2. Origins of Rock
âą Rock music is a genre of popular
music that originated from âRock
& Rollâ from the U.S in the 1950s.
Rock then expanded into itâs own
genre, mainly in the States and
the UK. Rock is centred around the
Electric guitar, but a rock group is
normally made up from a lead
guitar, rhythm guitar, bass guitar,
drums and a vocalist. Rock music
is typically in the 4/4 time, with a
verse-chorus form. A few well
known first rock bands include:
The Beatles, The Hollies, The
searchers and The Rolling Stones.

The Searchers
3. Origins of
Garage rock.
âą Garage rock was a form of
amateurish rock music particularly
popular in North America in the
60âs. It was called garage music as
there was a perception that it was
rehearsed in a typical garage on a
house. Garage rock songs would
typically be about teenage angst
and highschool life, with a lot of
songs being about problems with
girls. The lyrics are delivered more
aggressively than standard rock
with occasionally shouting and
screaming. âThe Wailersâ and âThe
Kingsmenâ are examples of early
garage rock bands.
4. Codes & Conventions of Garage rock.
âą Garage rock is called garage rock as it is meant to
be amateur type music performed in your
parents garage when youâre a teenager. It has a
very raw/naive style typically talking about
problems/anger. There is a lot of shouting,
distortion and general loud vibe around garage
music to create a loud feeling and noise. Typically
a garage rock band will actually sound better live
than they do on a record as you can really get the
energetic vibe and feelings that the band are
aiming for.
5. Arctic Monkeys â When the sun goes down
âą This music video doesnât include the
band members playing their
instruments at all. Instead the video
follows the story of the lyrics of the
song. The video is quite dark, this is
backed up my the lighting and the
mood set in the video. With a sort of
rough style it matches the song style
as it is recorded with a lot of
distortion and feedback
âą The cutting rhythm copies the pace of
the video, with lots of slow cuts towards
the start of the video where the song is
slow and speeding up majorly when the
music gets louder and faster. The camera
movement also follows this pattern, with
many steady shots at the beginning and
lots of fast moving shots where the
music is fast and louder.
6. The Raconteurs â Steady As She Goes.
âą Editing
The cutting rate in this video
follows the tempo and volume of
the song, When it is quiet, the
editing is slow, when it is loud,
the editing is fast. This video also
uses an effect very similar to that
of the âHate to say I told you soâ
video by The Hives, which is the
motion blur. The blur gives a very
fast paced effect creating
movement in the video.
âą Style
The style of this video is very garage
like, as they are playing in a cramped
small room, similar to a garage. The
video shows all the band members
playing their instruments and
singing along, with various random
shots and overlays of cows and
random things. There is a big
contrast in the band clothing as Jack
White (the lead singer) Is wearing a
leather jacket, yet the rest seem to
be wearing different forms of suits
or shirts and blazers.
âą Camera
There are a lot of close up
shots/extreme close ups in this
video. Mainly on either
instruments or Jack Whiteâs face
as he sings. The camera also is
very jerky at some points when
the chorus kicks in giving a live,
jumping up and down, sort of
feel. The video has either been
filmed on an old camera, or been
made to look that way as the
video is distorted with a low
frame rate and sepia tone.
