This document discusses behaviorism, a theory that all behavior is learned through reinforcement and punishment. It outlines some of the major thinkers in behaviorism like Ivan Pavlov and B.F. Skinner. In classrooms, behaviorism can be applied through a system of rewards for positive behaviors and punishments for negative behaviors. The author believes behaviorism could be used in their own classroom through contracts, classroom economies, and positive/negative reinforcement.

What is behaviorism?
Behaviorism is a theory that states that all behavior
is learned.
Thistheory also says that behavior is learned
through a system of rewards and punishments.
Behaviorism can be studied with no consideration of
mental state.

What is behaviorism?
Reinforcement (both negative and positive)
increases the probability that the behavior will
happen again.
Punishment decreases the likelihood that the
behavior will happen again.
Does not take into account free will.

Ivan Pavlov
Pavlov is known for his
experiments on dogs, where
he conditioned dogs to
salivate at the sound of the
bell.
He used a stimuli and the
dogs natural reflex.
This technique is called
classical conditioning.

Using behaviorism in the classroom
Use a system of rewards and punishment
Reward
desirable behaviors such as completing
homework, correctly answering questions, etc.
Punish negative behaviors such as speaking out in
class, not following class rules, etc.

Using behaviorism in the classroom
Use
positive reinforcement: extra time on the
computer, candy, stickers, praise
Use
negative reinforcement: optional final exam if all
homework was completed satisfactorily,
Use punishment: late assignments are given a
“0”, being late means no recess

Using behaviorism in MY classroom
Rewarding desired behaviors and punishing
inappropriate ones
Usinga classroom economy to promote desired
behaviors
Receiving classroom “credit” or “money” to spend on
items in class store

Using behaviorism in MY classroom
Using contracts to influence behavior
Provisions of contract: students complete all
homework and assignments, stay on task and
follow all rules
Consequences (positive/negative reinforcement
and punishment): praise, treats, no recess,
detention
