Key Themes In Finding Forrester By Mike Rich
"Don't Judge a book by its cover," is an overused clichГ© used in the film Finding Forrester, by
writer Mike Rich. Rich exhibits this theme in an analytical matter using conflict like Man vs.
Man and Man vs. self in various ways. Mike uses several other key subjects like race, stereotypes,
and friendship throughout the film that all are developed through conflict. In the film Finding
Forrester, there are two major conflicts that take place between Jamal and Mr. Crawford, and
Jamal and William Forrester that lead to the development of the several key themes that are
presented in this film. From the very start, Jamal's new teacher Mr. Crawford and him do not get
along. Mr. Crawford does not think Jamal is capable of being...show more content...
From the very start when Mr. Forrester laid his eyes on Jamal through the window he thought Jamal
was a stereotypical black guy from the ghetto that had nothing to offer. One–day Jamal got dared to
go up the fire escape and steal something from Mr. Forrester by his friends; Mr. Forrester woke up
and Jamal got so scared and ran out leaving his bookbag and all his journals there. Mr. Forrester
being the famous writer he is, read them and edited them for Jamal. From that point on Mr.
Forrester's opinion on Jamal changed greatly. The subject of friendship comes into play. They come
from opposite worlds but through their passion for writing and literature, Jamal and Forrester build
an incredible friendship that evolved from mentorship. Throughout Finding Forrester Jamal has
helped Forrester overcome the death of his brother and come out of his apartment while Forrester
has helped Jamal find his "writer's voice" and expand his writing to the unknown. Through the
intricacies of Jamal and Forrester's relationship Van Sant shows that in many poverty–stricken
situations, those that try to assist and care for the less fortunate often come out the most helped and
improved. In this film, their friendship is key to the success of the overall theme. There are many
conflicts that exemplify man versus man but the most captivating conflict in the film is man versus
himself and in

Identity And True Identity In 'Finding Forrester'
An identity of an individual may not conveyed to everyone in society, and they may possess
unexpected qualities and skills. Throughout Finding Forrester, Jamal, the main character from the
Bronx, meets a man who turns out to be William Forrester; a famous author. Jamal is intrigued to
writing and is a skilled writer, enough to get him transferred from the public school to a private
school. Jamal frequently visits William at his apartment that he never leaves to discusses literature
and write papers. In the visits, Jamal and William discover each other's true identities through their
writings. JamalВґs professor accuses him of plagiarism for using writing from Forrester, but is
saved by William when he says he had permission to use his work. This moment shows the
relationship they built by showing their true identity to each other. In the movie, Finding Forrester, a
message displayed is that identity can be revealed through stereotypical based conflicts, and by
individuals stereotyping another without further knowledge of their background. Conflict arise due
to stereotypes of individuals which leads to the revealing of their identity. During class, Jamal blurts
out the author of a quote that Professor Crawford states, and Crawford does not like JamalВґs
remark. Next, Professor Crawford attempts to embarrass Jamal by naming more quotes, believing
Jamal does not know the authors. Jamal answers back by naming the author of every quote. The
stereotyping of Jamal to be an uneducated writer creates the conflict between Jamal and Professor
Crawford and reveals JamalВґs identity of being intelligent in literature. According to Holden
(2000), ВЁHis envious professor sets out to destroy himВЁ (p. 3). Professor Crawford did not know
about Jamal's knowledge of literature, but he presumes it to not be advanced. When Jamal proves
him wrong by naming the authors of the quotes, JamalВґs identity is revealed to Professor Crawford
and the class. They now realize more about Jamal and his skills because of the conflict with
Professor Crawford. Another instance happens when Jamal approaches the man driving a Mercedes
Benz. The man talks in a tone that shows he believes he is better than Jamal and explains how nice
his car really is. He

Jamal is Innocent In the movie, Finding Forrester, Jamal meets a man by the name of William
Forrester. By the fault of Jamal, Forrester acquires Jamal's journal which were full of his writing.
Forrester, a renowned author, corrected Jamal's work by adding his own thoughts. After Jamal's
journals were returned to him, he began working on his writing with Forrester. At the same time, he
was offered the opportunity to play basketball at a private school. No one at the school believed
Jamal had any academic capabilities; they only believed he was there to play basketball. One of his
teachers even went as far as to accuse Jamal of plagiarism. However, Jamal Wallace is innocent of
plagiarism because he demonstrates a high level of...show more content...
On reason why Jamal is innocent is because he demonstrated integrity by not giving away William
Forrester's identity. Someone who demonstrates that level of integrity and does not sacrifice
another to save himself is one who would not cheat in school. Additionally, everyone at the
private school was unfair to him. No one believed that he was there for anything other than
basketball, so they didn't take him seriously as a student. He is also innocent because of his
intelligence. He has a very good vocabulary from reading a lot of books and he likes to write.
Overall, one can see that Jamal Wallace is a well–rounded student who does not need to plagiarize his

Finding Forrester Symbolism
Continuing on, the lighting in the movie, Finding Forrester, emphasises how William Forrester
has been living and feeling since the death of his brother. The scenes created in Forrester's
apartment remain, for the most part, in the dark. The darkness expresses that deeper, unsaid
emotion Forrester is holding on to. Consequently, it gives Forrester a new attitude when he is by
himself versus when Jamal is there. One night, Jamal takes Forrester to a basketball game, trying to
pull Forrester away of his apartment allowing him to enjoy the activities he once did when he was
younger. The night consisted of streetlights and stars when Forrester continually asks if it is light
outside before they leave, and when he does walk out, he wears a hat and

