WHAT IS AN
ECOSYSTEM
2
3
ECOSYSTEM
• Includes all of the living things
(plants and animals and
organisms) in a given area ,
interacting with each other and
with non-living environments
(weather, sun, earth, soil,
climate and atmosphere).
• Foundations of the Biosphere
that determine the health of
the entire Earth System.

INTERACTIONS
IN AN
ECOSYSTEM
8
COMPETITION
• Competition is the interaction
between and among organisms,
where each competes with one
another to obtain the same
resources.
• Competition occurs among
individuals of the same species.
9
PREDATION
• Predation is the interaction among
consumers wherein one consumer
serves as the food of another.
• The predator is the organism that
kills and eats its victim.
• The organism that is eaten is the
prey.
10
SYMBIOSIS
• Symbiosis refers to the living
together of two or more organisms
in an ecosystem over a long period
of time.
• Generally refers to any of the three
identified interactions of organisms:
1.Mutualism
2.Parasitism
3.Commensalism
11
TYPES OF SYMBIOSIS
• Two-way relationship
wherein both
organisms benefit from
each other.
12
• Is an antagonistic
relationship wherein
one organism benefits
(parasite) but the
other is injured.
• Is a one-sided
relationship wherein
one organism benefits
and the other
organism is neither
injured nor benefited.
MUTUALISM COMMENSALISMPARASITISM
BIOMES
13
BIOMES
• Biomes are globally similar areas,
including ecosystems, as regards
combinations of plants, animals, soil
organisms and climatic conditions.
They have certain common factors,
e.g. plant structures (trees, shrubs,
grasses), leaf types (broadleaf,
needles), plant spacing (forest,
woodland, savanna) and climate.
• The basic types of biomes are: land,
freshwater and marine biomes.
14
15
BIOMES
• Certain plants grow in certain
climates and thus create the biomes
– vegetation types extending over a
large geographic area. So climate
affects the creation of biomes
strongly. The following chart shows
the relationship between the biome
type and the climate.
