The Livescribe smartpen allows users to write and record audio simultaneously. It has a removable ink cartridge, OLED display, built-in microphone and speaker. The smartpen's utilities for language learners and students include writing notes, recording lectures, practicing pronunciation, storing data, and using an onboard dictionary. It is compatible with multimedia learning principles like the modality principle which states learning is enhanced through words and audio together. The smartpen allows segmented learning and is designed intuitively. Students report it is useful for note-taking but additional applications and storage space are limited.
