Therefore, a need exists to develop a structured approach to train and educate the most appropriate nurses to the most appropriate level. However, this is in its infancy and requires further development and buy-in prior to implementation. Similarly, the World Health Organization and International Council of Nurses have developed a set of ‘disaster nursing competencies’ which will assist to progress this need (WHO & ICN, 2009).