Finding Forrester: A Method Analysis
When I write about anything I usually just write until I can't write anymore I like to use the
method used in Finding Forrester. When I write its probably about something that I know enough
about, to do so, my organization comes from how I present my ideas. brainstorming is a big part
of how I want to set up my paper and or assignment. I like to write about things I find passion in
for example the failed war on drugs and the over surveillance perpetuated by our own government
and of course the down trodden individuals that need our help. If I were write a paper on those
particular subjects I would first set up a model in my mind; and start off with a philosophical
approach on the government's various method's of prying into the common mans

Finding Forrester Courage
"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it" – Nelson Mandela. In the
film Finding Forrester by Gus Van Sant an older white author, named William Forrester, who
stripped himself from the world begins to become acquainted with a black teen, Jamal Wallace.
They quickly use each other to find inner courage and achieve goals they never believed would
happen. Forrester becomes Jamal's tutor and helps him through plagiarism allegations and Jamal
becomes Forresters seeming therapist. Forrester is brought back into the real world to live a greater
life and Jamal works to pursue his academic and basketball goals. They do these things through the
courage the begin to obtain from one another. Finding Forrester shows that...show more content...
When at Madison Square garden, going to the basketball game, Jamal and Forrester accidentally
separate in a huge crowd of people and Forrester has an anxiety attack since he does not know
how to live a life outside of his house. Forrester leaving his house in the first place, takes a lot of
courage since he does not know what was going to happen. It is a challenge for him then to be all
alone instead of with Jamal. His courage was tough to build up, as Jamal found, but eventually he
gains the courage to hop back into the real world. According to Movielocity (2001), "Compelled to
look past skin color and suppositions, Jamal encounters not only his first fan, but a mentor who will
challenge and change him forever, and Forrester has his first reason in years to emerge from his
self–imposed solitude" (p.1). Despite their extreme differences, Jamal and Forrester exchange
courage in different ways, they challenge each other to go outside of their box. These men have to
challenge one another harshly in order to push the courage out of eachother. They are scared of the
consequences, but eventually gain the courage. This matters because them being together rises the
level of courage that they have, despite how hard it is. Forrester is scared of the world and Jamal is
scared of falling into the stereotypical student athlete. At the state basketball tournament Jamal is
told by an administrator of his school that if

Finding Friendship in the Film Finding Forrester
In Finding Forrester a movie that takes place in the Bronx, there are two main characters, William
Forrester and Jamal Wallace who find friendship in an unlikely way because of their passion for
reading and writing. Though both are very different from each other they are drawn together by
similar interests.
The characters are different in many ways; Forrester is a male Caucasian in his mid seventies who
graduated from Columbia University and lives by himself. Forrester has confined himself to his
apartment for ten years. His only foray to the outside world is when he leans out the window to
clean off the grime. Forrester pays for all other necessities that are handled by outside...show more

On the other hand, Jamal is a sixteen–year old African American male who went to a private school
on a scholarship and lives with his mother and brother. Unlike Forrester, he enjoys going outside,
interacting with his friends from school and going to basketball games. Another difference between
the Jamal and Forrester is his confrontational attitude. When harassed by another student from school
on the basketball court, he handled the problem in his own way, proving his ability to do as well as
the next person, which gained the respect from the coach and the other students.
Forrester and Jamal may have a lot of differences but they also have many things in common.
Forrester's passion for reading is reflected by the number of books lining his walls and stacked on
the floor of his apartment. Jamal's ability to recites passages from many of the books he has read
indicates the pleasure he takes in reading. Another similarity is Forrester's enjoyment in writing. He
published a book and an article plus he has a file cabinet filled with other books and articles he
wrote but never published. Jamal takes pleasure in jotting down information, thoughts and daily
events in books that he carries at all times in his book bag. This gift of expressing himself in writing
enabled him to obtain a scholarship to a private school. Both characters take pleasure in sports.
Before his hibernation, Forrester always traveled to Yankee stadium with

1. Jamal refused to recite the poem and say he has not read it because; he did not want his friends to
make fun of him.
2. Jamal turned to reading and writing after his father abandoned his family because, he knew that
learning things to make him smarter will help him become a better person when older, so he would
not do something like this which his father did.
3. When Jamal finds his backpack in the street he discovers comment in red ink in his journals.
Forrester had read his journals and made editorial notes in them.
4. When Forrester says "constipated thinking" about Jamal's writings he is criticizing his work,
saying it is not clear.

