness of antibiotics for patients
with acute bronchitis. Physicians commonly prescribe antibiotics to treat this
condition.
The findings shift the burden of proof to proponents of antibiotics to
demonstrate why these drugs should be used in acute bronchitis, the
researchers note. In the meantime doctors should not routinely prescribe
antibiotics for bronchitis.
If the condition changes and there's suspicion of pneumonia, the patient
should be reassessed. Sometimes pneumonia is misdiagnosed as acute
bronchitis.

20. CDC Exaggerates flu stats
The terms flu death and flu associated death
were used interchangeably, when in fact they
are two different figures.
In 2001, there were only 297 deaths that were
directly caused by the flu virus. The other
60,000 were attributed to pneumonia.
Doshi P: Are US flu figures more PR than science? BMJ;331:1412.
21. The 1918 Epidemic Was Not caused by the Flu Virus
Fear of a flu epidemic is based upon the supposed flu of 1918 and 1919 in which
20,000,000 people are said to have died.
But what evidence do we have that these people died from the flu?
And it wasn’t until 1933 that the influenza virus was discovered, and not one scientific
article, documents, lab reports, linking the two together.
scientists at Emory University in Atlanta recently have announced that they discovered
that it was NOT THE FLU virus that killed people in the epidemic. But rather people died
from bacterial infections, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae.
the 1918 flu deaths were caused by frequent use of medications like CALOMEL, used to
treat “sepsis.” Calomel is mercury.
During the same time, if people exhibited flu like symptoms they may have been given
methyl chloride, which was used in for cough syrup in 1918. Methyl chloride is also used
as a refrigerant, a solvent, and it is neurotoxic, with side-effects, e.g., drowsiness, and
coma.
The point is, that in 1918 people didn’t die from the flu virus
According to health researcher Dr. Dan Duffy

24. Researchers believe that as gums recede due to poor oral health,
respiratory illnesses like bronchitis and emphysema worsen.
Accumulation of disease-causing organisms associated with gum disease may
increase the risk for serious lower-respiratory-tract infection in susceptible
subjects.
It is possible that bacteria that normally stick to teeth are sloughed into the
saliva and may be breathed into the upper airways, changing the
environment and paving the way for other germs to infect the lower airways. Oral
conditions likely work with other factors, such as smoking, environmental
pollutants, allergies and genetics to make existing lung problems worse.

32. The new flu drug Relenza is now the subject of a warning letter to medical
professionals around the country that urges caution when the medicine is
used in patients with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
(COPD).
The manufacturer, Glaxo Wellcome Inc., says it has received reports of
serious breathing problems in some patients taking Relenza who also have
underlying lung disease such as asthma and COPD (e.g., emphysema).
The warning letter comes out almost exactly one year after the FDA
approved Relenza in spite of the negative recommendation from its scientific
advisory committee in February 1999.
The panel was concerned the drug didn't actually shorten flu episodes.
