The Greater Boston Food Bank is a nonprofit organization that was
unofficially founded in the 1970s when founder Kip Tiernan began
distributing food to those at need out of his station wagon. The
organization was legally incorporated in 1981 and has since increasingly
grown. The Food Bank focuses on its mission of ending hunger in eastern
Massachusetts and last year alone the organization donated nearly 35
million pounds of food to nearly 545,000 people.
The Greater Boston Food Bank relies on food drives, financial donations,
and contributions on behalf of companies in the food industry to meet its
mission. Also, the organization also benefits from the aid of more than
14,000 volunteers who help sort and distribute food. The organization is
housed in a 117,000-square-foot facility in the Newmarket neighborhood of
Boston.
