1. QUESTION 6: WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT
TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF
CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?
2. CAMERA
In our photoshoot we learned how to use a DSLR camera (Canon). By
using this type of digital technology it has resulted in my picture
being produced in a better quality and has allowed features to really
stand out. Additionally, the speed of the SLR cameras meant that I
could perfectly capture model’s emotions and poses. When first using
the cameras it was important to learn how to properly zoom in and
out, if we did change the zoom we had to change the focus so that it
was certain the photo would fully be in focus. The use of the zoom on
the lens was beneficial to my magazine as it enabled me to capture in
real detail my models’ emotions and face. This overall helped to
benefit my magazine as it meant all my photos were in focus meaning
that my audience could see in detail my models’ faces, make up and
costumes which would help to attract them to buy my magazine. In
addition to learning to use the camera, I learned also how to use the
tripod and how to move the camera up or down which helped me to
achieve low angle shots and high angle shots. Furthermore, by using
the tripod it meant that I could make photos landscape or portrait,
this benefitted my magazine overall as it meant that I could take a
variety of different photos which would appeal to my audience and it
meant that I could successfully take photos from different angles.
3. STUDIO LIGHTS/BACKDROPS
Photos from the practice genre shoot
Before I did my magazine photo shoot, I was lucky enough
to be able to do a practice one in the studio with the lights
and backdrops. In this practice photo shoot, we practiced
with different genres and had the same amount of time as
we would in our real photo shoot. I decided to pick classical
so that this mock shoot would be beneficial for my
magazine. We learnt how to use different coloured
backdrops and how we could mix two colours into one to
create an effect, we used coloured film to achieve these
background colours. From using the backdrops I soon
realised how significant the colour of the backdrop was as
they connate for different things, for example the pink
backdrop has to illustrate the pop genre. After using the
blue lighting for my practice shoot, I decided that this light
blue did not suit my genre, so I had to change it for the real
thing.
Backdrops
Studio Lighting
In my practice photo shoot I learned that lighting is a very important aspect of photography. The lighting really helps to emphasise and
chooses a focal point for the photo, so it is important to get the lighting right. As you can see from my first practice genre shoot image, my
model Gemma has the violin’s shadow on her face which is distracting and makes the photo look unprofessional however it was helpful to
be able to take photos like this so I knew what I needed to improve on by my actual photo shoot. I really considered where the lighting was
hitting my model and as a result of this I captured some really beautiful and delicate looking photos which helped to perfectly convey my
genre. In addition to this I realised where I wanted the lighting to hit my model and what features of my model I wanted to make stand
out, for example in a lot of my shots I ended up really concentrating on my model’s features such as the lips and eyes, where I placed the
lighting in my final photo shoot really helped me to achieve this. With this practice I knew where to place the studios light and where I
wanted to portable studio light to be placed on my model.
4. FINAL PHOTO SHOOT & THE RESULTS
The practice photoshoot in the end
really helped me to produce such
elegant and delicate looking photos
which were perfect for my magazine.
Since I learned how to adjust the
lighting and change the intensity of
the backdrop this meant I was able to
produce photos which would show off
my genre clearly. Furthermore
because the lighting I used helped me
to create soft looking photos this
meant I could keep a consistent
theme throughout my magazine and
also helped my images link to my
house style colours altogether
helping my magazine overall fit
perfectly together. Where the lighting
hit on some of my images such as my
front cover central image helped to
project the beauty in my magazine
and help give my magazine that
genuine and honest vibe it was
seeking to achieve
My practice photo shoot helped me to create the images I wanted for my magazine as I know knew what I
wanted as my backdrops and what lighting I wanted to use. In my final photo shoot I decided to use a gold
lighting for my model Gemma’s photo as gold is a stereotypical colour for classical music so would help to
illustrate my genre clearly, the gold furthermore helped to make the photo look more dramatic and make
Gemma stand out in her black dress. In addition to this I used a white background for my models Sophie and
Tahrima however manipulated the lighting so there was a pink undertone in the backdrop of the photo, this
was essential as it helped to create a softer and more elegant look I wanted to create in my magazine. The
pale lighting in Sophie and Tahrima’s photos meant that the main focus in the photo was them and the
emotions they were showing. Overall, my skills with using the studio lights developed as I knew exactly
where to place my models and the best place to put the back studio lights and the portable one (this all helped
me to take perfectly focused and clear images) .This all benefitted my magazine as it helped me to create
photos which are appropriate for my genre and made my photos look glamorous however also classical and
formal through the colour choices.
5. PHOTOSHOP
I learnt how to use the lasso
tool which benefitted when
manipulating my photos as I
was able to precisely cut
around my images which
overall helped to make my
images look more
professional. Additionally,
this meant that I could create
my own images (such as my
double page spread image)
which would suit my genre
the erase tool came into
real benefit as this helped
to discard all the access
off my photo resulting in a
clean cut image. This
helped to make my make
look more professional
and make my photos look
neat and tidy. This links
to my genre, as classical
music magazine are
formal so need to be
structured and well
presented
The gradient tool here helped me to
create my light pink gradient on my
contents page. This was useful because
it helped to add a bit of colour onto my
page however not overpower it with
colour. Furthermore, I learnt how to
adjust the size of the gradient meaning
I could just create a subtle pink to
white background. This helped to
benefit my magazine as it helped to
create a sophisticated and simple
looking background colour that would
still however appeal to my audience
The spot heeling tool brush helped to cover any imperfections. This was
essential as I wanted my photos to look ‘effortless’ and perfect as these
are the type of women my target audience wants to see. However, I
learnt that I had to use small strokes and be precise with this tool, if not
the picture could turn blurry which would result in the image look
unprofessional and unrealistic. Since I learnt how to use this tool
probably, it benefitted my magazine as it helped my models look
‘effortless’ however helped to create the artistic vibe that I wanted to
illustrate
By using Photoshop I was
able to edit my images and
also manipulate them as
well meaning that I could
create an artistic effect
throughout all my photos
which helped to illustrate
my classical music genre,
overall successfully.
Furthermore, I learnt how
to create effects on texts
using for example inner
shadow, drop shadow. These
effects helped to create bold
and statement text that
helped to convey the idea
that my magazine was
dramatic, which is how I
wanted to represent
classical music
Photoshop has
helped me to create
structured pages for
my magazine and
has also enabled me
to create effects and
create conventions
found on
stereotypical
magazines. I has
also helped me to a
realistic looking
front cover and
contents page and
given me the ability
to manipulate
photos and text.
This all helped
benefit my
magazine as it
enabled me to
highlight the key
features of my
magazine and allow
me to continue my
colour schemes and
also minimalistic
approach
throughout.
Tools I have used…
The colour picker tool has benefitted my
magazine overall as I was able to pick
colours from my images and copy colours
and place them throughout my magazine,
showing consistently in my magazine
which helped to make it more realistic.
Furthermore, I was able to keep a precise
house style throughout my magazine
because of this making it look more
artistic and elegant
6. INDESIGN
By using Indesign I have been able to create a realistic double page spread.
This has benefitted my magazine as it will now attract my target audience
as I was able to create a realistic and formal double page spread. I have
been able to achieve this through the tools I have learnt to use on Indesign
such as text wrapping and formatting. Indesign has helped me to lay out
my article neatly and orderly which helps to convey formality in my
magazine which is essential for a classical music magazine. Additionally,
this software has enabled me to create columns to place my article in
resulting in my text page looking like a newspaper, which again helps to
increase the formality of my page. I have been able to place an image on
one side of the page (just like stereotypical magazines) and this has
enabled me to achieve my original double page spread plan. Furthermore, I
have learnt how to make the text continuous in the column meaning that
there is no blanks left in the text box which results in my page looking full
and this helps to illustrate my genre clearly as classical magazine music
stereotypically include a lot of text.
Indesign tools are very similar to ones found in Photoshop…
I have furthermore learnt how to use text and this has enabled me
to create a bold title and subtitle. Just like Photoshop I have used
the gradient to add background colour to my double page spread to
make it more attractive to readers, this benefits my magazine also
because the gold colour is stereotypical to the classical genre.
Because of the use of the guidelines in Indesign I was able to fit my
image and text perfectly on the page which further helped to make
my double page spread look realistic and more professional.
The selection tool allowed me to change the
size of my columns and this created more
space for my article and even further helped
it look like a newspaper article layout.
Furthermore, the selection tool helped me to
move around text which meant I could place
text in various places on the page. This
altogether would interest the reader

