1. The Law of God is good and wise
And sets His will before our eyes,
Shows us the way of righteousness,
And dooms to death when we
transgress.
2. Its light of holiness imparts
The knowledge of our sinful hearts
That we may see our lost estate
And turn from sin before too late.
3. To those who help in Christ have
found
And would in works of love abound
It shows what deeds are His delight
And should be done as good and
right.
4. But those who scornfully disdain
God’s Law shall then in sin remain;
Its terror in their ear resounds
And keeps their wickedness in
bounds.
5. The Law isgood; but since the
fall
Its holiness condemns us all;
It dooms us for our sin to die
And has no pow’r to justify.
6. To Jesus we for refuge flee,
Who from the curse has set us free,
And humbly worship at His throne,
Saved by His grace through faith
alone.
5. I left my baby and it feels so bad
Guess my race is run
She's the best girl that I ever had
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the…law
won
6. “They say it's the number of people I
killed, I say it's the principle.”
“To me, this world is nothing but evil,
and my own evil just happened to
come out cause of the circumstances
of what I was doing.”
"I don't believe in man, God nor
Devil. I hate the whole damned
human race, including myself... I
preyed upon the weak, the harmless
and the unsuspecting. This lesson I
was taught by others : Might makes
right."
7. Roger gathered a handful of stones
and began to throw them. Yet there
was a space round Henry, perhaps
six yards in diameter, into which he
dare not throw. Here, invisible yet
strong, was the taboo of the old life.
Round the squatting child was the
protection of parents and school
and policemen and the law.
8. "If you live today, you
breath in nihilism ... it's
the gas you breathe. If I
hadn't had the Church to
fight it with or to tell me
the necessity of fighting it,
I would be the stinkingest
logical positivist you ever
saw right now."
9. Law is as I've told you before,
Law is as you know I suppose,
Law is but let me explain it once
more,
Law is The Law.
Law is neither wrong nor right,
Law is only crimes
Punished by places and by times,
Law is the clothes men wear
Anytime, anywhere,
Law is Good morning and Good
night.
10. The difference, however, is in the
works, because of the difference in the
men who strive to live according to this
Law and will of God. For as long as
man is not regenerate, and [therefore]
conducts himself according to the Law
and does the works because they are
commanded thus, from fear of
punishment or desire for reward, he is
still under the Law, and his works are
called by St. Paul properly works of the
Law, for they are extorted by the Law,
as those of slaves; and these are saints
after the order of Cain [that is,
hypocrites].
11. But when man is born anew by the
Spirit of God, and liberated from the
Law, that is, freed from this driver, and
is led by the Spirit of Christ, he lives
according to the immutable will of God
comprised in the Law, and so far as he
is born anew, does everything from a
free, cheerful spirit; and these are called
not properly works of the Law, but
works and fruits of the Spirit, or as St.
Paul names it, the law of the mind and
the Law of Christ. For such men are no
more under the Law, but under grace,
as St. Paul says, Rom. 8:2 [Rom.
7:23; 1
12. Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law,
locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. 24 So the law
was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. 25 Now
that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. 26 So in Christ
Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were
baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. (Gal 3:23-27)
froureÑw:to guard, protect by a military guard, either to prevent hostile invasion, or
to keep the inhabitants of a besieged city from flight
paidagwgo/v: a tutor i.e. a guardian and guide of boys. Among the Greeks and the
Romans the name was applied to trustworthy slaves who were charged with the
duty of supervising the life and morals of boys belonging to the better class. The
boys were not allowed so much as to step out of the house without them before
arriving at the age of manhood.
13. It is correctly said that in conversion,
God, through the drawing of the Holy
Ghost, makes out of stubborn and
unwilling men willing ones, and that after
such conversion in the daily exercise of
repentance the regenerate will of man is
not idle, but also cooperates in all the
works of the Holy Ghost, which He
performs through us.
14. Questions:
How carefully does God want
us to keep His commands?
