A Single Clearinghouse For Online Learning
ONE PLACE TO LEARN ON THE WEB

The Problem: Different types of free educational media are spread over
the internet.

Our Solution: Bring all the free educational media together on one site,
and promote education start-ups such as The Kahn Academy and Coursera.

Free Athena aggregates open university courses, documentary films, Ted
Talks, podcasts, interviews, and all other free educational media on a single
website. Further, we promote the eLearning start-ups that are changing the
face of education, through our Magazine’s editorial home-page.

IS ANYONE ELSE DOING IT?

Lots of websites offer free educational media. None are putting
it together in one place.

-iTunes University and Academic Earth house open university courses.

-Top Documentary and Documentary Storm stream documentary movies.

-Kahn Academy offers primarily science and math lectures.

-Ted Talks website is full of their convention speeches.

-Coursera and Udemy host real-time academic courses from top professors.

Free Athena organizes, and promotes them all on a single site.
WHAT DO WE NEED?

Free Athena needs funding to code the website, to curate
the videos, manage the editorial section of the site, and market it. We have
branded and wireframed Free Athena The site’s content is free because
the videos are openly hosted by sites such as YouTube.

HOW MUCH ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

$25,000 will allow us to code the website. Our team of three will be able
to manage the site in the short them, until we create a revenue stream
through advertising. $125,000 will market us properly for two years.

WHAT KIND OF RETURN CAN YOU EXPECT?

We are improving on something that is profitable already. We expect to be
profitable soon.

WHAT DOES THE SECTOR LOOK LIKE?

In 2011, education-technology investments grew by 28%. Venture capital-
ists invested $429 million in 82 education-technology deals last year.

There are presently two types of education websites:

1. Aggregators of existing “free”documentaries and “open”
   university courses already hosted online.

2. Start-ups that partner with professors of major universities to offer
   real-time courses online.
Free Athena aggregates both free documentaries and open
university courses on a single site. We also pro-
mote free education start-ups by featuring original articles on
our Magazine home-page. We offer consumers the most comprehensive
free curriculum available on the web. If another website offers something
we cannot, we write about them, and connect the consmer to that site.

WHAT’S THE ONLINE EDUCATION MARKET LIKE?

Aggregators and start-ups have similar numbers of visitors per month,
with aggregators slightly outpacing start-ups .

AGGREGATORS - Unique Visitors Per Month

Top Documentary - 280,000 visitors

Open Culture - 250,000 visitors

Academic Earth - 62,000 visitors

Documentary Heaven - 40,000visitors

START-UPS - Unique Visitors Per Month

Coursera - 125,000 visitors

Udemy - 62,000 visitors

Udacity- 48,000 visitors

EdX - 20,000 visitors
HOW DO THEY MAKE MONEY?
Aggregators make money through banner advertising and
university referrals. Start-ups are on running on investment capital.

HOW WILL FREE ATHENA MAKE MONEY?

SHORT TERM -

Banner Advertising and University Referrals, OR Nothing

In the short-term we have an opportunity to make money the same way
other documentary aggregators do but we’d prefer to keep the site clear of
ads while we build a strong, large community.

MEDIUM TERM -

Permission Based Marketing, Tasteful Ads, Referrals to Start-Ups,

Once we have created a community, we will employ permission based
marketing through our newsletter. We will also solicite customer referrals
from other education start-ups. Further, we will begin to consider tasteful,
relevant advertising on our site.

LONG TERM

Amazon Associates (Product Referral)

All documentary films, and university courses have authors, professors,
hosts, and writers who have books and other products for sale. We
plan to refer customers to books, videos and other products that
that are related to these authors, and to the subject matters in
which the consumer displays an interest.

WHAT DOES THE SITE LOOK LIKE?

We’re glad you asked. There are three main sections

1. The Magazine Home Page (see page 7)

2. The Browse Section (see page 8)

3. The Video View Page (see page 9)

The following three pages of this document display these wireframes.

TAKE AWAY FROM FREE ATHENA

The education revolution has come home to the internet. But to the aver-
age consumer, it is still hard to find curriculum. We believe the first step
in solving this problem is to aggregate the free documentary movies and
open university courses on one easy to use website. There are a handful of
start-ups offering unique content, and we want to promote them.

Free Athena is a central hub for a free learning community online. It’s a
place where everyday people can find out what’s happening in free educa-
tion, and where consumers can find an intellectually stimulating video to
watch in their subject of interest.

