In US Constitutional Law, the right of people to make
personal decisions regarding intimate matters.
Under the Common Law (from courts/legal decisions),
the right of people to lead their lives in a manner that is
reasonably secluded from public scrutiny.
In statutory law (from regulations/laws), the right of
people to be free from invasion of privacy such as
unwarranted drug testing and Electronic Surveillance.

We had a rousing conversation about the merits of open access (#OA) during Open Access Week at Trinity College. My presentation focused on how I came into OA and the key resources that make a busy faculty member or graduate student's entrée into sharing their research publicly as part of the open education movement. After an introduction from our digital librarian Amy Harrell, I was joined by my colleagues Jack Doughtery in Urban Education Studies, and Charles Lebel in Language and Culture Studies in brief individual presentations followed by a conversation with our faculty.

"Personal/Political/Feminist Maps: Reflections on Spatial Methods for Action Research" Talk given at Feminist Social Justice Conference, a Workshop on Participatory and Feminist Research Methods March 16, 2015 San Diego State University, San Diego, CA In _The Practice of Everyday Life_, de Certeau writes that "What the map cuts up, the story cuts across." But what if the everyday stories you seek are already cut up by centuries of structural inequality and oppression, such as those of lesbians and queer women? In this talk I investigate what can be gained for the study of women’s lives and spaces by bringing together the isolated but overlapping stories of lesbians and queer women in maps, from the hand-drawn to the most technologically advanced and interactive. Drawing upon qualitative and quantitative work on lesbians' and queer women's spaces and economies in New York City from 1983 to 2008—including multi-generational focus groups and mental maps, archival research and GIS—I work through three different types of mapping methods and platforms within a participatory action research framework. Through a close analysis of mental maps and GIS maps created using QGIS and TileMill/Mapbox, I suggest that while the spatial and verbal can both obfuscate and illuminate understandings of everyday life. It is the queer practice of holding these seeming binaries in tension that reveals the most rich and complicated knowledge.

This talk, "Queering the Map," was given by Jen Jack Gieseking at the Futures Initiative of The Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY) on October 2nd. Jack’s first book is The People, Place, and Space Reader, co-edited with William Mangold, Cindi Katz, Setha Low, and Susan Saegert, and recently out with Routledge. He has held fellowships with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation as German Chancellor Fellow; The Center for Place, Culture, and Politics; The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies; and the Woodrow Wilson Women’s Studies Dissertation Fellows Program. Jack has published in Journal of Urban Affairs, Qualitative Inquiry, Journal of Interactive Technology & Pedagogy, Antipode, and Radical History Review, and has contributed to HASTAC as well. She also writes about his research as a blogger with the Huffington Post Gay Voices.

AI - Artificial Intelligence - Implications for Libraries

Conclusions you reach with data are only valid if they correctly interpret your data set. In many organizations, the responsibility for collecting and aggregating data is distributed, so it can be hard to ensure that everyone who uses a data set understands the limitations of the signals in that pipeline. As an example, many companies make important decisions about what events constitute an “active user,” and these decisions are reflected in the pipeline code. Changes to a pipeline may not be communicated to all downstream users, leading to misinformed conclusions even from correctly executed analyses. In this talk, Richard will share three key questions to help ensure that you are interpreting your data correctly and drawing accurate conclusions.
