“it's no longer a case of asking whether mobile marketing important, we know it is!” But lets take a look back. If we do we will notice that mobile and tablet usage has been in the works for quite some time.
How much mobile and tablet usage has grown and estimated future usage
Blackberry offered their users “specially formatted pages that offered news, weather and stock market data.”
“Tablets actually began decades before the iPad was launched in 2010.”
“Apple's iPad gets most of the credit for that, but the tablet computer was not Steve Jobs’ idea.” But since then the mobile and tablet usage has soared. We are now able to do almost any task over a smartphone or tablet. I mean we can control our houses, our cars, our communications, and more all from the palm of our hands or our voices.
Since 2007 mobile usage has been on a massive rise
This can only be expected to continue to rise.
With the help of alternative suppliers, lower income users are now able to get their hands on a mobile device. This means that more and more people are getting their information from a mobile device.
“Google has led the way in building a set of results optimized for mobile phones and tablets. On Tablets in particular, Google displays results differently depending on which way round the user has their device, landscape or portrait. This directly effects the performance of AdWords listings. If you are advertising through AdWords on these devices, you now need to be one of the most relevant to a user’s search in order to have your advertising show at the top.”
How mobile and tablet usage has impacted web design
Web Sites
“Mobile sites no longer need to be cut down in size and information. Most modern mobile devices have the ability to show full websites that can be easily zoomed in and out for easier viewing on smaller screens”
“Website owners have realized the significant increase in visits from mobile devices and worked hard to optimize their websites for these smaller screen sizes.”
Apps
“Apps for businesses tend to just be ‘interfaces’ for displaying data which could have been seen on a website but with greater ease of use to the user.”
“Apps (or mobile device applications) are seen as the cooler way to connect with brands and online services.”
How mobile and tablet usage has impacted web design
E-Commerce
“those with the latest technology are more likely to spend more through eCommerce transactions. Tie this into an optimized PPC campaign and a responsive website design and there are greater opportunities at the moment to generate higher ROI’s than traditional websites because the competition have not yet invested in this.”
“Website owners have tested and optimized checkout processes specifically for mobiles devices in order to improve conversion rates and reduce drop out rates. Cutting back form lengths and using address look up tools are essential for these users as typing is harder on these devices. Saving users having to log in each time and 1-click purchasing services have now become common as a result of more mobile device eCommerce optimization.”
These are just a few ways mobile and tablet usage has impacted web design.

“A mobile optimized website is a condensed format of the original website which usually aims to be highly functional yet simple to use and navigate.”
“Mobile Friendly fits right into the context of current design. It will look the same on a desktop or mobile device only smaller. These websites function well if you aren’t concerned with the extra scrolling and zooming needed because the size shift.”
Responsive websites “are websites that have been specifically designed to optimize their viewing capability on multiple screen sizes and from a variety of different sources including smart televisions, cell phones, tablets, computers, and internet ready media players.”
