2. Basics about adventure tourism
❖ Adventure tourism is a different type of tourism.
❖ Adventure tourism is a package of recreation, enjoyment, education and the
thrills of participating in an adventure.
❖ Young people are attracted to this form of travel because of the excitement
and risks involved.
❖ Adventure tourism gains much of its excitement by allowing the tourists to
step outside their comfort zone.
❖ Adventure travel is a type of niche tourism, involving exploration or travel
with a certain degree of risk, and which may require special skills and
physical exertion.
3. Classification of adventure tourism
Adventure sports can be classified into three.
(1) Land – based
(2) Water – based
(3) Aero based
4. Adventure sports

5. Land based adventure activities
Adventure on land is available in many forms, which may be natural or man-
made.
Natural landforms include forests, deserts, hills, and mountains covered with
their natural flora and fauna or snow.
Safari, motor car racing etc are also popular man-made tourism forms.
6. Rock climbing
★ An activity in which people climb the faces of rock or rock walls,
typically using rope and equipment.
★ All aspects of rock climbing require a high dree of knowledge and
technique
★ Extremely High, endurance, strength, gymnastic ability, and
psychological fortitude will be tested to the extreme.
★ Rock climbing is found usually on the upper most slopes of
high peaks.
7.
8. Major rock climbing destinations in India

2. Manikaran peaks, Manali
3. Sonamarg in Kashmir
4. Gangothri, Utharanchal
5. Mount Abu, Rajasthan

9. Mountaineering
❏ Mountaineering is the set of activities that involves ascending
mountains.
❏ Mountaineering demands physical ability and suitable equipment.
❏ Mountaineering (also referred to as 'mountain climbing' or ―mainly
in Europe― 'Alpinism') is the sport of climbing a mountain.
Regardless of the length of the trip ―which can range from a few
hours to multi-day expeditions―, mountaineering is more physically
demanding than hiking.
❏ Low to High, endurance and strength may be tested on a mountain.
12. Mountaineering is quite popular in India, since the entire northern and north-eastern borders are the
Himalayas, the highest mountain range in the world. The apex body in India is the Indian Mountaineering
Foundation, which is affiliated to the International Federation of Sport Climbing.
India has several premier mountaineering institutes. The four National Institutes are :
● Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling
● Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi
● Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports, Pahalgam
● National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS), Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh
The other institutes are :
● Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS), Manali
● Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering]], Gulmarg
● Swami Vivekanand Institutes of Mountaineering, Mount Abu

15. Ladakh with all the towering
mountains and rugged
terrain of the Karakoram,
Zanskar and the Ladakh
ranges, not surprisingly, is a
mountaineers’ paradise. The
climbing season extends
from mid-May to mid-
October.The Suru and
Zanskar valleys provide
some of the best climbs.
Popular climbs include Stok
Khangri (6,121m), in the
Zanskar mountain range,
which is the most accessible.

National Prak, located
in vicinity to the peak,
consists of the best
high altitude flora and
fauna.
This is the highest peak
located entirely within
India
It is a part of
Himalayan mountain
ranges (Garhwal)

located in Chamoli
district of Uttarakhand
18. The very basics of mountain climbing equipment cover the basics of wilderness survival:
● Compass: a quality compass.
● Backback: Bring at least a 45-liter backpack, preferably one with a pouch for a large
water bladder. Water is utterly indispensable and used for cooking, cleaning, and
hydration.
● Water bottle: A redundant water source like a water bottle is important for emergency
reasons. Access to water when out in the wilderness is the difference between life and
death.
● Map: a map of the area
● Food: Meal planning can vary depending on the person.
● Rain gear: Lightweight rain gear be a little careful with this purchase as some rain jackets
will do almost nothing to protect you from water.
● A place to sleep: A sleeping shelter of a tarp and a sleeping bag.
● A good set of climbing shoes
● A hand wrap and helmet
19. Trekking
❖ Trekking is a form of walking, undertaken with the specific purpose of
exploring and enjoying the scenery. It usually takes place on trails in
areas of relatively unspoiled wilderness.
❖ The great mountain ranges are some of the most beautiful and
interesting areas of the world to visit.
❖ As they are often not served by roads, they can also be the most remote
and difficult places to get to and the only real way to see them is on
foot.
21. Major trekking routes in India

24. Hiking, Trekking and Mountaineering
The easiest of the three is hiking. These are usually half-day to one-day tours, like these hikes in the
German Alps.Hikes usually range between 2 to 8 hours. For hiking tours, tourist need minimal
equipment compared to trekking and mountaineering.
Trekking is between hiking and mountaineering regarding difficulty. Although it’s more similar to hiking.
The difference being that treks are longer than hikes. These trips usually take two or more days. Treks
usually start in one place and end in a different one. The distance can vary anywhere from ~40 km to
several hundred kilometres away.
Of the three, mountaineering is by far the most challenging. It’s a more technical variation of trekking
that takes tourist to higher peaks. Often to ones that are over 5000 meters above sea level. These are
also multi-day trips that require a lot of previous physical and technical training.
25. Safari

environment.

means of transport available in these often inhospitable stretches of land.

Europe and U.S.A. remains the rallying centre of the world and the prominent rallies are Monte Carlo, the Alpine,
the Aero Polis, the Tulip Rally in the Netherlands, the RAC British International, and the Norwegian Rally.
A rally is not a race: it is a test of the skill and endurance of a car and its driver. A rally takes to lesser-known
and traversed routes. Motor rallies are conducted through beaches, deserts, hills, mountains, dense forests,
riverbeds etc. It draws in about thousands of people as participants as well as spectators.
One of the more well known rallies, till about a few years back, was the Himalayan car rally, which has since
been discontinued.
