In April and May, the Trustworthy Data Working Group (https://www.trustedci.org/trustworthy-data) conducted a survey of the scientific community about data security concerns and practices. 111 participants completed the survey from a wide range of positions and roles within their organizations and projects. The working group published an analysis of the survey results in June (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3906865). Over the past three months, the working group drafted guidance, shaped by the results of the survey, on trustworthy data for science projects and cyberinfrastructure developers (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4056241). This guidance addresses attributes of trustworthiness, barriers to trustworthiness, tools and technologies for achieving trustworthiness, and methods for communicating trustworthiness. In this webinar, Jim will present the working group's survey analysis and draft guidance, discuss relevance to science gateway scenarios, and invite input from the science gateway community on the topic of trustworthy data. The working group will be revising its guidance in November, incorporating input received from this webinar and other community outreach events, to be included in the working group's final report in December.

The CILogon 2.0 project provides an online service for scientific collaborations that combines federated identity management (using Shibboleth and InCommon/eduGAIN) with collaborative organization management (using COmanage). NCSA and Spherical Cow Group have been developing CILogon 2.0 under NSF funding since January 2016, adding support for identity linking (including ORCID iDs), international collaborations, multiple application integration protocols (including OpenID Connect, LDAP, and SAML), and more. To ensure the integrity of their work, these systems require the scientists to log in and verify that they are part of the team working on a particular science problem. Too often, the identity and access verification process is a stumbling block for the scientists. Scientific research projects are forced to invest time and effort into developing and supporting Identity and Access Management (IAM) services, distracting them from the core goals of their research collaboration. CILogon provides an IAM platform that enables scientists to work together to meet their IAM needs more effectively so they can allocate more time and effort to their core mission of scientific research. The CILogon platform enables federated identity management and collaborative organization management. Federated identity management enables researchers to use their home organization identities to access cyberinfrastructure, rather than requiring yet another username and password to log on. Collaborative organization management enables research projects to define user groups for authorization to collaboration platforms (e.g., wikis, mailing lists, and domain applications). CILogon's IAM platform serves the unique needs of research collaborations, namely the need to dynamically form collaboration groups across organizations and countries, sharing access to data, instruments, compute clusters, and other resources to enable scientific discovery. CILogon provides a software-as-a-service platform to ease integration with cyberinfrastructure, while making all software components publicly available under open source licenses to enable re-use. Figure 1 illustrates the components and interfaces of this platform. CILogon has been operational since 2010 and has been used by over 7,000 researchers from more than 170 identity providers to access cyberinfrastructure including Globus, LIGO, Open Science Grid, SeedMe, and XSEDE. The "CILogon 2.0" platform, launched in 2016, adds support for virtual organization (VO) membership management, identity linking, international collaborations, and standard integration protocols, through integration with the Internet2 COmanage collaboration software.

Presented at: https://www.eugridpma.org/meetings/2016-09/ Abstract: Who do we trust to provide identity and access management services for our research collaborations? When do we decide to implement it ourselves versus relying on others? How do we create incentives for establishing trust? How do we bridge the gaps in trust, functionality, and reliability? In this presentation, Jim will review lessons learned from his experiences working with IGTF certificates, eduGAIN SAML assertions, and OpenID Connect claims for access to scientific research applications. What new challenges appear when moving from 1 to 10 to 100 to 1000 identity providers? Why does identity information flow more easily in some federations and not others? How do we determine what levels of assurance we need and find providers who can meet those needs? How do we mitigate the risks? How do we effectively federate services operated by the research community, higher education institutions, NRENs, and commercial providers? Bio: Dr. Jim Basney is a senior research scientist in the cybersecurity group at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is Principal Investigator of the CILogon project and co-PI of the Center for Trustworthy Scientific Cyberinfrastructure and Software Assurance Marketplace projects. Jim also contributes to LIGO, LSST, and XSEDE. He has operated IGTF-accredited certificate authorities since 2007 and was a member of the InCommon federation's technical advisory committee for 6 years. Jim received his PhD in computer sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2001.

The Center for Trustworthy Scientific Cyberinfrastructure (CTSC) has been leading the NSF community for the past three years (2012-15) in understanding and implementing risk-based cybersecurity to maximize trustworthy science in the context of the over seven billion dollars of research infrastructure funded by NSF. As of the beginning of 2016, CTSC has been recognized and funded by NSF as a Cybersecurity Center of Excellence to “provide leadership to the NSF research community in the continuous building and distribution of a body of knowledge on the topic of trustworthy cyberinfrastructure.” This talk covers the principles of cybersecurity and identity management to support scientific research developed by CTSC and its plans as a center of excellence, including developing a threat model and cybersecurity best practices for science, providing situational awareness to the NSF community, engaging with science projects one-on-one to collaboratively address their cybersecurity challenges, and building a community of practitioners and researchers around cybersecurity for science anchored by an annual cybersecurity summit for NSF cyberinfrastructure. CTSC provides training, best practices, and support across a diverse set of cybersecurity topics including cybersecurity program development, incident response, software assurance, and federated identity management in response to the needs of NSF cyberinfrastructure projects. A presentation at the October 2015 Internet2 Technology Exchange. Enabling researchers to provision and manage their own collaborations in a straightforward manner is the goal of the FEDUSHARE project. To provide investigator self-managed collaboration, we undertake the design of a middleware architectural framework that turns current models upside down by modeling collaboration from the user’s perspective rather than from the organizational/administrative perspective. We leverage existing federated campus Identity and Access Management (IAM) infrastructure and expertise to accomplish the desired transparent access. We call this framework “FeduShare”. During our presentation, we will demonstrate an in-production ssh console logon across campuses using Shibboleth ECP and updated GSS-ECP client/server components. We will also describe an open source ECP based mobile authentication solution that occurred as a side effect of our work. This work is funded by NSF Grant No. ACI-1440609 and includes participants from Clemson, U Utah, NCSA/XSEDE, and BBN (GeNi office).
