Project Clearwater/Matrix Gateway aims to connect the open-source Project Clearwater IMS core with the decentralized Matrix communication standard by building a gateway. Project Clearwater is a massively scalable, cloud-based SIP core, while Matrix is an open standard for persistent, decentralized communication that links separate platforms but does not directly support SIP. The presentation discusses the architecture, a WebRTC demo, and SIP flows between the two systems enabled by the gateway.

Talk presented at Codemotion 2015. Although the Request/Response pattern has allowed to build applications that were inconceivable when HTTP was invented, there is an increasing demand of solutions that require to push information to browsers or mobile clients as soon as it is available, using technologies like WebSockets. This has applications in messaging, notifications, games, IoT and collaborative apps, among others. In this talk we will present the solutions available like socket.io, Faye, Pusher, PubNub or Carotene, how to integrate such services with existent or new codebases, its advantages, the challenges we will find and how to succeed bringing realtime communications to the table.

WebRTC has been an exciting technology, and extremely fast moving for the past years. While its adoption and its disruptive power are not challenged anymore, the fast evolution pace, and the fast update cycles of the browsers made it difficult to build complex solutions on top of it which would leverage all that webrtc has to offer. Late 2015, the different standard committees and corresponding working groups that compose webRTC have finally reach a consensus, and from the convergence of all their efforts, stable specifications were born. Through the use of GoToMeeting and other software, we will illustrate first the usual pains that most using webrtc have　experienced, and then show how the webrtc APIs, which had started as a peer-to-peer API, were extended with an object model API to provide more options and more controls to this who need it, while keeping the simplicity of P2P for the others. The similitudes between the new Object Model API, and the ORTC API (implemented in edge) will also be illustrated.

Microservice platforms are finally becoming a reality: Mesos, Kubernetes, and a whole bunch of PaaS-style offerings are available, but the reality is that these platforms still don’t provide everything you need in order to build a fully functional microservice ecosystem. Come to this session to learn about the essential deployment, orchestration, and glue components that often have to be self-assembled. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
