4. INTRODUCTION
Since the beginning of the semester, we were assigned into groups of 4 or 5. For our
final assignment, students were required to conduct a social psychology conceptual video clip, a
presentation and a report. Students are required to understand and apply 5 different concepts
from 5 different chapters in the story of the video. The video should be 3 to 5 minutes long and
have clearly include 5 different psychological concepts from the choices taught and discussed in
class. The story is then acted out by every group member and also with some help from other
students in class.
Before filming, we discussed what concepts we should use and how to incorporate them
into a story. The five concepts include Persuasion(Authority), Extrinsic Motivation, Sexism,
Bystander Effect, and Displacement- Aggression. With some in-depth research and
understanding of the concepts, we learnt how to translate them and showcase them in our
video. The purpose of this assignment is to allow students to recognise the concepts and apply
critical thinking in application of real-world experiences. This project allows students to learn
how to implement the psychological concepts in a practical environment. This report
documents our understanding and explanation of the concepts applied in our video.
Through this assignment, we were able to understand the psychological concepts in a
social context relating to our daily life experiences.

B. Procedure
1. 22 January 2016. First meeting. We discussed with all the group members about the
storyline and what concepts we could use. After the bystander effect concept was
suggested to be used, we decided to base our theme on someone’s bad day. Hence, the
storyline and concepts followed as we had the flow an rough idea of how our story should
go. The meeting ended after we finalised the storyboard and the concepts to be used.
2. 24 January 2016. We communicated through Whatsapp to finalise the roles and materials,
apparatus and clothing needed to bring.
3. 25 January 2016. All group members were present to do the video recording. We printed
out the script and discussed what setting we could use for the story. For the home setting
where Crystal and her mother were involved, we decided to shoot the video at DK Senza
apartment where one of our group mates were staying at. We filmed most of the scenes at
Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus as it was convenient for all group members to gather
at. We took the scene where Crystal’s bag was snatched and there were bystanders looking
at the area outside Student Life Centre as there were friends around to help us act as
passer bys. Lastly, we filmed the scene for Crystal’s interview session in block E level 9
academic suites as we wanted a professional working environment. The video filming
started from 11am and ended at 5pm. After that, tasks were assigned to each of us to do
the video editing, the presentation slides and the video report.
4. 1 February 2016. Final meeting. All the group members meet up to finalise the
presentation slides and the video report. We also discussed which parts should each group
member present on to ensure a smooth presentation later on.

8. Storyline
Crystal is a fresh graduate looking for a job. She has her eyes set on a well known
company called LT company. She decides to try her luck by sending in her resume for her job
application. After that, she tells her mother about her plans in joining LT company but her
mother tells her to apply for another company. While Crystal thinks LT company will provide
her the best working opportunities for her to develop and showcase her capabilities, her
mother thinks otherwise. Her mother then persuades her to try out the interview for another
company called BC company. Unable to reject her mother’s orders, Crystal is persuaded to go
for the interview since her mother thinks it will benefit her more.
The next day, Crystal goes for the interview for her job application into BC company.
While waiting for her turn, she has a conversation with another interview candidate. He tells
Crystal that he really needs the job as he has to fund his dying daughter’s medical operations.
They share words of comfort and encouragement and after his interview, Crystal learns that he
has succeeded in securing a place at BC company and congratulates him.
During Crystal’s interview session, the interviewer who is also the head of the company
expresses his disapproval of her. He claims that he does not want to hire females in his
company as he thinks females are not capable enough to become engineers. He then further
confirms his prejudice against females as he offers her a job as a cook in their cafeteria as he
believes females should work in the kitchen. Heartbroken and insulted, Crystal rejects the offer
and leaves.
As Crystal was walking dejectedly along a busy walkway, her handbag was snatched.
Even though there were passer bys standing around observing the whole situation, none give in
to her plea of help. After struggling and tugging onto her handbag for sometime, she eventually
lost her energy and could only look on as her handbag gets snatched away.
After a bad day, Crystal went back home feeling frustrated and upset. When her mother
expresses her concern for her, Crystal instantly fires back her pent up frustration and anger by
yelling at her mother and blaming it on her for her misfortune. A few hours later after she has
calmed down, Crystal apologises to her mother for her rude behaviour.
A few days after that, Crystal receives an unexpected call from LT company that her
application was accepted and she will be welcomed into joining their company. She is
overjoyed with this good news and tells her mother about it.