9. Jamal and Forrester have both a teacher–student relationship and a friend–friend relationship. They
have a teacher–student relationship in how Forrester helps Jamal become better at writing by
correcting his work and helping it sound better. They have a friend–friend relationship when
Forrester in the end admits that he gave Jamal permission to use his writings, so that Jamal would
not be accused of plagiarism.
10. I think that both Jamal and Forrester are teachers to each other in the film. Jamal learns that he
is a very smart guy and with some guidance from Forrester he can be a very intelligent writer.
Forrester learns from Jamal that the past may have been upsetting and feeling full of blame, but you
cannot let it affect today and he admires Forrester and respects him, and no one comes from a past
that had no sadness. From being around each other they received a sense of respect and admiration
at an intellectual level.
11. Forrest warns Jamal about bitterly disappointed teachers, like Robert Crawford, because some
people like these teachers only see and believe what they think is right, and since Jamal came
from where he did with a background like he has, there will be criticism and disbelief over his work,
but Jamal is to stand by what he writes and feel proud over it.
12. Jamal takes Forrester to a stadium on his birthday because he wanted him to remind him of his

William Forrester (Sean Connery), a famous author who turns out being a hermit states, ВЁyou must
write your first draft with your heart. You rewrite with your head. The first key to writing is... to
write, not to think" (Finding Forrester (2000)). A powerful quote to that accurately depicts the
powerful storyline of 2000 drama film, Finding Forrester. Set in modern–day New York City, Jamal
Wallace (Rob Brown), a sixteen–year–old child genius is faced with the challenge of choosing
academics or playing basketball at his remedial school in the Bronx. Jamal internal conflict is

He made his basketball friends from the hood believe he was still one of them, but also interact
with his teachers and students in an intellectual way, that makes him seem genuine yet brilliant. If I
had to critique one character it would be Claire Spence, Jamal's love interest, played by Anna
Paquin. The direction and dialogue she was given were vague and not intriguing. The audience was
left wanting more and there were many plot holes in their relationship that were not fulfilled by the
end of the film. Paquin did what she could with the character and certainly left us wanting to see
more which I did appreciate, I am upset with the direction team for not focusing more on her.
Equally important, the conflict of Finding Forrester added a deeper meaning and interest to the
already beautifully directed characters. The boys from the Bronx are aroused by the man (Forrester)
that watches them from his high–rise window. Jamal sneaks into his home but loses his backpack
while escaping. Jamal wants to write better so he works with Mr. Forrester daily to impress his
teachers. Although, Mr. Forrester is very secretive about his past. Jamal must decide whether he
wants a life with his street friends or a rich and lavish one. His friends embarrass him for having a
crush on a Caucasian girl, Claire. The last major conflict of Finding Forrester is that Jamal's
teachers are questioning if he plagiarized his works because the writing sounds like

"You must write your first draft with your heart. You rewrite with your head." Quoted by Sean
Connery. In the movie, Finding Forrester, a 16 year old boy named Jamal Wallace and his friends
play out on a basketball court while there is a creepy guy always looking out the window they call
him "The Window". Jamals friends dare him to trespass into "The Windows" apartment and take
something so they know Jamal actually went in the apartment. When Jamal climbed the fire escape
and got into the apartment, "The Window" scared Jamal and he left his bookbag. Later on, Jamal
gets his bag back and starts to go over to the apartment more often. They get close personally and
form a strong friendship. In Finding Forrester, when going through tough times friendships should
matter; since, friends will always be there to help and support with every action that is made.
When people have friendships it shows who they are because of what could be done for others:
therefore, taking time out of the day to care for the person or people. Before Jamal got to know
"The Window" he thought bad about him. Eventually he found out his name is actually William

to know Jamal as a person and not just as someone that broke into his apartment. They started to

Finding Forrester Character Analysis
When I first found out that we had to find similarities between ourselves and a character in
Finding Forrester, I thought that it was going to be impossible. However, I realized that I had been
thinking way too hard about finding something to write about. Not every life changing decision,
experience or opportunity must be huge, although the end result most likely ends up to be. My
middle school self made the decision to choose volleyball over the other sports that I had also been
playing. Making that decision has opened up many doors for me, although I didn't know what would
come of it at the time. In order to be successful people often have to dare to make their dreams
become a reality and have someone motivational along the way. I have always...show more content...
My parents always have my back when it comes to anything that I am trying to pursue. At one point
I considered going to college on the East coast, and although I know that they would have
absolutely hated that, they were willing to let me visit schools to see if that was where I wanted my
college experience to be. After I decided that going so far away from home would not work for
me, they helped me to find a college closer to home where I would receive an excellent education
and play volleyball. They helped me through the recruiting process, which causes a lot more stress
and takes up more time than I ever imagined. There were weeks when I would receive emails
upon emails from coaches and weeks where there would be none. That could be very discouraging
at times, but they always said the right things to keep me feeling confident in myself. In Finding
Forrester, William constantly pushed Jamal to become a better writer. He would yell at Jamal to
pound the keys and write without thinking in a tone that seemed a bit harsh.. So even though it may
have seemed like William was tearing Jamal down at times, we know that he just wanted to get the
best out of him. I compare my parents' support to William helping Jamal become a more superior
writer because our encounters influenced both of us