What prevents u from
keeping God’s
commandments perfectly?
Can anyone, then, be saved
by the Law?
What purposes does the Law
then serve?

15. We believe God wants us to keep His
commandments perfectly in thoughts,
desires, words, and deeds. Our sinful
nature makes it impossible.
Lev. 19:2 Be holy because I, the Lord
your God, am holy.
James 2:10 Whoever keeps the whole
law and yet stumbles at just one point is
guilty of breaking all of it.
Ps. 14:3 All have turned aside, they
have together become corrupt; there is
no one who does good, not even one.
Eccl. 7:20 There is not a righteous man
on earth who does what is right and
never sins.
Is. 64:6 All of us have become like one
who is unclean, and all our righteous
acts are like filthy rags.
1 John 1:8 If we claim to be without
sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth
is not in us.
The apostle Paul grieved over his
failure to keep the Law (Rom. 7:15-
20).
Pray: My Lord and Savior, my only
High Priest, how merciful You are!
You have fulfilled the burdensome
Law for me. You have sacrificed
Yourself for me. You did at all times
intercede for me. In You, in You
alone, will I trust. You will do it, You
will save me. Amen. (C.M. Zorn,
1846-1928).
16. We believe the Law condemns everyone.
First, the Law helps to control violent
outbursts of sin and keeps order in the
world (a curb). Second, the Law accuses us
and shows us our sin (a mirror).
Gal. 3:10-11 All who rely on observing the
law are under a curse, for it is written:
"Cursed is everyone who does not continue to
do everything written in the Book of the
Law." Clearly no one is justified before God
by the law.
1 Tim. 1:9 We also know that law is made not
for the righteous [good people] but for
lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and
sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those
who kill their fathers or mothers.
Rom. 2:14-15 Indeed, when Gentiles, who
do not have the law, do by nature things
required by the law, they are a law for
themselves, even though they do not have the
law, since they show that the requirements of
the law are written on their hearts, their
consciences also bearing witness, and their
thoughts now accusing, now even defending
them.
Rom 3:20 Through the law we become
conscious of sin.
Rom. 7:7 I would not have known what
coveting really was if the law had not said,
"Do not covet."
Pray: Lord, my God, because You say it
unto me, therefore will I believe it, and
cling to it in life and death, that I am
justified in Your sight by faith, without the
deeds of the Law. Trusting in this, will I
depart, and lifting up my head before Your
judgment-throne, I shall say: You, O God,
have forgiven my sins unto me and thereby
declared me righteous. I pray You, my
God, keep me in faith which alone will
save me. Amen. (C.M. Zorn)
17. We believe Third, the Law teaches us
Christians what we should and should
not do to lead a God-pleasing life (a
guide). The power to live according to
the Law comes from the Gospel.
Ps. 119:9 How can a young man keep his
way pure? By living according to Your
word.
Ps. 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my
feet and a light for my path.
1 John 4:9, 11 This is how God showed
His love among us: He sent His one and
only Son into the world that we might live
through Him.... Dear friends, since God so
loved us, we also ought to love one
another.
Luke 10:27 “You shall love the Lord your
God with all your heart and with all your
soul and with all your strength and with all
your mind, and your neighbor as
yourself.”.
Pray: Heavenly Father, illumine me with
Your Holy Spirit for Christ’s sake that
in the bright mirror of the Law I may
rightly see my manifold, great and
grievous sins and truly realize how
terrible is Your wrath because of sin,
and how awfully You will punish all the
impenitent for their transgressions.
From the Gospel, however, let me also
learn to know Your kind fatherly heart,
which through Christ is opened unto me,
so that with a broken spirit and a
contrite heart, but nevertheless not
despairing, on the contrary, firmly
trusting Your grace, I may come to
confession, where You will surely deal
with me according to Your fatherly
goodness, and will forgive me all my
sins. Amen. (C.M. Zorn)
