Little known features in PowerPoint to manipulate and create simple graphic elements for webpages (e.g. SharePoint home pages). Make buttons on your pages instead of filling the page with content. Many people turn to a Photoshop like product when they have what they may need in an Office program.
These slides show some basic techniques in PowerPoint to make icons. Download for some steps in the speaker notes area

Start with a clipart that has SOME potential.Choose a consistent background color(s) to keep visual consistency between sites. (pick your color palette)Decide on the ‘look’. Modern is squared edges. Clean. Simple. Consistent. Look at Windows 8 tiles to get inspiration. Mix light text and simple icons. Multicolored tiles with white or grayed images.Use the editing tools after this slide to modify a ‘crazy’ 1990’s image into a subtle, modern look. (I am NOT a graphic artist or a creative person. I still turn to my creative friends for their design aesthetic and taste levels!)The NEW button is not an editable image so it can only be recolored.Position the images over the edge of the buttons.Copy and Paste as Picture to allow for cropping and additional editsThe small image shows the image cropped and sized correctly for the web page.Final steps – save the small image into Site Assets and add to the home page (Insert > Image) then apply a Link over the top of the Image. Look up information on editing SharePoint wiki pages (2010) or add to a CEWP (2007). This same look can be taken care of by Promoted Links in 2013.
This does not represent GOOD ARTISTIC TASTE, but a concept to run with. I still turn to colleagues who are graphic artists by nature, if not by trade, for guidance and good taste I also borrow ideas from good looking websites. Look through Windows 8 tiles for inspiration.