The times of our lives are filled with many interesting lovely things. People go to organic
stores. They eat at restaurants. People are full of interesting ideas. They like robots, they
like colors. Grass is green. Clouds are blue. There are all kinds of strokes in the pool.
People love the Beatles. Winding and winding around our heads are the easiest of the
things we all love. There are wild and angry folks. The South isn’t very fun. The North is
the place we all want to be.

  • 1. A Single Clearinghouse For Online Learning
  • 2. ONE PLACE TO LEARN ON THE WEB The Problem: Different types of free educational media are spread over the internet. Our Solution: Bring all the free educational media together on one site, and promote education start-ups such as The Kahn Academy and Coursera. Free Athena aggregates open university courses, documentary films, Ted Talks, podcasts, interviews, and all other free educational media on a single website. Further, we promote the eLearning start-ups that are changing the face of education, through our Magazine’s editorial home-page. IS ANYONE ELSE DOING IT? Lots of websites offer free educational media. None are putting it together in one place.
  • 3. WHAT DO WE NEED? Free Athena needs funding to code the website, to curate the videos, manage the editorial section of the site, and market it. We have branded and wireframed Free Athena The site’s content is free because the videos are openly hosted by sites such as YouTube. HOW MUCH ARE WE LOOKING FOR? $25,000 will allow us to code the website. Our team of three will be able to manage the site in the short them, until we create a revenue stream through advertising. $125,000 will market us properly for two years. WHAT KIND OF RETURN CAN YOU EXPECT? We are improving on something that is profitable already. We expect to be profitable soon. WHAT DOES THE SECTOR LOOK LIKE? In 2011, education-technology investments grew by 28%. Venture capital- ists invested $429 million in 82 education-technology deals last year. There are presently two types of education websites: 1. Aggregators of existing “free”documentaries and “open” university courses already hosted online. 2. Start-ups that partner with professors of major universities to offer real-time courses online.
  • 4. Free Athena aggregates both free documentaries and open university courses on a single site. We also pro- mote free education start-ups by featuring original articles on our Magazine home-page. We offer consumers the most comprehensive free curriculum available on the web. If another website offers something we cannot, we write about them, and connect the consmer to that site. WHAT’S THE ONLINE EDUCATION MARKET LIKE? Aggregators and start-ups have similar numbers of visitors per month, with aggregators slightly outpacing start-ups . AGGREGATORS - Unique Visitors Per Month Top Documentary - 280,000 visitors Open Culture - 250,000 visitors Academic Earth - 62,000 visitors Documentary Heaven - 40,000visitors START-UPS - Unique Visitors Per Month Coursera - 125,000 visitors Udemy - 62,000 visitors Udacity- 48,000 visitors EdX - 20,000 visitors
  • 5. HOW DO THEY MAKE MONEY? Aggregators make money through banner advertising and university referrals. Start-ups are on running on investment capital. HOW WILL FREE ATHENA MAKE MONEY? SHORT TERM - Banner Advertising and University Referrals, OR Nothing In the short-term we have an opportunity to make money the same way other documentary aggregators do but we’d prefer to keep the site clear of ads while we build a strong, large community. MEDIUM TERM - Permission Based Marketing, Tasteful Ads, Referrals to Start-Ups, Once we have created a community, we will employ permission based marketing through our newsletter. We will also solicite customer referrals from other education start-ups. Further, we will begin to consider tasteful, relevant advertising on our site. LONG TERM Amazon Associates (Product Referral) All documentary films, and university courses have authors, professors, hosts, and writers who have books and other products for sale. We
  • 6. plan to refer customers to books, videos and other products that that are related to these authors, and to the subject matters in which the consumer displays an interest. WHAT DOES THE SITE LOOK LIKE? We’re glad you asked. There are three main sections 1. The Magazine Home Page (see page 7) 2. The Browse Section (see page 8) 3. The Video View Page (see page 9) The following three pages of this document display these wireframes. TAKE AWAY FROM FREE ATHENA The education revolution has come home to the internet. But to the aver- age consumer, it is still hard to find curriculum. We believe the first step in solving this problem is to aggregate the free documentary movies and open university courses on one easy to use website. There are a handful of start-ups offering unique content, and we want to promote them. Free Athena is a central hub for a free learning community online. It’s a place where everyday people can find out what’s happening in free educa- tion, and where consumers can find an intellectually stimulating video to watch in their subject of interest. We would like your talents on our team. Please contact Jeremy Steinman for more information about Free Athena. jeremysteinman@yahoo.com
