Goals of Education for Realists
• Notions of the good life, truth, beauty could be
answered through the study of ideas, using the
dialectical method…for contemporary realists,
the goal of education is to help individuals
understand and apply the principles of science to
help solve the problems plaguing the modern
world
• Teachers should be steeped in the basic
academic disciplines
Aims of Education
• Provide the students with essential knowledge
he will need to survive in the natural world
• To teach truth rather than beauty
• To understand the present practical life
Nature of curriculum
• The realists believe that the most efficient and
effective way to find out about reality is to study
it through organized, separate, and
systematically arranged subject matter
• Subject-mattered centered
• Emphasizes the subject matter of the physical
world, particularly science and mathematics
Role or character of teacher
• Initiator and facilitator
• Practical
• Organizer
• authoritarian
Role or character of learners
• Discover of knowledge through sensation and
abstraction, good at classifying and sorting
objects based on their characteristics
Instruction/Methods of teaching
• . Education should proceed from simple to
complex and from concrete to abstract
• Students to be taught to analyze rather than to
construct
• Vernacular to be the medium of instruction
• . Repetition is necessary for retention
• More emphasis on questioning and
understanding.