Analysis Of The Film Finding Forrester
The film Finding Forrester is an excellent example of a literacy narrative. A literary narrative is a
piece of text that tells a story about reading and/or writing. A story includes plot, setting, conflict, and
resolution. The film Finding Forrester includes all of these elements of a literacy narrative. The
author, Mike Rich, made a connection between the two main characters, Jamal and William, through
writing. The three main characters that made an impression in the film are Jamal Wallace,
William Forrester, and Professor Robert Crawford. Jamal Wallace is the protagonist of the story,
he was the brave one of his friends who went up to explore "The Window". Later in the story, the
audience finds out that William Forrester is "The Window"; He is the person that lives in the
mysterious apartment. William then teaches Jamal how to write and helps him throughout his
writing process. Professor Robert Crawford is Jamal's English professor at Mailor. Professor
Crawford was very skeptical of Jamal and his writings. The film has many different settings
throughout New York; the apartment is in the Bronx but Jamal's private school, Mailor, is in
Manhattan. These two settings are important because one shows how Jamal grew up with a
rough life in the Bronx and then what he is expected to live up to in Manhattan. Dialogue is the
key aspect of stories and films, without it there is no meaning. Toward the end of the story Jamal
finds out that William has passed away of cancer and left Jamal a note. Jamal opens the letter
from William that reads, "Dear Jamal, Someone I once knew wrote that we walk away from our
dreams afraid that we may fail or worse yet, afraid we may succeed. This quote is the most
important dialogue in the story; it summarizes the whole film. Throughout the film, William ran
away from Jamal, he did not want to read his papers and help him because he did not want to
bring out his own writing dreams again. Then, William finally gave in and helped Jamal; William
started realizing that there is much more to the world than his little apartment. William taught Jamal
how to write, and Jamal showed William the world. If I were to write about a scene, I would pick
the scene where Jamal first enters William's

Conflict In Finding Forrester
In "Finding Forrester," there are so many people that kept pulling Jamal Wallace down because of
his skin color and because he was not rich like the kids at his school. The life of Jamal Wallace
was filled with many conflicts in the movie "Finding Forrester" because he struggled with people
constantly pulling him down in his daily life. Jamal was always nervous in the movie so whenever
he was sitting, standing, in the house, or walking down the street he always had a basketball with him
bouncing it.
John Hartwell always brought Jamal down at basketball practice because John thought that he was
better than Jamal because he had more money then Jamal did. John was just a stuck up kid that
thought he was better than anybody on the basketball court. Hartwell was the well known black kid
on the basketball team until Jamal joined the team. After Jamal joined the team everybody thought
that Jamal was so good and John was not getting as much attention as he did. During one of the

William knew from the start that Jamal could write a book or essay straight from his mind. In the

what he wanted. "We walk away from our dreams afraid we may fail or worse yet afraid we may
succeed." William told Jamal that if he keeps practicing on writing then he'll become a better writer.
Towards the end of the movie William went to Jamal's school and read an essay that Jamal wrote in
front of a couple people from the school board and in front of all his classmates and his teacher, after
he read it everybody applauded Jamal for the good work that he did. "Why is it the words we write

Finding Forrester: An Analysis
Introduction
Finding Forrester is one of the best movies to come out during its time. It was focused on the
story of boy who is looking for a role model and finding it in the most unexpected place and the
most unexpected person. The movie tells about the journey not just of Jamal Wallace but also of
the journey of William Forrester especially during the last few years of his life. It was a story that
presented life in its beginning and its ending and how the two are intertwined. Wallace's life was
just beginning while Forrester's was ending. Somehow, they bumped into each other and stood side
by side during a particular time wherein the crossroads they both have to face on their own seem to

The movie was dependent on the story line itself and not on visual effects. The story is about an
individual's experience bereft of any sci–fi or hard action scenes that did not necessitate the need for
more complex and demanding art direction. Posters and other teasers released for the film often
comes in the warm colors of brown, yellow and something akin to sepia tone which is very warm
and compliments the warmth on the face and character of Sean Connery. The art direction also settled
for easily readable typography. Photography captured the softness in the physical characteristics of
Connery and Brown and transforms it as visual cue for the audience to lead them towards feeling the
unexpected emotional bond that these two men will share in the story.
Acting
As one of Sean Connery's dramatic movies that earned many positive remarks from critics, Finding
Forrester can be judged acting–wise as a movie that reflects the emotional acting style of both
Connery and Brown. As usual, Connery brings to the table his father–like demeanor that enhanced
his acting, while Brown was effective in playing the student who looks for an idol to look up to, and
finding it in Connery's character in the movie. Connery was effective in acting out the recluse,
solitary literary genius and was able to communicate to the audience through his acting the changes
in his emotional state but not allowing the audience to guess into the future of the

their relationship grows stronger and stronger. In Finding Forrester, one can see that trust is the key

In this article, Berardinelli believe that Claire was a great person for Jamal, although he believes
she was underused. As new conflicts unfold in the story of Finding Forrester, many of them are

Forrester's Use Of Courage In Finding Forrester
"Someone I once knew wrote that we walk away from our dreams, afraid that we may fail or
worse yet, afraid we may succeed" This is a quote from William Forrester in the movie, Finding
Forrester. The quote is saying that one does not conquer their dreams without courage. The movie,
Finding Forrester, is set in the busy city of New York City. Here lives the teenage boy, Jamal
Wallace, and an unlikely mentor named William Forrester. Jamal breaks into Mr. Forrester's
apartment, and he leaves his backpack there. When he goes back to retrieve it the next day, writings
in his bag has been revised. This sets up the relationship between Jamal and Mr. Forrester writing

