State of the Map Asia (SotM-Asia) is the annual regional conference of OpenStreetMap (OSM) organized by OSM communities in Asia. First SotM-Asia was organized in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2015, and the second was organized in Manila, Philippines in 2016. This year’s conference, third in the series, was organized in Kathmandu, Nepal on September 23 – 24, 2017 at Park Village Resort, Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu, Nepal. We brought nearly 200 Open Mapping enthusiasts from Asia and beyond to this year’s SotM-Asia. The event provided an opportunity to share knowledge and experience among mappers; expand their network; and generate ideas to expand map coverage and effective use of OSM data in Asian continent. We chose ‘from creation to use of OSM data’ as the theme of this year’s conference, emphasizing on the effective use of OSM data. We also brought together a government panel from four different countries in this year’s SotM-Asia. We believe this event will deepen the bond and enhance collaboration among OSM communities across Asia. More information about the conference can be found on: http://stateofthemap.asia.

Τhe development in the fields of Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH) management and Maritime Archaeology, yields an interdisciplinary and creative academic framework, such as the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector that has been proved to build intelligent systems and applications. However, the ways to fully make use of these technologies are still being explored, as their potential have not been exploited yet. Underwater archaeological sites, semi (/or fully) submerged settlements, ancient ports and shipwrecks, unlike land sites, are not accessible to public due to their special (sub) marine environment and depth. In this paper, an innovative research idea of using Augmented Reality (AR) for maintaining the memory and the information of underwater archaeological sites, is presented. Although the “artificial” visual documentation cannot replace the authentic values of the underwater tangible heritage, the AR technology can contribute to the protection of the intangible properties and the conquered knowledge of the past of a place. This research work will focus, among other case studies, on the (semi) submerged fortifications and their contiguous contents of the acropolis of Halai in east Lokris, Greece. Hence, along with the climate change that may lead more antiquities covered by water during the following years, the advances in the communication field and the up-coming 5G and cloud technologies will make the idea fully applicable, contributing to the enhancement of the coastal and the underwater archaeological remains.

Methods of survey have developed dramatically in the recent past with the advent of new digital survey techniques, global positioning airborne and terrestrial laser scanning. The volume of data collected to record monuments and landscapes may now be vast, and levels of accuracy and precision unprecedented. This growth in data quality and volume has to some extent been accompanied by a reluctant theoretical debate, largely about method and meaning in the practice of survey. Less well explored is the area of visualisation of survey results, which has tended to remain rooted in traditional approaches, albeit facilitated by new digital media. The ability of modern digital survey to engage with others areas of archaeological debate, for example discussions of sense of place, meaning and interpretation in landscape, as embodied by for example the phenomenological approach to landscape has largely been ignored as it is poorly addressed using conventional static visualisation techniques. This paper explores the potential of computer game software to produce accurate, immersive and interactive visualisations of digital survey data of archaeological monuments.

The long-term objective of our project is to discover the fundamental principles underlying the collaborative production, sharing, and management of route information by travelers with visual impairments. The specific research hypothesis is two-fold: 1) people with varied levels of vision loss and orientation and mobility (O&M) skills will be able to form online social networks that collaboratively manage large route information collections for different geographic areas, and 2) members of such networks will be able to successfully travel through a variety of previously unknown indoor and outdoor environments of varied complexity when provided with online verbal route directions referencing landmarks and path integration information salient to their particular vision and skill level. In this paper, we report on the initial stage of our project: an online survey whose objectives are to collect samples of route descriptions from travelers with visual impairments and to do the initial profiling of the target population. The data collected so far provide valuable insights into what travelers with visual impairments need to know about their environments in order to travel independently and how they may communicate that information to their fellow travelers in the future.

Speed has become a way of life. We are asymptotically piling data. Speed can be achieved with new design processes, techniques, and Technology. Innovations AR and VR are just some of the many forms of technologies that will play a key role in shaping the Architecture and Planning of tomorrow, making it future-ready and ushering in a new age of innovation. AR and VR in Architecture & Planning were introduced as assisting tools and has helped generate multiple design options, expanded possibilities of visualization, and provided us with more enhanced, detailed, and specific experience in real-time; enabling us to see the resultsof work on hand well before the commencement of the project. These tools are further developed for city development decisions, helping citizens interact with local authorities, access public services, and plan their commute. After reviewing multiple research papers, it had been observed that each one is moving forward with the changes brought by it, without entirely understanding its role. This paper provides a summary of theappliance of AR & VR in architecture and planning.

An urban transportation system is crucial to a city's overall development. Having an effective transportation system is crucial to raising the standard of living in urban areas. Effective utilization is crucial due to the transportation network's enormous development costs. Reaching optimal utilization necessitates appropriate connectivity and orientation. Urbanization has led to massive population growth and related activities in many developing countries. Inadequate transportation options and associated travel problems are the result of this. Therefore, developing ways to increase the transport network's efficiency requires a parameter-based evaluation of the network. It involves determining the variables that affect travel as well as the instruments and methods for defining urban features including the land use and transportation system. Research gaps are determined using the literature review as a guide. By recognizing the influences of land use on networks, networks on land use, networks on travel, and once again, networks on travel, the current study offers a paradigm for developing urban transportation networks. Information about land use, zonal boundaries, and the road network was gathered from the appropriate organizations. GIS was used to convert these to digital format.

This type of collective data can give powerful indications that are affecting the urban systems design and development. In this study mobile phone data during Armada event is investigated. Analyzing mobile phone traces gives conceptual views about individuals densities and their mobility patterns in the urban city. The geo-visualization and statistical techniques have been used for understanding human mobility collectively and individually. The undertaken substantial parameters are inter-event times, travel distances (displacements) and radius of gyration. They have been analyzed and simulated using computing platform by integrating various applications for huge database management, visualization, analysis, and simulation. Accordingly, the general population pattern law has been extracted. The study contribution outcomes have revealed both the individuals densities in static perspective and individuals mobility in dynamic perspective with multi levels of abstraction (macroscopic, mesoscopic, microscopic).

The work presented in this article continues our investigation of such assisted navigation solutions where the main emphasis is placed not on sensor sets or sensor fusion algorithms but on the ability of the travelers to interpret and contextualize verbal route directions en route. This work contributes to our investigation of the research hypothesis that we have formulated and partially validated in our previous studies: if a route is verbally described in sufficient and appropriate amount of detail, independent VI travelers can use their O&M and problem solving skills to successfully follow the route without any wearable sensors or sensors embedded in the environment. In this investigation, we temporarily put aside the issue of how VI and blind travelers successfully interpret route directions en route and tackle the question of how those route directions can be created, generated, and maintained by online communities. In particular, we focus on the automation of path inference and present an algorithm that may be used as part of the background computation of VGI sites to find new paths in the previous route directions written by online community members, generate new route descriptions from them, and post them for subsequent community editing.
