PHILIPPINE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF COOPERATIVES 2012 PHILIPPINE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF COOPERATIVES 2012 Presented by Jo B. Bitonio Regular RCDC Meeting, January 10,2012 Sea & Sky Restaurant, San Fernando City,, La Union PHILIPPINE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF COOPERATIVES 2012

In relation to this, the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) created a National and Steering Committee to celebrate the Philippine IYC 2012, composed of cooperative federations /unions, government institutions, academes, cooperative party lists and other relevant institutions tasked to plan, develop and implement programs and activities at the national
Philippine Theme: Transformative Cooperatives for People, Planet, Prosperity and Peace
[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
The country's number one resource is its people. Enhancing therefore their capabilities, developing their potentials and harnessing their skills must take precedence over other priorities knowing that countries that have not developed their human capital are now penalized by slow growth. Today, the cooperative movement in the country with some 7 million members, are one with the new President in advancing a collectivist counter culture as its response to countervail against the dominant paradigm of poverty, powerlessness, violence and corruption.
Topics to be discussed in relation to the nurture and protection of our environment are : 1) Investors Forum on Community Based Forest Management; 2) Environment Protection, Waste Management, and Climate Change; 3) Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture; and 4) Power Forum; 5) Seminar on Sustainable Agriculture and Ecology Environmental Awareness Activities including Rehabilitation of Mangroves, Reforestation of Denuded Areas, and Upland Tree Growing
The spirit of cooperativism shines through amidst the darkness of poverty and social inequities. Where people are poor because they are powerless to craft their destiny, where hunger looms because of social injustice as the mode of production and basic utilities are controlled by a few, where people are in dire economic difficulties because of lack of opportunities, skills and capabilities, it is during this time when cooperatives thrive best.

Levelling off on the definition of terms: Transformative Co-operatives - are the kind of Co-operatives that stimulate, cause, produce, provoke, prompt, make, bring about.... change ,[object Object],[object Object]
Sustainable kind of development - it is the kind of growth that closes inequities that promotes fairness, justice, indiscrimination, equality, proportion, balance without impeding (obstruct, hinder, hamper, delay, block, slow down ) the rights of the future generations to live sustainably.
4P's of SD = People, Planet, Prosperity & Peace - is the interdependent and mutually reinforcing pillars of Sustainable Development. It is beyond economic values. It is interconnection: What happens to one part, affects the others. Are the Co-op’s development initiatives adhere to the 4P’s bottom lines?
If the Rotarians have their 4-way test, we, the Co-ops should also have our 4-P’s test on our development initiatives
PLANET? Does it advance Ecological conservation, Respect for biodiversity, Use of appropriate technology, Promotion of community based resource management for environmental soundness and favourable work environment? PROSPERITY? Does it endorse Food security, Economic viability, Growth with Equity and Greater access to opportunities of marginalized communities? PEACE? Does it encourage Respect for cultural diversity, National sovereignty, Unity and Global cooperation. PEOPLE? Does it promote Social justice, Equity, Gender sensitivity, Participation, Full human potential, Cultural, moral and spiritual sensitivity, Self-determination, Sustainable population? The 4-P’s test on our development initiatives:
The brand of co-operative that we will be showcasing in the IYC and beyond...

  • 1. PHILIPPINE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF COOPERATIVES 2012 PHILIPPINE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF COOPERATIVES 2012 Presented by Jo B. Bitonio Regular RCDC Meeting, January 10,2012 Sea & Sky Restaurant, San Fernando City,, La Union PHILIPPINE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF COOPERATIVES 2012

  • 4. Philippine Theme: Transformative Cooperatives for People, Planet, Prosperity and Peace
  • 5.
  • 9.
  • 10.
  • 11. Sustainable kind of development - it is the kind of growth that closes inequities that promotes fairness, justice, indiscrimination, equality, proportion, balance without impeding (obstruct, hinder, hamper, delay, block, slow down ) the rights of the future generations to live sustainably.

It is interconnection: What happens to one part, affects the others. Are the Co-op’s development initiatives adhere to the 4P’s bottom lines?
  • 13. If the Rotarians have their 4-way test, we, the Co-ops should also have our 4-P’s test on our development initiatives