For example, when Jamal was shooting free throws to win the championship game, he purposely
missed them. Jamal knew that the school was just using his basketball skills as a way to win
their basketball dreams. In that second, Jamal used the opportunity of it being the championship
game, to courageously miss the free throws, and prove a point to his school. Berardinelli (2000)
stated "Jamal encourages Forrester to shake off his fear of the outside world. It is a time honored
formula that, when handled properly, can be effective and affecting." (p.2). This example
explains that Jamal was trying to help Forrester break out of his shell and be more social. Jamal
helps him realize the opportunities he has now at his age to be courageous. Another example is
when Professor Crawford was harassing a student by making him stand up and asking him
humiliating questions. Jamal then gets called on and replies back to Professor Crawford with
questions that make Crawford appear unintelligent. Jamal used the opportunity of being in front of
the class to finally stand up to Crawford and to help a classmate. This took courage because
Professor Crawford controls Jamal's grade and he never really like Jamal. Also, Jamal seeks help
from Forrester throughout the majority of the movie, which encourages Jamal to break Forrester's
shyness (Levy, 2000, p.3). This example shows that the unknowingness of Forrester's house gave
him the opportunity to crack Forrester's shell. This is courageous because Forrester was a complete
stranger and they did not know each other. Therefore, individuals use unknown places as an
opportunity to be

James has no idea that the apartment he has entered belonged to that of William Forrester played by
world renowned Sean Connery. Connery does an unbelievably remarkable job of bringing this
character to life. William Forrester is one of the greatest authors of his time. Writing and
publishing only one book, but this book was of such greatness it left his audience wanting more.
A rumor of an additional book had surfaced but Forrester but fell off the face of the earth. Going
into a reclusive hiding for no one to ever see or hear from him again. (Finding Forrester 2000) As
any curious individual would, Forrester goes through this young man's backpack. Presumably in
an attempt to seek further knowledge of who this child was. Forrester surprisingly finds that
James is an exceptionally gifted writer. Several days later as James is shooting hoops alone on
the court, his backpack falls out of thin air right before his eyes. Upon further examination, James
finds that Forrester had written words of encouragement, and made minor corrections to his
writing. James learns a life lesson when he has to go apologize to Forrester and is utterly shocked
when Forrester does not receive his apology with a kindred heart. Just as James his about to walk
away, Forrester cracks the door open and James asks if he can continue helping him improve his
writing. (Finding Forrester

