Holding God to His Word

Jacob wrestled with God; he would not let Him go until he received a blessing from Him (Gen.
32:22–32). So it was with the Canaanite woman. Though Jesus seemed to ignore and reject
her, she continued to call upon His name and look to Him for help (Mt. 15:21–28). Even when
the Lord called her a little dog, she held on to Him in faith and would not let Him wriggle out of
His words: ―Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” This
Gentile woman shows herself to be a true Israelite, who struggles with God and man in Christ
and prevails. ―O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire‖ (Mt. 15:27–28).
This is the sanctifying will of God (1 Thess. 4:1–7)—to test your faith in order that it may be
refined and strengthened. For tribulation produces perseverance; perseverance, character;
character, hope. And hope in Christ does not disappoint (Rom. 5:1–5).
 1 Jesus, lover of my soul,  3 Thou, oh, Christ, art all I want,
  Let me to thy bosom fly,             More than all in thee I find;
  While the nearer waters roll, Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,
  While the tempest still is high; Heal the sick, and lead the blind,
  Hide me, oh, my Savior, hide, Just and holy is thy Name,
  Till the storm of life is past; I am all unrighteousness!
  Safe into the haven guide, Vile and full of sin I am,
  O receive my soul at last. Thou art full of truth and grace.

 2 Other refuge have I none,  4 Plenteous grace with thee is
  Hangs my helpless soul on thee, found,
  Leave, ah! leave me not alone,       Grace to pardon all my sin;
  Still support and comfort me; Let the healing streams abound,
  All my trust on thee is stayed,      Make and keep me pure within;
  All my help from thee I bring, Thou of life the Fountain art,
  Cover my defenseless head Freely let me take of thee,
  With the shadow of thy wing. Spring thou up within my heart,
                                       Rise to all eternity.

  • 13. SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT (Reminiscere) Genesis 32:22–32 1 Thessalonians 4:1–7 or Romans 5:1–5 Matthew 15:21–28 Holding God to His Word Jacob wrestled with God; he would not let Him go until he received a blessing from Him (Gen. 32:22–32). So it was with the Canaanite woman. Though Jesus seemed to ignore and reject her, she continued to call upon His name and look to Him for help (Mt. 15:21–28). Even when the Lord called her a little dog, she held on to Him in faith and would not let Him wriggle out of His words: ―Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” This Gentile woman shows herself to be a true Israelite, who struggles with God and man in Christ and prevails. ―O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire‖ (Mt. 15:27–28). This is the sanctifying will of God (1 Thess. 4:1–7)—to test your faith in order that it may be refined and strengthened. For tribulation produces perseverance; perseverance, character; character, hope. And hope in Christ does not disappoint (Rom. 5:1–5).