Dafont has allowed me
to choose from a
variety of fonts and
enabled me to find my
intended fonts for my
magazine. I have been
able to find classical
fonts that have really
matched my genre and
would appeal to my
target audience such as
‘Fine Style’ which bares
similarity to the Vogue
font. Dafont has helped
to benefit my overall
magazine as it has

furthermore helped me to organise my blog
more efficiently
SurveyMonkey
SurveyMonkey has been beneficial to my magazine as it allowed me to discover what my target
audience of wanted to see in a music magazine and also helped me to decide which genre I
wanted to do. SurveyMonkey helped me with initial ideas for my magazine and gave me a strong
collection of data that I could always refer too. Furthermore, t helped me to create a database of
my audience’s likes and dislikes which benefitted when making my magazine as I knew what I
was aiming to achieve.

Pinterest played an important part in the
research and planning element of making my
magazine. Pinterest gave me inspiration for my
chosen genre and really inspired me to create a
new type of classical music magazine. On
Pinterest I was able to find costume, poses and
colour inspiration which overall benefitted my
magazine because I was able to illustrate my
genre clearly through these inspirations
Voicethread
I have learnt through voicethread how to effectively analyse a
piece of work. The tools on voicethread have enabled to analyse
in depth both my preliminary and final task. By being able to
analyse my preliminary task in depth, I was able to see where I
needed to improve and this gave me a clear indication of what
skills needed to be developed and how I needed to have a
clearer plan for my magazine.
Google Calendar
I have learnt time management skills through
using Google Calendar. It has enabled me to plan
my time effectively and this has benefitted my
magazine as I have been able to create deadlines