Finding Forrester Essay

  • 1. Key Themes In Finding Forrester By Mike Rich "Don't Judge a book by its cover," is an overused clichГ© used in the film Finding Forrester, by writer Mike Rich. Rich exhibits this theme in an analytical matter using conflict like Man vs. Man and Man vs. self in various ways. Mike uses several other key subjects like race, stereotypes, and friendship throughout the film that all are developed through conflict. In the film Finding Forrester, there are two major conflicts that take place between Jamal and Mr. Crawford, and Jamal and William Forrester that lead to the development of the several key themes that are presented in this film. From the very start, Jamal's new teacher Mr. Crawford and him do not get along. Mr. Crawford does not think Jamal is capable of being...show more content... From the very start when Mr. Forrester laid his eyes on Jamal through the window he thought Jamal was a stereotypical black guy from the ghetto that had nothing to offer. One–day Jamal got dared to go up the fire escape and steal something from Mr. Forrester by his friends; Mr. Forrester woke up and Jamal got so scared and ran out leaving his bookbag and all his journals there. Mr. Forrester being the famous writer he is, read them and edited them for Jamal. From that point on Mr. Forrester's opinion on Jamal changed greatly. The subject of friendship comes into play. They come from opposite worlds but through their passion for writing and literature, Jamal and Forrester build an incredible friendship that evolved from mentorship. Throughout Finding Forrester Jamal has helped Forrester overcome the death of his brother and come out of his apartment while Forrester has helped Jamal find his "writer's voice" and expand his writing to the unknown. Through the intricacies of Jamal and Forrester's relationship Van Sant shows that in many poverty–stricken situations, those that try to assist and care for the less fortunate often come out the most helped and improved. In this film, their friendship is key to the success of the overall theme. There are many conflicts that exemplify man versus man but the most captivating conflict in the film is man versus himself and in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Identity And True Identity In 'Finding Forrester' An identity of an individual may not conveyed to everyone in society, and they may possess unexpected qualities and skills. Throughout Finding Forrester, Jamal, the main character from the Bronx, meets a man who turns out to be William Forrester; a famous author. Jamal is intrigued to writing and is a skilled writer, enough to get him transferred from the public school to a private school. Jamal frequently visits William at his apartment that he never leaves to discusses literature and write papers. In the visits, Jamal and William discover each other's true identities through their writings. JamalВґs professor accuses him of plagiarism for using writing from Forrester, but is saved by William when he says he had permission to use his work. This moment shows the relationship they built by showing their true identity to each other. In the movie, Finding Forrester, a message displayed is that identity can be revealed through stereotypical based conflicts, and by individuals stereotyping another without further knowledge of their background. Conflict arise due to stereotypes of individuals which leads to the revealing of their identity. During class, Jamal blurts out the author of a quote that Professor Crawford states, and Crawford does not like JamalВґs remark. Next, Professor Crawford attempts to embarrass Jamal by naming more quotes, believing Jamal does not know the authors. Jamal answers back by naming the author of every quote. The stereotyping of Jamal to be an uneducated writer creates the conflict between Jamal and Professor Crawford and reveals JamalВґs identity of being intelligent in literature. According to Holden (2000), ВЁHis envious professor sets out to destroy himВЁ (p. 3). Professor Crawford did not know about Jamal's knowledge of literature, but he presumes it to not be advanced. When Jamal proves him wrong by naming the authors of the quotes, JamalВґs identity is revealed to Professor Crawford and the class. They now realize more about Jamal and his skills because of the conflict with Professor Crawford. Another instance happens when Jamal approaches the man driving a Mercedes Benz. The man talks in a tone that shows he believes he is better than Jamal and explains how nice his car really is. He Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Finding Forrester Jamal is Innocent In the movie, Finding Forrester, Jamal meets a man by the name of William Forrester. By the fault of Jamal, Forrester acquires Jamal's journal which were full of his writing. Forrester, a renowned author, corrected Jamal's work by adding his own thoughts. After Jamal's journals were returned to him, he began working on his writing with Forrester. At the same time, he was offered the opportunity to play basketball at a private school. No one at the school believed Jamal had any academic capabilities; they only believed he was there to play basketball. One of his teachers even went as far as to accuse Jamal of plagiarism. However, Jamal Wallace is innocent of plagiarism because he demonstrates a high level of...show more content... On reason why Jamal is innocent is because he demonstrated integrity by not giving away William Forrester's identity. Someone who demonstrates that level of integrity and does not sacrifice another to save himself is one who would not cheat in school. Additionally, everyone at the private school was unfair to him. No one believed that he was there for anything other than basketball, so they didn't take him seriously as a student. He is also innocent because of his intelligence. He has a very good vocabulary from reading a lot of books and he likes to write. Overall, one can see that Jamal Wallace is a well–rounded student who does not need to plagiarize his Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Finding Forrester Symbolism Continuing on, the lighting in the movie, Finding Forrester, emphasises how William Forrester has been living and feeling since the death of his brother. The scenes created in Forrester's apartment remain, for the most part, in the dark. The darkness expresses that deeper, unsaid emotion Forrester is holding on to. Consequently, it gives Forrester a new attitude when he is by himself versus when Jamal is there. One night, Jamal takes Forrester to a basketball game, trying to pull Forrester away of his apartment allowing him to enjoy the activities he once did when he was younger. The night consisted of streetlights and stars when Forrester continually asks if it is light outside before they leave, and when he does walk out, he wears a hat and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Finding Forrester: A Method Analysis When I write about anything I usually just write until I can't write anymore I like to use the method used in Finding Forrester. When I write its probably about something that I know enough about, to do so, my organization comes from how I present my ideas. brainstorming is a big part of how I want to set up my paper and or assignment. I like to write about things I find passion in for example the failed war on drugs and the over surveillance perpetuated by our own government and of course the down trodden individuals that need our help. If I were write a paper on those particular subjects I would first set up a model in my mind; and start off with a philosophical approach on the government's various method's of prying into the common mans Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Finding Forrester Courage "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it" – Nelson Mandela. In the film Finding Forrester by Gus Van Sant an older white author, named William Forrester, who stripped himself from the world begins to become acquainted with a black teen, Jamal Wallace. They quickly use each other to find inner courage and achieve goals they never believed would happen. Forrester becomes Jamal's tutor and helps him through plagiarism allegations and Jamal becomes Forresters seeming therapist. Forrester is brought back into the real world to live a greater life and Jamal works to pursue his academic and basketball goals. They do these things through the courage the begin to obtain