12. Concepts and Definition
1. Persuasion
Persuasion is defined as the process by which a person’s attitudes or behaviour are,
without duress, influenced by communications from other people. Based on the video, Crystal
is influenced by her mother who is a figure of authority and trustworthiness. In Robert Cialdini’s
book on persuasion, defined six "weapons of influence”, Authority is when people tend to obey
authority figures, even if they are asked to perform objectionable acts.
In the video, Crystal really wants to get into LT company and expresses her desire and
anticipation to her mother. She thinks LT company will provide the best working environment
for her to develop herself as an engineer. However, her mother thinks otherwise. Her mother
wants her to get into BC company and persuades Crystal to go for the interview. Crystal,
although reluctant and certain that she does not want to work in BC company is persuaded to
try out for the interview since her mother thinks it will benefit her more than LT company.
When the figure of authority(Crystal’s mother) is present, Crystal is persuaded to do whatever
her mother wants her to do as Crystal trusts her mother’s experience and good intentions. This
can be seen when her mother tells her to “listen to mummy(figure of authority), BC company
will allow her to earn more money than LT company”(good intentions, wants Crystal to have a
better quality of life). In the end, Crystal tries out for the interview for BC company.
13. 2. Motivation
Definition: when an individual is motivated by external factors, as opposed to the
internal drivers of intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation drives the individual to do things for
tangible rewards or pressures, rather than for the fun of it.
Explanation: In the second scene, is when the other interview candidate is sitting down
there quietly waiting for his turn. After the man has a conversation with Crystal, we knew that
his daughter is dying and need a huge amount of money for her heart operation. This make the
man pressure and he do his best in this interview because this company has a high pay and he
doesn’t want to lose his chances to get a high pay by working in this company. Therefore, he is
driven by the need to save his daughter and fund for her medical expenses. He does his best to
show that he is capable of working in that company during the interview. In the end, he
successfully manages to secure a job in his desired company.
14. 3. Sexism
Definition: Sexism or gender discrimination is prejudice or discrimination based on a
person's sex or gender. Sexism can affect any gender, but it is particularly documented as
affecting women and girls. It has been linked to stereotypes and gender roles, and may include
the belief that one sex or gender is intrinsically superior to another. Extreme sexismmay foster
sexual harassment, rape, and other forms of sexual violence.
Explanation: In the third scene, the interviewer of the company that Crystal’s mother
suggested was a sexist apparently who believes that only males deserve to work in the
engineering industry. When Crystal went into the interview room, the first impression of the
interviewer toward Crystal was not a good one. He was annoyed to see another female
interviewee coming in for the interview. During the whole interview section, the company
interviewer didn’t pay attention to what Crystal said and the only thing in his mind is that they
do not need any female engineers. He then further confirms his prejudice against females as he
offered her a job as a cook in their cafeteria as he believes females should work in the kitchen.
15. 4. Bystander effect
The bystander effect occurs when the presence of others discourages an individual from
intervening in an emergency situation. It shows that the greater the number of people present,
the less likely people are to help a person in distress. We are more likely to take action if there
are only one or a few observers at the scene. The factors that cause this is because when there
are more people present, there is a diffusion of responsibility. The second reason is the need to
behave in correct and socially acceptable ways. When other observers fail to react, individuals
often take this as a signal that a response is not needed or not appropriate.
In the video, when Crystal’s bag was snatched right in front of so many people, the
onlookers did not give her help. Because there are other observers, individuals do not feel as
much pressure to take action, since the responsibility to take action is thought to be shared
among all of those present. The girls were worried for Crystal but as there were many people at
the scene, they did not take action because they thought the guys will help her. Some even
started recording the whole incident. The two male observers were seen wanting to help
Crystal, but as they saw the snatch thief was armed, they instantly backed away. Bystanders go
through a five-step process, during each of which they can decide to do nothing. First, they
notice the event (Crystal’s handbag is snatched). Then, they realize the emergency (Crystal’s call
for help and her distress ). Next, they start to assume responsibility (or assume that others will
help her). They then know what to do (or not) and act. In this case, they did not take any action
to help Crystal. In the end, the onlookers just observed the whole incident without offering help
to Crystal.
16. 5. Displaced Aggression
The term aggression refers to a range of behaviours that can result in both physical and
psychological harm to oneself, other or objects in the environment. This type of social
interaction focuses on harming another person, either physically or mentally. For this case,
Crystal experienced displaced aggression. Displaced aggression can occur when someone
cannot show aggression towards the source of incitement or provocation, so instead takes it
out on something else and behaves aggressively towards another individual that had nothing to
do with the initial conflict.
Displaced aggression is shown when Crystal takes out her frustration of not getting the
job, and getting her handbag snatched towards an innocent target, her mother. She was feeling
very frustrated and her mother provoked her by asking her how she was. Crystal then showed
aggression by slapping her mother’s hand away and then started yelling at her. With everything
that has happened to her, bag got snatched and got rejected of job offer, she had nowhere to
direct her anger and frustration. Her mother became her target to direct her anger even though
her mother was not at fault.
