This document discusses ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) version 3 and its service lifecycle framework. Some key points:
- ITIL v3 focuses on the service lifecycle, including service strategy, design, transition, operation, and continual service improvement.
- Each stage of the lifecycle addresses a part of managing IT services, from strategic planning to operational activities and improvements.
- Other frameworks like COBIT and ISO 20000 can complement ITIL by addressing additional concerns like governance, controls and security.
- Implementing ITIL involves aligning organizational functions and processes to the ITIL service lifecycle in order to improve service quality, cost efficiency and value alignment.

5. A service is a means of delivering value to customers by facilitating outcomes customers want to achieve without the ownership of specific costs and risks. Service Management is a set of specialized organizational capabilities for providing value to customers in the form of services. Service management is concerned with more than just delivering services. Each service, process or infrastructure component has a lifecycle, and service management considers the entire lifecycle from strategy through design and transition to operation and continual improvement.

The role of Service Design within the business change process can be defined as: The design of appropriate and innovative IT services, including their architectures, processes, policies and documentation, to meet current and future agreed business requirements. Service Transition delivers this by receiving the Service Design Package from the Service Design stage and delivering into the Operational stage every necessary element required for ongoing operation and support of that service. If business circumstances, assumptions or requirements have changed since design, then modifications may well be required during the Service Transition stage in order to deliver the required service. 25. What is the International Standard for IT Service Management? A new International Standard for IT Service Management (ISO:20000) was launched in December 2005 to replace all existing National Standards (e.g. – BS:15000 and AS:8018): ITIL is a publicly available collection of books describing service management good practice process guidance, a bit like the highway code . The extent to which a service organisation has adopted this guidance is highly subjective and the authors of ITIL recommend that organisations adapt the guidance to meet their specific business needs. For a number of years, consultancies have promised help with ‘implementing ITIL’ or ‘ITIL compliance’, but this promise has never been achievable.
26. What is the International Standard for IT Service Management? A new International Standard for IT Service Management (ISO:20000) was launched in December 2005 to replace all existing National Standards (e.g. – BS:15000 and AS:8018): The introduction of the British Standard for IT Service Management (BS 15000) in 2001 marked a significant change in the industry because excellence in service management was finally measurable, a bit like the driving test . ITIL good practice is a ‘foundation’ for achieving excellence in service management through ISO/IEC 20000 certification. With the promotion of BS 15000 to ISO/IEC 20000, achieving excellence in service management has now become a matter of global interest.