from one another. Finding Forrester shows that...show more content... When at Madison Square garden, going to the basketball game, Jamal and Forrester accidentally separate in a huge crowd of people and Forrester has an anxiety attack since he does not know how to live a life outside of his house. Forrester leaving his house in the first place, takes a lot of courage since he does not know what was going to happen. It is a challenge for him then to be all alone instead of with Jamal. His courage was tough to build up, as Jamal found, but eventually he gains the courage to hop back into the real world. According to Movielocity (2001), "Compelled to look past skin color and suppositions, Jamal encounters not only his first fan, but a mentor who will challenge and change him forever, and Forrester has his first reason in years to emerge from his self–imposed solitude" (p.1). Despite their extreme differences, Jamal and Forrester exchange courage in different ways, they challenge each other to go outside of their box. These men have to challenge one another harshly in order to push the courage out of eachother. They are scared of the consequences, but eventually gain the courage. This matters because them being together rises the level of courage that they have, despite how hard it is. Forrester is scared of the world and Jamal is scared of falling into the stereotypical student athlete. At the state basketball tournament Jamal is told by an administrator of his school that if Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Finding Friendship in the Film Finding Forrester In Finding Forrester a movie that takes place in the Bronx, there are two main characters, William Forrester and Jamal Wallace who find friendship in an unlikely way because of their passion for reading and writing. Though both are very different from each other they are drawn together by similar interests. The characters are different in many ways; Forrester is a male Caucasian in his mid seventies who graduated from Columbia University and lives by himself. Forrester has confined himself to his apartment for ten years. His only foray to the outside world is when he leans out the window to clean off the grime. Forrester pays for all other necessities that are handled by outside...show more content... On the other hand, Jamal is a sixteen–year old African American male who went to a private school on a scholarship and lives with his mother and brother. Unlike Forrester, he enjoys going outside, interacting with his friends from school and going to basketball games. Another difference between the Jamal and Forrester is his confrontational attitude. When harassed by another student from school on the basketball court, he handled the problem in his own way, proving his ability to do as well as the next person, which gained the respect from the coach and the other students. Forrester and Jamal may have a lot of differences but they also have many things in common. Forrester's passion for reading is reflected by the number of books lining his walls and stacked on the floor of his apartment. Jamal's ability to recites passages from many of the books he has read indicates the pleasure he takes in reading. Another similarity is Forrester's enjoyment in writing. He published a book and an article plus he has a file cabinet filled with other books and articles he wrote but never published. Jamal takes pleasure in jotting down information, thoughts and daily events in books that he carries at all times in his book bag. This gift of expressing himself in writing enabled him to obtain a scholarship to a private school. Both characters take pleasure in sports. • 8. Essay about Finding Forrester Finding Forrester Assignment 1. Jamal refused to recite the poem and say he has not read it because; he did not want his friends to make fun of him. 2. Jamal turned to reading and writing after his father abandoned his family because, he knew that learning things to make him smarter will help him become a better person when older, so he would not do something like this which his father did. 3. When Jamal finds his backpack in the street he discovers comment in red ink in his journals. Forrester had read his journals and made editorial notes in them. 4. When Forrester says "constipated thinking" about Jamal's writings he is criticizing his work, saying it is not clear. 5. Jamal takes up the challenge to...show more content... 9. Jamal and Forrester have both a teacher–student relationship and a friend–friend relationship. They have a teacher–student relationship in how Forrester helps Jamal become better at writing by correcting his work and helping it sound better. They have a friend–friend relationship when Forrester in the end admits that he gave Jamal permission to use his writings, so that Jamal would not be accused of plagiarism. 10. I think that both Jamal and Forrester are teachers to each other in the film. Jamal learns that he is a very smart guy and with some guidance from Forrester he can be a very intelligent writer. Forrester learns from Jamal that the past may have been upsetting and feeling full of blame, but you cannot let it affect today and he admires Forrester and respects him, and no one comes from a past that had no sadness. From being around each other they received a sense of respect and admiration at an intellectual level. 11. Forrest warns Jamal about bitterly disappointed teachers, like Robert Crawford, because some people like these teachers only see and believe what they think is right, and since Jamal came from where he did with a background like he has, there will be criticism and disbelief over his work, but Jamal is to stand by what he writes and feel proud over it. 12. • 9. Film Analysis : Finding Forrester William Forrester (Sean Connery), a famous author who turns out being a hermit states, ВЁyou must write your first draft with your heart. You rewrite with your head. The first key to writing is... to write, not to think" (Finding Forrester (2000)). A powerful quote to that accurately depicts the powerful storyline of 2000 drama film, Finding Forrester. Set in modern–day New York City, Jamal Wallace (Rob Brown), a sixteen–year–old child genius is faced with the challenge of choosing academics or playing basketball at his remedial school in the Bronx. Jamal internal conflict is answered by socially awkward, classic novelist, William Forrester, who wants to help him find his voice through writing. He made his basketball friends from the hood believe he was still one of them, but also interact with his teachers and students in an intellectual way, that makes him seem genuine yet brilliant. If I had to critique one character it would be Claire Spence, Jamal's love interest, played by Anna Paquin. The direction and dialogue she was given were vague and not intriguing. The audience was left wanting more and there were many plot holes in their relationship that were not fulfilled by the end of the film. Paquin did what she could with the character and certainly left us wanting to see more which I did appreciate, I am upset with the direction team for not focusing more on her. Equally important, the conflict of Finding Forrester added a deeper meaning and interest to the already beautifully directed characters. The boys from the Bronx are aroused by the man (Forrester) that watches them from his high–rise window. Jamal sneaks into his home but loses his backpack while escaping. Jamal wants to write better so he works with Mr. Forrester daily to impress his teachers. Although, Mr. Forrester is very secretive about his past. Jamal must decide whether he wants a life with his street friends or a rich and lavish one. His friends embarrass him for having a crush on a Caucasian girl, Claire. The last major conflict of Finding Forrester is that Jamal's teachers are questioning if he plagiarized his works because the writing sounds like Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. "You must write your first draft with your heart. You rewrite with your head." Quoted by Sean Connery. In the movie, Finding Forrester, a 16 year old boy named Jamal Wallace and his friends play out on a basketball court while there is a creepy guy always looking out the window they call him "The Window". Jamals friends dare him to trespass into "The Windows" apartment and take something so they know Jamal actually went in the apartment. When Jamal climbed the fire escape and got into