ONE-WAY ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE (ANOVA)
Situation:
Three groups of students in Grade 11 are taking up different strands, these are ABM, HUMSS, and TVL.
To find out that if these three groups has the same level of prior knowledge in Earth and Life Science,
the teacher conducted a diagnostic test using the same type of assessment tool in all groups. Their level
of prior knowledge in Earth and Life Science determines whether all groups should take the same
number of remedial activities. The table shows the scores of the learners who took the diagnostic test in
Earth and Life Science. Test the mean scores of the learners at 0.05 level of significance.

Step 1. Make the problem statement based on the given situation.
Is there a significant difference of the mean scores of the groups of Grade 11 learners who took
the diagnostic test in Earth and Life Science?
or
To determine if there is significant difference on the mean scores of the three groups of Grade
11 learners who took the diagnostic test in Earth and Life Science.
Step 2. State the null hypothesis Ho and the alternative hypothesis Ha
Ho: There is no significant difference in the mean scores of the three groups of Grade 11
Learners who took the diagnostic test in Earth and Life Science.
(µ1 = µ2 = µ3))
Ha: There is a significant difference in the mean scores of the three groups of
Grade 11 Learners who took the diagnostic test in Earth and Life Science.
(µ1 ≠ µ2 ≠µ3))
Step 3. Identify the test statistic to be used and select a Level of Significance
A One-Way Analysis of Variance (F-Test) and 0.05 level of significance will be
used.
Step 4. Compute the Test Statistic
Excel output
SPSS output
Step 5. State the findings using the p-value and decide whether to reject or fail to reject the null
hypothesis (Ho).
Since the p-value (0.398) is greater than the level of significance (0.05),
therefore, we fail to reject Ho.
Step 6. State the conclusion
There is no significant difference in the mean scores of the three groups of Grade
11 Learners who took the diagnostic test in Earth and Life Science, (µ1 = µ2 = µ3))
Step 7. Discuss your interpretations based on the findings and give the implications in
accordance with the problem statement and the given situation.
The p-value of the test scores is 0.398, and since the p-value is greater than the
level of significance at 0.05, the decision to be made is fail to reject the null hypothesis.
