Book study group - PPT sp 15

2. WHAT IS A BOOK STUDY?
A book study or book club is when a group of people get together and read
a book for pleasure, learning, or self improvement.
A book study can take place anywhere. Some people host book club in
their homes, local libraries, or schools.
Topics usually center around ideas that are important to all members.
Books need to be relevant to all members in order to have a successful
book study.
3. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR TEACHERS TO
PARTICIPATE IN BOOK STUDIES?
It is important for teachers to model the correct behavior that they expect in
their students. Students are asked to read chapter books and discuss
and write about important concepts within these books. As teachers,
we need to lead by example. Students look to us as role models and if
we grumble about having to do a book study, they will not want to do
one as well.
4. WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL BOOK STUDY?
A good book study has members who are enthusiastic and ready to share
ideas and learn from each other. Members should be exited about
meeting and discussing concepts learned. Good group members will
do their part by reading their assignments and answering questions.
5. HOW CAN TEACHERS MAKE TIME FOR BOOK
STUDIES?
A school that I worked for met in the mornings before school for 15
minutes. We had a book that we were reading together and we would
take turns discussing ideas from the book. This really helped teachers
start the day off in a positive note and teachers were focused on ideas
discussed throughout the week.
Some schools meet once a week at a common planning time or once a
month after school. Some book studies can also be done online.
6. WHAT ARE SOME GOOD TOPICS OR BOOKS TO
FOCUS ON?
Classroom management
Incorporating writing in all subject areas
Parental involvement
Positive behavior plans
Current curriculum or standardize testing
7. EXAMPLES
A school I worked at did a different approach to book studies. They
allowed the teachers to chose the books they wanted to study.
Teachers submitted names of books or concepts to the principal and
the principal would come up with a list of 5 or 6 books for teachers to
choose from. Teachers were allowed to pick the book they wanted to do
and divided into teams. At faculty meetings each team summarized
what they were learning to the rest of the staff. This way each teacher
has their own choice and they get a chance to redeliver.

How Book Groups Bring Change

Teaching Children to Care by Ruth

Teachers from this school district met voluntarily, during the summer, to
study the book above. The focus of the group was to look for students’
strengths and plan techniques and assessments based on these
strengths. This book study focused different intelligences. The purpose
of the study was to come up with ways to meet these students needs
and continued on throughout the school year.

CHANGE.ASPX
Book groups should be voluntary. This not only increases the
likelihood that participants will be receptive but also reminds everyone
that the meetings should be enjoyable.
Teachers need to play a role in choosing books. Often, I offer
several titles to the faculty and let them choose which book to study,
and sometimes I ask faculty members to nominate titles.
Teachers should facilitate the discussion. The administrator
should provide the food and facilities, but the faculty should own the
process. As principal, my job is to elicit teachers' participation, not to
direct or dominate, whether the group meets during the school year or
over the summer. It's a time for me to work on my listening skills.