the apartment, "The Window" scared Jamal and he left his bookbag. Later on, Jamal gets his bag back and starts to go over to the apartment more often. They get close personally and form a strong friendship. In Finding Forrester, when going through tough times friendships should matter; since, friends will always be there to help and support with every action that is made. When people have friendships it shows who they are because of what could be done for others: therefore, taking time out of the day to care for the person or people. Before Jamal got to know "The Window" he thought bad about him. Eventually he found out his name is actually William Forrester. William took the time out of his day to read Jamal's writing. William took the time to get to know Jamal as a person and not just as someone that broke into his apartment. They started to build a friendship and a personal relationship with each other. • 11. Finding Forrester Character Analysis When I first found out that we had to find similarities between ourselves and a character in Finding Forrester, I thought that it was going to be impossible. However, I realized that I had been thinking way too hard about finding something to write about. Not every life changing decision, experience or opportunity must be huge, although the end result most likely ends up to be. My middle school self made the decision to choose volleyball over the other sports that I had also been playing. Making that decision has opened up many doors for me, although I didn't know what would come of it at the time. In order to be successful people often have to dare to make their dreams become a reality and have someone motivational along the way. I have always...show more content... My parents always have my back when it comes to anything that I am trying to pursue. At one point I considered going to college on the East coast, and although I know that they would have absolutely hated that, they were willing to let me visit schools to see if that was where I wanted my college experience to be. After I decided that going so far away from home would not work for me, they helped me to find a college closer to home where I would receive an excellent education and play volleyball. They helped me through the recruiting process, which causes a lot more stress and takes up more time than I ever imagined. There were weeks when I would receive emails upon emails from coaches and weeks where there would be none. That could be very discouraging at times, but they always said the right things to keep me feeling confident in myself. In Finding Forrester, William constantly pushed Jamal to become a better writer. He would yell at Jamal to pound the keys and write without thinking in a tone that seemed a bit harsh.. So even though it may have seemed like William was tearing Jamal down at times, we know that he just wanted to get the best out of him. I compare my parents' support to William helping Jamal become a more superior writer because our encounters influenced both of us Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Analysis Of The Film Finding Forrester The film Finding Forrester is an excellent example of a literacy narrative. A literary narrative is a piece of text that tells a story about reading and/or writing. A story includes plot, setting, conflict, and resolution. The film Finding Forrester includes all of these elements of a literacy narrative. The author, Mike Rich, made a connection between the two main characters, Jamal and William, through writing. The three main characters that made an impression in the film are Jamal Wallace, William Forrester, and Professor Robert Crawford. Jamal Wallace is the protagonist of the story, he was the brave one of his friends who went up to explore "The Window". Later in the story, the audience finds out that William Forrester is "The Window"; He is the person that lives in the mysterious apartment. William then teaches Jamal how to write and helps him throughout his writing process. Professor Robert Crawford is Jamal's English professor at Mailor. Professor Crawford was very skeptical of Jamal and his writings. The film has many different settings throughout New York; the apartment is in the Bronx but Jamal's private school, Mailor, is in Manhattan. These two settings are important because one shows how Jamal grew up with a rough life in the Bronx and then what he is expected to live up to in Manhattan. Dialogue is the key aspect of stories and films, without it there is no meaning. Toward the end of the story Jamal finds out that William has passed away of cancer and left Jamal a note. Jamal opens the letter from William that reads, "Dear Jamal, Someone I once knew wrote that we walk away from our dreams afraid that we may fail or worse yet, afraid we may succeed. This quote is the most important dialogue in the story; it summarizes the whole film. Throughout the film, William ran away from Jamal, he did not want to read his papers and help him because he did not want to bring out his own writing dreams again. Then, William finally gave in and helped Jamal; William started realizing that there is much more to the world than his little apartment. William taught Jamal how to write, and Jamal showed William the world. If I were to write about a scene, I would pick the scene where Jamal first enters William's Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Posters and other teasers released for the film often comes in the warm colors of brown, yellow and something akin to sepia tone which is very warm and compliments the warmth on the face and character of Sean Connery. The art direction also settled for easily readable typography. Photography captured the softness in the physical characteristics of Connery and Brown and transforms it as visual cue for the audience to lead them towards feeling the unexpected emotional bond that these two men will share in the story. Acting As one of Sean Connery's dramatic movies that earned many positive remarks from critics, Finding Forrester can be judged acting–wise as a movie that reflects the emotional acting style of both Connery and Brown. As usual, Connery brings to the table his father–like demeanor that enhanced his acting, while Brown was effective in playing the student who looks for an idol to look up to, and finding it in Connery's character in the movie. Connery was effective in acting out the recluse, solitary literary genius and was able to communicate to the audience through his acting the changes in his emotional state but not allowing the audience to guess into the future of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Forrester's Use Of Courage In Finding Forrester "Someone I once knew wrote that we walk away from our dreams, afraid that we may fail or worse yet, afraid we may succeed" This is a quote from William Forrester in the movie, Finding Forrester. Jamal knew that the school was just using his basketball skills as a way to win their basketball dreams. In that second, Jamal used the opportunity of it being the championship game, to courageously miss the free throws, and prove a point to his school. Berardinelli (2000) stated "Jamal encourages Forrester to shake off his fear of the outside world. It is a time honored formula that, when handled properly, can be effective and affecting." (p.2). This example explains that Jamal was trying to help Forrester break out of his shell and be more social. Jamal helps him realize the opportunities he has now at his age to be courageous. Another example is when Professor Crawford was harassing a student by making him stand up and asking him humiliating questions. Jamal then gets called on and replies back to Professor Crawford with questions that make Crawford appear unintelligent. Jamal used the opportunity of being in front of the class to finally stand up to Crawford and to help a classmate. This took courage because Professor Crawford controls Jamal's grade and he never really like Jamal. Also, Jamal seeks help from Forrester throughout the majority of the movie, which encourages Jamal to break Forrester's shyness (Levy, 2000, p.3). This example shows that the unknowingness of Forrester's house gave him the opportunity to crack Forrester's shell. This is courageous because Forrester was a complete stranger and they did not know each other. Therefore, individuals use unknown places as an opportunity to be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
